There is a deal in Canada on the XPS 1530 now that offers a 320 GB 5400 rpm drive, but no 7200 rpm drives.
I might be okay with the 320 GB 5400 rpm drive if I knew which make it is. Some of them are about as fast as 200 GB 7200 rpm drives.
While I know that Dell uses drives from several manufacturers, the 320 GB 5400 rpm drive is very new, so I think Dell might use only one manufacturer at this point.
So, that's my question to Canadians and Americans who configured their XPS 1530 with a 320 GB 5400 rpm drive, who is the manaufacturer of the drive? (a model number would be nice too).
Thanks in advance.

Why do the models matter?

Toshiba and Western Digital, I'm giving a good guess that it's Toshiba drives they use.

It'll be probably the WD Scorpio drive. I hear a 500gb 5400rpm drive will be released hopefully soon. With more capacity the head doesn't really have to move that far to read data and should be fast enough while saving battery power.

If it is any help, mine came with the Samsung drive.
But I'm in NZ so probably isn't very helpful -
Mine is a Samsung. I've read several others have received this drive also. I don't have the model number handy and my brother has borrowed the laptop for the week. Also in NZ.

Mine appears to. Every so often. I've had 2, both do the same. This is regardless of performance or quiet mode as set in the bios.

Check them both out and see what one works best for you with configs you want. Leave +rep if you use the code. It does work and I know several people who have used it. Thank you. -

It was only after I left it running for a few nights in a row that the noise appeared.
I'd see a few posts about it and thought people were just being overly sensitive but after actually hearing it, I can see why people would be alarmed (which reminds me, time for a backup!).
I set my drive to performance mode (in the Bios) as soon as I got the notebook. I haven't tried changing it since. -

Had mine for 3 mos now, no clicking so far.

My samsung (a HM250JI) was quick and mostly quiet.
At first I loved it.
Then after a few weeks it started making that loud clang sound randomly and despite trying to fix it by software, bios settings etc. (I often thought I had and then it would suddenly be back louder than ever before) I couldn't.
Worse still it started beeping at me, not a typical beep. An octive above that lasted about 1 second. Every other time i shut down PC and the heads parked, I got same sound only much quieter. When it did it during use the noise was so loud I heard it over the loud music that was blaring out of the system at the time.
Then my smart monitoring software detected values suggesting a failure could occur. It never did but didn't really give it chance.
I'm now using it in a USB enclosure as an occasional drive. Seems OK for this kind of use.
Replaced it western digital WD3200BEVT and thats quicker, nearly as quiet when seeking and a lot more reliable. I'd be wary of samsung drives as I had one in a desktop that developed bad sectors. Not convinced by their reliability, especially with so many people reporting a noise that certainly shouldn't happen. -
Last time I checked, Samsung Spinpoints were some of the fastest.
