I want to install Vista 64bit on my XPS1530. I chatted with Dell and they seemed clueless about where I could get this disc. Do I need to contact MS?

Hey! It is really easy to get the disc. Go to the Dell Community Forums and (after making an account) private message DELL - Chris M. Simply tell him your Service Tag and he will send you a 64bit dvd immediately for free, mine came the next day.

Torrents are risky from tampered files and its legality is actually a grey area since it doesnt have a distribution license.

True, the OS I'm running right now came from a torrented .iso, just used my old license key.

I used the Chat support and got the DVD next day, in fact they sent two DVD's the Windows x64 and another one with the XPS drivers. I was surprised how fast and easy was that.

so are you guys saying your product key on your xps will allow you to install and activate the 64bit version as well? That doesn't make sense because don't they charge you extra for the 64 bit? Then why would they give it to you for nothing.

Yes, that's exactly right, rhody. Microsoft will also do the same if you purchased the retail disc (though they charge for shipping, I think):

You guys should mention that it only works in the United States with Chris!
Iam from Australia and I wrote him an email and he replied that he cant do anything outside the US.
    Just nice to know :)
But anyway he gave me the document number and the the position of the text so I contacted our support here, which is important to get a DVD.

well, I talked to support via chat and he is sending me out the disc today. He did say I had to get the drivers off of the Dell site so I guess I'm not getting a driver cd which is fine.

Thanks for the heads up guys, I never knew they would send me this for free

You are still only licensed to run one instance of Windows. MS is now actively encouraging people to move to 64 bit for the added performance now that hardware vendors are catching up.

I spoke to support a week ago to request the x64 DVD and they gave me a hell of a time, insisting they wouldn't send one out unless I could run msconfig and a few other things from the m1530. They claimed not all m1530's could support x64, it took a half hour of talking to get them to send the disk. My m1530 currently has no OS so getting msconfig info was not going to be easy.

-1 for Dell support, very unhelpful.

Let me clarify.. if your tag id was originally for Vista 32bit will Dell send you the 64bit disc? I know you are entitled to 'one' free set of replacement discs that were included with your XPS in cases it got lost.

    Hi.

Do Dell provide Vista64 drivers and utils for your notebook, if not i cannot see them sending a Vista64 dvd.

    Regards

Is this Vista 64 DVD Dell specific? Or is it an OEM disc that can be used to upgrade any system from Vista 32 to 64?

I'm in Europe and the tech replied that I'm eligible to a 64 bit version of Vista but he can't send it because I'm running Vista Home Premium 32 bit and there's no Vista Home Premium 64 bit version available...
If I want to go to 64 bit I'll have to buy Vista 64 bit Business or Ultimate.

    Does that make any sense?
Has anyone from Europe ever received a 64 bit DVD?

This might be a stupid question but how do you do a PM on the dell community forums. I have a new dell that is coming on Saturday and the are shipping it with the 32 bit OS and I would like the 64 bit copy.

I talked with Dell tech support and they refused to send me a copy. They would only do it if I purchased it as an upgrade which I found ridiculous.

I didn't read through the thread but I can tell you what the agreements are. If you purchased Ultimate from Dell, you are entitled to receive 32 or 64 bit installation discs at any time. If you purchased anything other than ultimate you will have to request 32 or 64 at the time of purchase and you cannot switch back and forth at a later date.

if i have a product key for 32bit vista (dell oem), which was preinstalled on the notebook wen i got it (a year back).. can i use the same key to install Vista 64bit on my notebook? or do i have to buy a new license key?

you can use the same key for install a 64 bit OS, It's what I did.

but remember that you can not change O.S version, I mean, if you have Home Premium you have to stick with it.

I PM'ed Chris M. yesterday (12/15) around 11 AM. He replied to tell me that Dell won't support the software, just the hardware, etc. and confirmed the order.

64-bit disc arrived at my house this morning (12/16) around 10 AM.

    Wow.

Ok I bought my 1530 a little more than a month ago, what is the process to get the 64bit OS, what line do I need to feed the Dell representative to get a copy hassle free? And what are the key benefits to upgrading to a 64bit OS?

Badfish, I just got on Dell chat and told the guy I wanted to take full advantage of my 4 gigs of RAM and that I felt 64 bit was where everything was heading in the future so I wanted to get on board now. He said no problem and shipped my disk out the next day.

    Good luck

I just used the Dell Chat Support and a 64-bit install disk is on its way.

I didn't have to do any convincing, just stated my system came with Vista Home Premium 32-bit and that I would like the 64-bit disk.

There was a 2 minute wait, then he came back stating I am eligible. He gave the "we don't support 64-bit" line and asked for address and phone number.

    That's it.

I am in the uk and have been wondering about this too.

I have just got off the phone with a nice chap on the xps support line. I say nice because he is sending me a 64bit Vista Ultimate DVD.

I told him I have upgraded the memory in my laptop and would like to try 64bit. I gave them my service tag and he said yes sir thats fine. i should have it in 3-5 business days. :)

It appears with Dell it all depends on who you talk to. I talked with 2 Customer Service people and 1 tech support guy. The Customer service people said it wasn't possible and the tech support guys said I could do it but I would have to purchase it as an upgrade ( just going from Home Premium 32bit to Home Premium 64 bit ). Finally I talked with Chris M. and he sent it with no issues.

Dell really should offer it for any machine they let you configure with 4gigs+.
