I just sold me 1530. I really REALLY want to go smaller and lighter. I can get a fully decked m1330 for 1299 from EPP but I really don't want the nvidia chip.
I am debating wether to try and get that chip downgraded to the on board graphics for the same price or wait around for the new m1330 refresh which I can only guess is coming out any day since everyone else released there montevina laptops already.
Any thoughts? Are lots of others waiting too? Any news to share regarding the new refresh?

well, i really dont think that the next xps m1330 ( or any xps for that matter)
will ever come with integrated graphics, mostly because the nvidia chip allready comes soldered to the mainboard and the only way of modifying it is requesting a custom mainboard right from the manufacturer, but i seriously doubt it would even be compatible.
if you are afraid of getting a faulty GPU, then you should wait until the new models come and see here on the forums how they are turning out to be, i do hope the defective nvidia GPUs are no longer around by the time the new models arrive ... -
Whatever the case, they should make it more modular and make the GPU swappable so in the event of a "mass defect" we can at least swap out the GPU for a new one ourselves as opposed to having to replace the whole motherboard. Perhaps the next XPS will have swappable GFX cards? That would be a huge improvement.
-
Huh? They all come with integrated graphics right now. It is an option. Do you think they will stop offering that? I don't see your reasoning.

anyone know whether any of the newer cards are MXM capable?
and it looks like any montevina laptop with the nVidia graphics have the option for hybrid graphics (integrated and dedicated graphics together, can switch between two for battery-efficient or power-efficient) -
Dell uses a proprietary version of MXM already in some of their computers. None will ever be MXM compatible, that way you have no choice but to buy chips from them.
-
Yeah, I meant to say MXM. Thats for subtly pointing out my missing terminology in my prior post paper_wastage.

Uhhh, forte, the Inspirons and M1730's are what I am talking about. It's not standard MXM, it's proprietary and has a pinout unique to Dell. I agree, it might be used in XPS laptops (I doubt it only for size limitations, but it's possible), but that does not change the fact that Dell will never use standard MXM, or at least not for a long time (not until too much consumer pressure builds up like it did on their proprietary PSU's)
-
Yeah, I was referring to the proprietary MXM, not the standard MXM.
It is definitely possible for the M1530, though not too sure on the M1330. Montevina shrinking motherboard sizes by 25% should count for something right? Who knows, maybe Dell won't make the 13.3'' and the 15.4'' XPS identical in design this time. -
I was waiting for it, but I dont think I can any longer. I need a laptop by end of September, and the rumored refresh date is around mid august. I doubt the start up price for the refresh will be cheap, nor will there be any offers during the first couple of weeks of release.
Just how bad is the nVidia chip? If I just watch movies/go online on my m1330 (maybe the occasional wow if I'm bored), will it still be a threat? There's still a day left for me to decide before the offer is gone.
If only there's an official press release regarding the xps refreshes... -

watch movies, online, WoW, all doable on the x3100 -
I've maxed out Assasins Creed on it and have played it for many hours , nothing bad ever happened, no artifacting, random slowdowns, etc. Don't fear.

Have you seen the new Sony SR laptop?

As for Sony's SR, it looks nice, I love the power button, but it is more bulkier/thicker than the M1530 or M1330. The major coolness in design is just that glowing green power button. -

Is the XBRITE-HiColor™ technology still CCFL? I guess I would have to see it in the store to decide. Either way, I think the FW would be my second consideration to the M15XX.

I got the M1330 with integrated graphics only to then learn of a memory leak issue, I already had data corruption. This irritated the heck out of me for the cost (I didn't get it for a big discount, not to mention a new build laptop shouldn't face such an issue if you ask me). It might now ship with BIOS A12 and be OK. I'd personally avoid the GPU given its serious issues, I couldn't bring myself to pay for something I know has a good chance of overheating and killing itself + the motherboard, but that's just me.
I LOVE the M1330 design and kind of overall impression (good performance but still fun touches, and I did grow to *love* the crimson red). But my small issues kept building, new ones would appear, and after a week I returned it. It felt like paying top dollar for a cheap laptop you'd expect at a serious discount in a big store, not a custom ordered direct from Dell for not much off laptop. I feel that Dell needs to really work out the kinks this time around.
I am now looking at the Sony Z and SR, but still checking this board and Dells website constantly hoping for a solid refresh. I kind of hope there will be one that is worthy of being debated heavily between the Sony's. -

my bad, i mean integrated graphics such as the ones provided by intel, and no, none of the xps laptops offer intel graphics, just nvidia.
if you have time, then i would recommend to wait for the new ones to come, there will be some nice new processors and ( as i said earlier) i hope the defective nvidia GPUs are gone by then.
Who else is eagerly awaiting the next m13xx???
