It is the first port closest to you on the left side of the M1530 that says 1394 right next to it.

Oh, but then why doesn't his Firewire wire fit? It seems much bigger then the one your referring to.

Firewire comes in 4-pin and 6-pin varieties. I think the ports on Dell laptops are the 4-pin kind. You'll need a 6-pin to 4-pin adapter.

For the record, it also comes in the 9-pin variety. To tell the difference:

    little rectangular one: 4-pin
mid-size rectangle with one side rounded: 6-pin
    large rectangle: 9-pin

    i recommend monoprice.com.

The small 4-pin one can't supply power to the device like the larger ones, either. I don't know if that matters for what you're trying to do but just thought I'd mention it.

I tested both my 3rd Generation iPod and my Canon ZR40 and they both worked connected to the 4 pin power adapter on my XPS M1530. My iPod 3rd Gen acctually came with a 6 pin to 4 pin firewire adapter (back in those days iPods used a real interface not crappy USB :p ).

However, I don't think it will charge the iPod like someone mentioned. Still you can still sync songs and use it as a external Firewire HDD (plug and play).

@mcfaddenator: Isn't the 9-pin connector only for FireWire 800 though?

Yeah, FireWire 800 is only on Apple computers. Don't really care anyway!

All you need is a small cheap converter for it. Its not big deal. It can work.

windows-based notebooks tend to have the 4 pin while macs have the 6 pin... only difference between the 2 is that the 2 extra pins supply power.
