After using my XPS M1710 for a couple of weeks now, I decided I wasn't satisfied withe the LCD quality. The problem I was having was this...when viewed directly on from the center, and with a display primarily white, the extreme left and right sides were darker than the center, making it hard to read text without having to become a "bobble head" and moving my head left and right.
It wasn't the lamp in the LCD panel, because when I readjusted my head more to the right or left, the brightness would increase. It was a due to a narrow field of view on this panel. It was so narrow that even when looked at from head-on, the sides were starting to fade out.
I figured for a computer this expensive, I should have THE BEST LCD that Dell makes! So...by way of Dell Chat, I have a replacement screen coming...
My question to you all (owners of XPS M1710) is what brand panel do you have and are you completely happy with the uniformity and brightness?
Thanks all, and wish me luck in not getting another Sharp-branded panel!
-
Your unhappy with sharp? Sharp makes the best lcd tvs so l'd expect them to make good lcds for laptops as well.
-
lol how do i check to see what screen i have?
-
Yah I was wondering how to check it too. I got the 1505 and when I recieved it , the papers I got it with are saying LCD for inspiron 6400/e1505 , not a specific brand.
Also something a bit off topic - on my 1505 the intel sticker doesn't says "duo" but just "centrino" , although it is 1.86 duo (i checked the bios and it says dual core). Did anybody else have such "issue" too ? -
To check which brand panel is inside your laptop, go to device manager, and then to monitors. Select your monitor (may be "plug and Play"), then choose the "details" tab. Under details, look at the HardwareID or DeviceInstanceID. Usually, the first few letters of the manufacturer of the actual LCD panel are there.

Well good luck, been through 3 LCDs on my 1505 and I gave up. I've decided I'll just live with it.
I guess Dell just uses subpar screens across their laptops to save money. -
-
My desktop monitor is a Dell 1704FPT (digital). Thats an LCD, 17'. I've had none of these problems with this that alot of laptop monitors seem to have. I checked the device manager and the hardware ID is DEL4005. I have no idea what brand that is, but its great, no light leakage, of any of that light distortion your talking about. I just hope the screen on my notebook is good when I get it.

Completely different sheff159
Well, on this M1710, and on my old M170, i had LG screens. LG screens are what you want. I dont know how, but i always seem to be lucky with Dell....
My LG screen is perfect, little (barely) light leakage.
I do notice though, it is slightly dimmer at a 45 degree viewing angle. Dead on 90 degree angle, the screen is perfect.
Here is a pic in the dark, with GTA getting ready to start.
Super bright, crisp, clear, no light leakage, etc:

