Why does the 13 model cost the same as the 16 model, is it because it is more portable.

Yes, it seems like the smaller the laptops become, the more expensive they become. Remember that the designers have less room in a smaller shell and need to focus heavily on reducing weight and enhancing cooling. More time focusing on this equates to a higher R&D cost, and thus the laptop prices goes up!

the 1340 has nvidia hardware vs ati hardware, nvidia is always more $ plus the smaller size makes it more portable usually portables always cost more since this is considered a ultraportable it carries a prem price tag

13" laptop only makes up about 5% of all laptops sold excludes netbooks,
while 15" has 50% of laptop market. manufacturers have to raise the unit price to make up for the less quatity sold otherwise they would lose money selling 13".

That's very true indeed (however, are you factoring Macbooks?). What surprises me is how small the market share for a 13.3" laptop. To me, this is the ideal size - great for portability, large enough to get a nice amount of screen real estate.
