Hi, I was wondering when we can expect to see an all-new, top-end gaming laptop from dell. The transition from the M1710 to the M1730 seemed extremely quick, in fact with seemingly minimal hardware improvements.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

In the fall expect one with new 40nm graphics cards and quad core processors on the Calpella platform.

    Source?
All sources I've read say Dell won't be doing high end gamers anymore, and are going to push Alienware for that now.

That makes sense. Dell should have stopped making gaming notebooks and desktops when they bought Alienware.

Sure the 8700M GT's weren't an improvement to begin with but the 8800M GTX's sure were/are.

Would love to know what you think the "improvement's" should have been.

I agree with Hep! about the AW thing, although it's changable time's and they're just as likely to swallow AW now as promote them....who know's,they will upset people either way, there's a lot more dell customer's to upset, the current and future economic climate is not going to be kind to expensive gaming notebook's,so it will be interesting to see what they choose to do.

Remember Dell doesn't sell Alienware in a lot of countries. In those places they've already upgraded the 1730 with dual 9800 cards instead. If you're talking about the US then yes, they're obviously phasing it out. But if they bring out a complete replacement eventually for other countries, I suspect they would bring it out in the US as well.

So could anyone suggest a model that would be a worthy purchase if I already own the M1730 with dual 8700 cards?

I know that I can upgrade my cards to 8800's, but I'm really after "beefy" quad core processors, dual 512+ cards, 8gig+ Ram... etc

I'm basically waiting around until the next gen laptop after the M1730.
