and how much things you had to do too be fully functional (wireless, keyboard etc)

I never ran Linux on my XPS M1530, but I have ran various Linux distros on my desktop PC including various versions of Ubuntu/Xubuntu/Kubuntu, Fedora, Damn Small Linux, Linspire (crap), and a few others. I would say the hardest thing to get working will be the wireless card.

the usual problem with linux distros are the drivers for wireless cards on laptops, last i checked, its really hard getting them to work, ive tried with debian but without any luck on an hp dv6000, the only thing not working was the wireless, everything else was shipshape.
if you try Ubuntu, maybe it has better support for wireless cards, also you can look up on www.ubuntu-forums.com and check witch cards are supported
What wireless card are you using ? -
I'm using Ubuntu (forget which version, the latest as of late June) and it recognized my wireless card immediately. After entering my key, I was online, no problem.
In fact, I'm pretty sure Ubuntu recognized almost all my hardware. The first thing I'd recommend doing is updating your repositories and then downloading the 'restricted' nVidia drivers, so you're accelerated and you can use the uber-awesome desktop effects. -

okay so you could try and install ubuntu Hardy heron, here is a link to download http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download,
you should try the 64 bit version, its much faster than the 32 bit , but it can have some software compatibility issues, so its up to you. -
im using linux mint on my 1330, its based on ubuntu but looks nicer, been lucky everything works, i think lol,
What linux distro do you use in your xps 1530
