Which memory should i get to upgrade from factory fitted ram?

I have just purchased a L502, top spec with everything on it, would like some opinions on the memory you guys think i should put into the laptop.

I want to replace dell stock ram from 4gb to 8gb, but which manufacturer and speed shall i get?

Crucial, Corsair, Kingston, or any other i have missed off?

I personally have had no problems with Crucial and i am aware its all much of muchness between them. Thought and opinions welcome.

    Thanks

RAM is RAM is RAM. Personally I use Crucial a bit more but Corsair, GSkill and Kingston are good companies. Only a few actual manufacturers of RAM these days anyway, it's all down to the company and their warranty/RMA process.

    I put 8GB G-Skill in my L501x without problems.
The original memory was Nanya what is in my opinion poor quality than G-Skill.

I think this is pc memory not laptop.I try to find 1666 mhz ram for laptop but cant find it.Read that one company soon will release, but still nothing. But sandy bridge is new platform and its furst to support this memory speed.Soon on the marcet will pop up such ram.I am waiting to see and 8 gb on single stick. This is another new feature of the sandy bridge and the producers
must benefit from it.And sorry for bad english.

1600MHz, not 1666MHz, and the only one I can see on the market right now is the Kingston HyperX. But, you will only get these speeds if Dell allows it. We'll have to see when they arrive. I did see on newegg that Dell allows the use of XMP memory profiles on the M17x R3 w/ the i7 2720QM, so let's hope they do the same for the LX02x laptops with the SB quads. Remember, speed isn't the only factor in deciding which ram to use. Latency (seek time) is just as important, and you will see that cheaper memory, or higher speed memory usually has a higher latency to compensate. You essentially want the highest speed with the lowest latency (and voltage, but that shouldn't apply here).

I don't know much about RAM brands and their reliability/performance and such.
I have a Hynix brand RAM in my laptop from Dell when my RAM went bad, how good are they?

This is So-Dimm modules therefore are only for notebook and mini-ITX systems.
The only questions is there are enough space in XPS15 case.
Some XPS15 owner can say if there is enought space?
In datasheet (PDF) are reported modules dimensions.

poor quality? That is a poor choice of words, ram is ram. Only thing different is timings and speeds.

The materials in the stick can be lower quality and more easily fail. There's quality control so imperfections could cause the RAM to have more errors and effectively slowing it down, etc.

I called Dell Tech Spt, who told me the L502 doesn't support XMP for the RAM. I wonder, though, will the 2720 and 2820 support 1600 MHz RAM, like the Kingston Hyper X? Any thoughts?

The processors support the 1066 RAM but the question is if the Mother Board/BIOS will support it. I think it is up to dell but I may be wrong

I think you're right, and if it was an Alienware system, we could select XMP. I doubt it on an XPS, though.

lol wow dude, there's only a few actual DRAM manufacturers in the world. Samsung, Hynix Semiconductors, Micron, Infineon, Elpida to list the largest. True, lower binned RAM is sold to companies like ADATA, but it works. Bad RAM happens. Billions of DRAM chips are manufacturered every year, defective stuff happens.

Just buy a brand name which has a good warranty/RMA program and you should be in good shape.

PNY is also a decent brand to look at. Getting a 2x4GB at a price point of $69 less is pretty decent. SuperTalent makes nice ones also.

Check newegg daily for the latest deals (sign up for their e-blast). Newegg is pretty good with deals (and amazon will likely follow with a PM).

Right now a 2x4GB of PNY Ram is availi' for $62.99 after $20 MIR.

you can probe to set the timings up and you can see how one fails first.
