A lot of their current coupons and deals expire tomorrow, so my money is on next week for the XPS 16, though that's baseless speculation at best.

Doubt it. They just released the 1647 with the new Intel processors. I don't think we will see a SXPS 16 for a long time, at the earliest at the end of this year... JMO.

Well, maybe I'm defining 'refresh' differently. The last I looked, the XPS 1647 still used the Radeon 4xxx series - I figured they'd plug in the 5xxx before long.

Oh yeah, that's probably true, but regarding the chassis I bet that won't be for some time.

CeBit is next week but Dell's most recent fiscal quarter wasn't all rosey in some regards -- probably from you guys calling support, getting replacement equipment, and otherwise attempting to execute a mini recall :)

That either means Dell will go for broke and attempt to win back some extra money and social buzz with a great XPS refresh... or they'll scrap the line altogether and anounce that everyone who was using XPS for business performance applications/gaming will now be stuck with Alienware or some new Latitude model...

When was the last XPS form-factor refresh -- did that happen last Sept. with the mobile i7 launch or was it further back? If it was further back than that may still be on the table. Beyond that, sure the 5xxx series would be welcome :)

I wouldn't expect an SXPS 16 refresh before the SXPS 13 refresh/replacement occurs which according to others will occur in the latter half of this year.

I have the exact same question!
If they put a 5000 card in the SXPS 16 i will be really tempted to get one

Same here, if they upgraded the machine to have a "this gen" graphics card I'd get one. They can't keep going on much longer with the last gen card. It's a shame they are doing it really as I'm sure they are losing customers over it.

I wonder what the holdup is, it can't be design issues, the 5xxx series would be cooler and consume less power...all seem like good reasons to put the 4670 to bed.

I expect that it's a simple matter of inventory. They want to clear out the 4xxx cards they've already got and everything they put up on their website has to live there for long enough for them to sell enough of them. Presumably, people are still buying the SXPS line with the 4xxx series, such that, at some magic tipping point, it will make more sense for them to start selling the 5xxx than it will to continue to push the 4xxx.

I agree entirely, though. I'd be ordering one right now if they already had one out, but the competition is pretty slim. I can either pay way too much for a Sony or else go for the HP Envy. The Envy is tempting but I've never bought HP and I don't like that I can't upgrade the warranty on the Envy - the two Dell laptops I've owned both had 3 year warranties and both needed them (just a fact of life - had pleasant enough experiences with Dell Support).

EDIT: Whoops, I'm wrong about the Envy warranty - it can be upgraded but it's quite expensive. Also don't like that you can't go above 4GB on the i5 while keeping the Radeon 5830 - seems a bit bizarre. And it's just very expensive. :)

Dell does not keep inventory. They operate on a "just in time" system where the parts they need are delivered only days or even hours before they are needed for production. So the inventory of 4xxx cards does not have any effect on what they offer as options for their systems.

However, they will need to change at some point soon because the newer 5xxx gpu's are out and they will start being very cost competitive with the 4xxx series as production focus is switched to the new line.

Well i am not sure how available the 5xxx gpu's are but other laptop makers such as MSI have already introduced them. I can only imagine how long it will take for the 5xxx gpu's to appear in the SXPS16 in europe :(

The Envy 15 was refresh within 6 months of initial release and moved to the 5xxxx GPU. I wonder why XPS 16 can't do the same.

This is really quite annoying as I've spec'd up the ideal laptop (and matched with their chassis, speakers, etc) it's perfect, with the exception of the graphics card.

I opened a chat with one of the sales advisors asking if the 4xxx is going to be replaced with the 5xxx any time soon and before I could even add to the question that it's the only thing stopping me from buying one, they shut the chat! Rude.
