Finally I received a new L502x after the problem with the noise made by the laptop case. Still, its quality remains questionable - this one has some scratches (I took a picture of the biggest)

Do you have the same "problems" ? Is this "normal" ?
This laptop should be new (no scratch&dent, no refurbished)

... or maybe I'm just over exaggerating?

Ya if you find cosmetic damage you can either return it for a return/exchange (could take a couple weeks) or demand Dell send a tech and replace the part.

... thanks for the answers, but what about my question - how it was your laptop when you bought it? - pristine new/ some tiny scratches/ some big scratches, etc.

Absolutely NOT. Most likely this is a refurbished laptop.

When Dell refurbishes them, they put a green refurbished sticker on the bottom or some factory worker was really pissed off that day.

But what about a scratch and dent? From what I have seen, there are two types of "outlets": refurbished and scratch and dent.

Just get a brand new replacement, you don't have to send it back before you receive the new one. Also you might not want to take the chance of it being a refurbish when you have the choice to replace it.

Also I received mine in perfect condition.

My current M6600 came with a slight scratch on the bottom chassis, but there is no point to fix it because my technician failed to get my laptop working after replacing an upgraded palmrest with fingerprint scanner...

Otherwise, they usually come in immaculate condition.

some of those pictures are messed up, I would send it back. I've taken my computer apart at least 5 times, 3 times for the display panel and 2 for the cpu/heatsink which is just about a completete teardown. I never took a laptop apart before and have 0 cosmetic damage on it. No broken clips or anything on the inside either.

If that laptop is new, that worker must have been pissed off like someone else said, behind on his quota, new on the job, or you got a used laptop. I would send it back if it were me, or at least show the pictures and demand some money back.

They sent me another one ... with other scratches. They say the laptop is new (no refurbished, no scratch&dent), but I'm not so sure about that. It is true that it has plastic covers on the keyboard, on the inside and outside DELL logos and on the subwoofer BUT NOT on the touch-sensitive buttons (and I found some fingerprints on them). I don't have any sticker - green or any other color to confirm that it is a refurbished or a scratch&dent.

I guess I'll keep the laptop shown in picture with the USB key. It has only one big scratch and the CAPSlock key is a little bit rotated. I requested a compensation for these problems. As I have to keep only one laptop, I proposed to them to send back the other laptop without the battery (so at least I could have two 6 cells batteries).

My XPS 15 arrived with a very small scratch on the screen (FullHD!!!) and a little scratch next to the touch panel.
Fortunally I discovered later than this last one was a nail-scratch on aluminium border only, because I could remove it easily simply passing my thumb on it. The scratch on the screen is hardly ever noticeable, so I'll ignore it.
I contacted Dell assistance and they offered a complete replacement of the PC. But I was worried to receive another PC with hardware issues, so I finally refused their option.
Anyway, the laptop has always been working fine, but I think that Dell, quality, too, is going wrong as the rest of the market products.

my L702x was in pristine condition. I'd expect nothing less for the price we have paid for these laptops.

My l702x came with a couple of barely noticeable scratches on it but they replaced my l701x with that so i'll put up with it. But still dell must of just employed a load of new assemblers or something.

Since you ordered it NEW, it should come in pristine condition. If I were you, I would not be happy with this and request Dell to send me a new replacement machine or get a full refund. Considering the price you paid, this is not acceptable, especially for the premium XPS line.

LOL. Buy an Alienware if you want to talk about prices paid for laptops.

I agree, anything you buy from dell regardless of what brand it is, mini, inspiron or xps it should be new with no damage. But XPS isn't really premium. I think that the Alienware Brand out does all of the XPS's in build quality and even they have problems right out of the box.

Indeed XPS is not premium, but I don't think it should be like that. These problems aren't about the design.

If we speak about the design, I don't like some things:
    - the battery which is moving in its place,
    - the 1mm-1.5mm gap between the keyboard (not backlit) and the outer frame of the laptop (see the right side where the arrows are)
    - the keys ... the CAPSLock is slightly rotated, the CTRL touches a little bit the frame around it when is pressed,
    - the two lights for HDD and battery which are outside even if there is enough space inside,
    - the screen (I didn't buy a FHD) is super glossy and you can number the pixels,
    - the HDD - I can hear it very well
    - the cooler - the fan makes some "turbo noise" (it is not normal, I compared it with the other laptop)

    etc.

XPS is considered a pro-sumer brand. Dell/Alienware reshuffled XPS as when they acquired them in 2006, it was competing with themselves (XPS M1710/M1730). So Dell redesigned XPS around Studio line after Intel's Montevina platform was launched and XPS was changed to multimedia oriented computers. Then Alienware became Dell's all powerful gaming brand (as it's been since they were founded).

Sure XPS isn't premium compared to Alienware, but it isn't an Inspiron.

what u will buy, a m11x or a xps 15?.. both of them are really good, my doubt is about the size (if m11x is too small) and if xps 15 can run better the games than m11x..

    P.S.: both have 8 gb, 500 hdd, 2gb nvidia, both have i7(2.0 xps and 1.6 m11x).. the m11x is R3

I'll be honest with you, I don't see any quality difference between my Inspiron E1705 and the XPS 17's I had shipped to me. In the end I ended up sending all the XPS 17's back because of big disappointments in the XPS but yet I still own and love my Inspiron E1705 to this day. The screen is INCREDIBLE, there has never been any overheating issues with it either.

I feel a pretty big difference. With the new XPS line, there is a sense of cheapness, even though it is a "premium" laptop. It just doesn't feel like a quality product. I'll take an old school Dell circa 2005-2007 over the new XPS minus the Nvidia chips.

See I feel differently. I have a early 2005 Inspiron 1150 14" that was a brick (weighed like it too!) but had cracks appear in the lid near the hinges within months. It never felt all that amazingly built, but it did stand up to 5 years of abuse. My XPS l702x however feels very well built overall. And I've taken both systems almost completely apart (basically just didn't pull the mobos). But as the Inspiron is/was more of a budget line, I can't speak for the 2005 XPS-equivalent.

I know my sister's Inspiron 15 from 2010 is a decent build too.

Back then everything shared the same chassis (Precisions used Latitude chassis, XPS shared Inspiron chassis for the most part).

You can feel the quality of the plastics has gone down. Dell got ripped apart for the E1X05, Inspiron 6400/9400 series because they were too thick and heavy. So after the 1520/1720 they completely redesigned their chassis to be thinner and lighter. The result is using lower quality plastics.

Some of the old school Inspirons had hinge issues, but I always try to baby my laptops, so I never had that happen to my Vostro 1500 (Inspiron 1520 clone)

I actually had a hinge BREAK on the Inspiron 1150 a couple years ago too...the sheet metal just plain fatigued and snapped off. Having a one-hinged lid was tricky, thanks to EBay I got a replacement monitor frame (used of course) (which is what the hinges are integrated into on that system, I had to pull the whole dang screen out of the system...) for only a few bucks.

And I hear you, everyone uses crappy plastics these days. Not just the PC manufacturers, it's everyone using plastic. I remember the good old days where something plastic was as good as steel for strength...and I'm sure there are those far older than me that remember even better stuff :D
