Curious to see what is considered desirable, reasonably prudent or simply best value for money.

I purchased the 3 year "best" protect (with accidental replacement) on my L502X. I travel for work with my notebook and it tends to get beat up pretty bad. I figured it would be a good piece of mind.
-
Got the 2-year everything (LCD damage, spills, etc) as I travel a fair bit with this thing and the TSA can be violent with things, plus I'm clumsy at times. Probably should have gotten the 3-year, but oh well.
-
I got the 4 years everything ( complete care) since I travel alot, not sure if it was worth it but I rather have it.. I usually keep my laptops for 4-5 years lol
-
I just got the default 1 year.
I don't bring my laptop anywhere except when visiting my family. In general extended warranties are money makers. It's essentially insurance, and like all insurance, you (on average) pay more than you are likely to get in return.
If something dies on me, I'll just replace it myself, or bite the bullet and take it to a repair shop. -
Remember the Inspiron 6000? I bought one new 7 years ago and just got rid of it. The total cost of ownership after 7 years was $24 for a new ccfl bulb and an hour of my time. Just sold it in mint condition for 30% of what I paid for it new.
Car or Homeowner's Insurance? I'm double covered. -
I just kept the 2 year warranty my system came with
-
got the three year best.. being a college student, I'll probably be keeping it for the next 3 years and it's been my experience that my dell laptops have had problems in both the 1st year and the 3rd year.
the "best" one has accidental damage which i figured would be a good idea for my remaining college years, considering how the past 2 years have been lol.
plus, from what i've seen, if you get the best warranty, you have a easier time getting a actual replacement (versus a refurb) later on if you have a real problem. -
If paid more for warranty, better add money to buy alinware, that a high end model. inspiron low-end, xps middle.

Alienware, ugly. Also crap for battery life

The included 1 year plan for me... well, forcefully included for an extra $55.
2. Warranties aren't about only covering high end equipment.
3. And finally.... thanks for pointing out the obvious hierarchy. That was so helpful since it had absolutely nothing to do with the question. What warranty did you get with your XPS?
-
Nothing...the odds are in my favour...

I initially got the Complete Care warranty for 4 years back in 2006, upgraded for another 3 years in 2009
. I have received several replacements during that time frame:
XPS M170 (Overheating and no replacement videocards available) -->
XPS M1710 (Same as above) -->
XPS M1730 (I pushed for a replacement for this hunk of junk) -->
Alienware M17x R2 (In my sig)
Total cost for warranties was ~$800 ($350 for initial 4 year warranty, and $450 for extending another 3 years). I think I got my moneys worth though.

They replaced an XPS with an Alienware? :|

What kind of Dell protection/service program did you order with your XPS?
