Which driver version of Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS do u use ?

What version is deemed to be a stable one ?

    What's the exact difference between 15x and 16x ?

Today there was a windows update for Nvidia card...What was that for ?

I currently get the best results with the 169.01, they seem to be the most stable and give the best performance of all the drivers that are out there right now. But new ones just keep coming, it's hard to keep up.

Jut read the forums on laptopvideotogo if you want to keep up with the latest versions, people are posting a lot of results there.

    169.01 is for XP?

Can it be used for Vista 32 bit?

Sorry for the nub question, not familiar with how it goes for different OS these days.

169.01 has been my favorite as well so far. Improved gaming, no issues and the system feels faster.....don't ask, I have no scientific proof!

My mistake then, I was checking out the official Nvdia download site and they didn't have 169.01 for Vista 32 bit.

currently 169.04 are the fastest drivers
156.69 (as offered on Vista Update) are the most compatible ones
where powermanagement, Hibernation and sleep modes work properly.

Also the picture quality seems improved with 156.69 (less washed out colors)
and Extended Desktop is working like it should
on all other versions when u unplug the external monitor Vista still restores windows to the same position as they where minimized when using extended desktop (i.e. outside your laptop display). When reconnecting the monitor, the extended desktop settings where lost and needed to be reconfigured. 156.69 restores without any flaws

    So 169.04 being the fastest
    156.69 being the most compatible.

Totally agree with the above. I received 156.69 yesterday and for the first time Extended Desktop works as expected. I carry my laptop between home and work every day, and at each place I always plug it into an external monitor to do my work. The Extended Desktop bugs were a real pain, but now I am very happy. This laptop just gets better and better! It's a 4lb power horse!

No serious problems with 169.04. Sleep mode works fine. Don't really mess around too much with extended desktop, external displays or power management. Huge increase in gaming performance from 163.xx series.

Also with the 8400m, you can not really expect a "perfomance boost" i mean you win 2 frames in Bioshock, or 6 points in 3Dmark 06, who cares?!? you still need to play thoese games at low res and with low or medium settings with eyecandy off.

I rather forget about gaming at all on the xps-m1330, than gain 6 3Dmark points and find that my game is still barely playable (compared with PS3 or 8800GTX maxed out at 2560 * 1600 on my other rig)

So for me the way to go is: Stabillity, Compatibillity and all features working.
If the desktop experience is smooth and all power settings work then i am happy.

BTW H264 and VC1 support works nicely in this release as well, lower CPU utlilization than in the 156.66 or 163.xx series

As long as it could play Age of Empires 3, I'd be happy.

But yeah, I'd rather have what makes it work the best. I like knowing all the features intended for the laptop actually works.

And seeing as how my x1400 can run AoE3 really well, I'm sure the 8400M GS would be just fine.

Not sure if this was mentioned, but 169.04 is OC'able on M1330's 8400M.

    3864 on 3dmark05-on battery power....

    OCed @ 594/742.

Pretty neat if you ask me!

OK I thought I would try out 156.69 drivers last night to see if they were any better... I played Battlefield 2 this morning and it has crashed twice so far, I'm going to try 169.04 see if that works any better

BTW, I had 163.67 before I went to 156.69, and BF2 worked perfectly with 163.67

Hey kozzney, what kind of crash do you have? BoSD or screen and sound shut off themselves?

I am now using 156.69, while it works fine most of the time...

Haven't tried yet since I thought the driver itself was pretty good-a keeper.

I'll let you know when I try it.

EDIT-Tried it, and about same results.

The current drivers I am using, 169.04, work flawlessly with BF2. Can't tell if there is any performance boost from 163.67, but there have been no crashes since I installed them.

With 156.69, BF2 would play perfectly for about 10-15 minutes, and then just simply crash back to my desktop. It was like the program just quit by itself.

Anyways, I don't see any other differences (besides the crash issue) between 156.69, 163.67 and 169.04, so I would recommend 169.04 since they are supposedly the latest and greatest

between 169.01 and 169.04 should give similar performance but i'm quite happy to stay at 169.01 just coz it would break the 4k 3dmark05 score :D

Shonak: try www.laptopvideo2go.com - you need to replace one of the installation files with a moded inf file. all resources are on the website

Right now I'm using 169.04 and when playing games like BF2 and Guitar Hero III, the laptop does get a little hot and the fan revs up to full; I'm not sure of exact temperatures, but I don't think it is damaging. Battery life is excellent on Power Saver in Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I get about 5-5.5 hours on the 9 cell and about 2.5-3.5 on the 6 cell, depending on brightness levels, WiFi, etc.

Hi, has anybody had any issues with their graphics card, for some reason in device manager my graphics card is mentioned under other devices as an unknown device. It was disabled, I enabled it again and tried to update the driver (NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS for my Dell XPS M1330) but -I would almost say as usual- things did not go smooth with windows as I got the message 'windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for the device' access is denied. Has anybody faced this issue before or know the solution than please advise, thanks!
