College is coming up and the research for a suitable notebook is already driving me crazy. Anyway, I was wondering with dell discontinuation of the XPS line, what would be the point of buying one?

When they discontinue the XPS line, will they remove services and whatnot?

They won't be discontinuing any of these laptops in the foreseeable future and when they do, they will simply shift focus towards what they just brought out but will still support older models.

They may refresh the XPS line, but they will still support it. Driver downloads will still be on the website as well as manuals, and troubleshooting, if in warranty, it will still be serviced. Just becasue they stop making it, dosnt mean they drop support of it.

Although, if you want an XPS, i recommend waiting for a possible refresh to the 9 series (not defective) grphics cards are included in it. or filling out the Faq for a different computer. ;)

And when would that be shipped?

I plan on ordering a notebook around next year...(January-March) time frame, the soonest is February.

Currently we don't have any idea when a refresh will occur. Likely just after the Holiday season though, probably around the time you are going to be ordering. Your best bet is to wait it out for awhile and see what happens.

Id consider now the holiday season when people are ordering...

Id figure they would have refreshed it already... Im guessing it will be by next year because the GPU's they are offering are becoming old. But you never know.

Nope... been checking numerous notebooks ( specifically Alienware and MacBooks) and the only one who has the 9 series are Alienware and MacBooks (that I have my eyes on ).

I'm talking more of a drastic refresh, larger range of innards, maybe a different look among other things. Ya, I would have expected a refresh by now as well but the fact that they haven't means they won't until after the Holidays are over at the earliest.

HP has the 9 Series. As well as Asus notebooks, Sager, and many other brands. Dell is the only one who is still offers the 8 Series.

To pick one out, please fill out Faq. ;)

Thats the same refresh im talking about. ;)
But the refresh would most likely also include an update for the innards, as well as the looks.

The XPS line of products is the bread and butter of the company and don't believe they would discontinue it. Haven't heard of any news that they will do this.
