Hey all, was having fun configuring my ideal setup for my XPS 15.

As we all know, the 2GB 435M can only be selected if one goes for the i7 processor (which adds significantly to the cost) If not, one would have to make do with the i5 processor with 1G 420M GPU.

I wish to know if the i7 processor + 435M still feature the optimus technology?

And what is the general battery life on both the i5 and i7 processor on a 6-cell battery.

    Thanks in advance!

I have a Dell XPS 15 with i5 + 420M and I am really happy with the performance. Battery life is 3 hours on average with Optimus and unless you are a heavy gamer with a lot of tasking work on a CPU like video editing, content creation etc., the i5 will do very well.

The i7 processor doesn't have integrated graphics yet so it can't have Optimus with 435M. If you wish to wait, the new Sandy Bridge architecture from Intel expected in mid 2011 or so will have i7 processors with integrated graphics and maybe Optimus will come with i7 processors in the new Sandy line from Dell.

Ah ok, thanks for clarifying that.

If I want 2GB of GPU, I HAVE to select the i7 processors. Otherwise, the i5 processors only leave with 1GB 420M GPU. Hmmm, is 1GB of VRAM enough for day-to-day usage plus moderate gaming (such as Battlefield 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, COD: Black Ops)
**Assuming that I will have 6GB of RAM

I am sorry for asking such long question. Really want to make sure this is the right one. :p

From what I have heard on these Forums, the 435M is generally an overclocked 420M GPU. I am not a heavy gamer, but 1GB of VRAM is enough for me.
