My brother in law is configuring an XPS M1330 and he called me to ask which HD he should choose. The choices are:
250GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
160GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) Free Fall Sensor
The 7200RPM HD is the sameas the 5400RPM HD, is the Fail Sensor something important to have?
-
does he need a large storage space or not
-
If he needs the disc space, go for the 250GB drive because the density makes up for the slower seek times.
Out of personal experience I don't think the free fall sensor is that important unless he's doing some sort of field work or is constantly on the move it does provide a little added safety in case of an accident. -
no thats incorrect, i dont understadn y but densitry does nto make up for the slow rpm
-
He is torn between the larger disc space and the possible faster performance of the 7200rpm HD. Usually he goes for the fastest possible but he doesn't know if the 7200 rpm HD effects heat, battery life and noise.

but in a hrd drive the disk startes writing from the outside, i am not convinced it does.

See this comparative chart for notebook hard drives:

You can compare performance and power consumption. -