Look in the device manager/monitor -
In any case, my replacement panel is the one you have, the SEC3155, better known as LTN170U1 from Samsung. If you have the same symptoms, I think I might skip the trouble of installing it, and send it back and TRY to request an LG screen.
If anyone has the LG screen, can you look on your Dell order and see what the Dell P/N is for the LG...maybe I can get one that way...
Thanks! -
Did you read my post Lancorp?
The LG screens are LPL0000 -
What I said was the DELL PART NUMBER, not the device ID. If you look on the Dell Packing list that comes with your PC, it usually outlines every component and piece of paper that shipped with your order, and each item has a DELL PART NUMBER (i.e. X1876 or something).
Since you got the LG screen, can you look at your order and determine the Dell P/N for the 17" LCD assy?
Thanks! -
Ah, i see.
Mine is 320-4755
And thats the second thing under my Order Description
17 inch Ultrasharp Truelife Widescreen WUXGA -
Hey lancorp....I have the LG in a 1710 and my part number is HH258. It's not really any better than the 2 LG's I had in an M170 though, so don't expect miracles.
-
So much for part numbers.
-
Actually, partial correction...that information was from the "my systems and peripherals" page at Dell.com. I just looked at my packing slip for the heck of it and it states that it's a UG503. So it's one of the two. I tried looking under "current system info" on the Dell page, but it just has a generic statement about the monitor, nothing with the Dell part number. I don't know where else to look.
You had mentioned something about the XPS line using more and more parts from the Inspiron line...It seems to me that the XPS is an Inspiron with some cosmetic changes and a different GPU (assuming you have the 7900GTX). The only real benefit is the upgraded customer service. -
Actually, the differences between a M1710 and E1705 is quite huge -
I'd like there to be big differences actually, because I paid for the XPS...so help me out here. -
Anyone know what brands come on the 1705? -
Hmm...got my M1710 comming on Monday, hopefully the screen is nice...
And I hope the 7900GS lets me run Oblivion near maxed out (Resolution & AA isn't so important to me) -
My 1705 system lists my LG screen as; DF028 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17, Wide Ultra Extended Graphics Array, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., GLARE WIDE VIEWING ANGLE, LG PHILIPS LCD
My first screen was the lousy Samsung XGA+ but loved the resolution. -
XPS M1710 Differences:
Brighter Display (they dont have the same screens, as my M170 had the same screen this one does, LPL0000, but its brighter due to higher knits? Forgot the name). THe M170's E1705's hav around a 180 screen, the M1710 has a 250 screen.
Of course, the 7900GTX option - If the E1705 was the same, people could add this card without any modding.
Better support - XPS users get there own support person
The box - comes in a better box (a XPS box) and with a CD case, and little travel bag.
Keyboard - Its Silver
Lights - of course the lights, and the touch pad
Nice finish - the black or red is a great addition, and the silver finish makes it look sleek
thats my opinion, and i could probaly write more, thats just what i came up with in 3 minutes
The M1710 and the E1705's have slightly different mobo's as well. -
I want to "live with it" for a few days, but the angle of view seems better than the SHARP. No bad pixels or anything, sharpness and brightness are good, but the lower right and left corners are dark. There is also a bit more "sparkliness"(?) on the Samsung than there was on the SHARP.
So, I am now able to see the whole screen with pretty much uniform brightness, but I have to deal with the "sparkliness" effect a little more, and darker lower corners. Everything else seems about equal.
FYI. -
Following are my review comments on my own SEC3155:
A lot of folks mention light leakage, and I have about an inch along the bottom. It is "slight" leakage and only noticeable during the black screen of bootup, and ever so slightly noticeable with the black WinXP screen saver. Not a prob. My concern was the viewing angle. Moving my head side to side, even slightly, seems to give a shading\shadow\cloud effect to the opposite side I'm looking at. It's not "bad", but it's nothing like the great viewing angles on my Sony HX-73 17" LCD. Unfortunately, NOTHING, yet, compares to the vividness, brightness, and viewing angle of the Sony. Well, after doing some gaming and movie watching, I've decided IT'S A KEEPER! The picture quality is just too darn good overall to gripe about the shading or risk an even worse swap, as some have experienced. My Dell screen is BRIGHT and VIVID (more than my Acer but not as much as my Sony). Adjustments can be made through the Color Correction settings (which I haven't fiddled with much yet). Even a quick fiddle makes me think the "shading" is due to the glass and not the pixels. It is a glossy, highly reflective glass (you can see things behind you on black screens), and definitely not matte. It is what I consider "moderately" sparklely (I'm great on these technical terms, eh?) and not a bother. If you look at the glass at an angle on a black screen, it has a "ripplely" look. As I type this text in Notepad (I run at 1900x1200 and like it) I'm starting to get some vision-ghosting because there is so much white real estate. Anyway, just to repeat myself, it's a keeper, better than my Acer (which was GOOD), not quite as good as my Sony (a high standard, for which I'm "spoilt", as they say in the UK). -
Nice review, Msyvc. "Sparkley" and "rippley", although probably not the technical terms, do accurately describe the effects. I wish, at least, Dell would use a glossy screen that didn't have the "rippley" effect. It can be annoying. (I'm sure it's because they use a cheap gloss plastic in front of the screen to give it the "Truelife" look).
Seriously, I know i'm starting to sound repetative, but people spend the extra $$$ for the XPS expecting the best, and right now, it just isn't (not that I'm not happy enough, because I am...it's just that the screen on a laptop is what you look at! It's probably the most important part of the laptop to the consumer!)
Looking at the new Toshiba Qosmio G35, with a HD DVD player, dual hard drives, etc. is only $3000, and a Sony AR series with Blu-ray burner and XBRITE display only $3500. These are the XPS M1710 prices!
Oh well, maybe when the M1800 comes out, they'll have a better screen by then. -

Hi all i have an inspiron e1705/9400 and have light leakage along the bottom of my display. I actually have an LG display and from what I read it seems that the LGs are most prone to it. Here is my parts info.
DF028 - LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17, Wide Ultra Extended Graphics Array, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., GLARE WIDE VIEWING ANGLE, LG PHILIPS LCD
When viewing text on white, edges of screen are dark and you have to move your head around for the greyish shadow to go away. Viewing movies the bottom 1 inch of the screen is not black.
I will keep everyone posted as to what the dell tech brings this week. If the replacement is a refurb then its going back. I paid too much cash to have a poor display on this laptop -
The M1710 screen is different than the E1705 screens
(Same model number maybe, but more brighter) -
Putting on the same picture, setting brightness to max and turning off all light around and still there is realy no difference to see.
In fact only difference is that i have some very small dark corners in the lower right and left, nothing that one spots right away though.
Only thing i can see that you pay for with a M1710 if the extra light show and bigger GFX card, oh yeah and the right to brag about having the current flag ship of Dell.
Ofcause you also get that extra good support for it, though Dell always seem to have a good support no matter what you have bought from them.
Dont get me wrong, if i could choose again i would still choose the M1710 simply because of the extra speed boost in it, but the screen is not what i think i payed extra for.
Which LCD in your M1710, and are you happy?
