I have no doubt that the 1080P is a superior screen. However coming from an Asus N61JQ, which had a bright screen that had a terrible blue bias this screen is a joy. Sure the viewing angles are not amazing, and it most likely is not the greatest for photoshop. Nonetheless, it comes with WIDI and HDMI, so if I ever want to do some photos I just plug it in to my Sony 3DTV.
I have only had this a couple of days, and it was a trade in so had no choice on the panel. For me though this is a hugh upgrade on my last laptops screen. Not only that but @ £170, it is a huge outlay just for a better screen. Now of course if I had a choice between my old laptops screen or the 1080P then I would have chosen it. For me though the screen is nowhere near as bad as what people make out, I will note I seem to be lucky enough to get a Samsung screen.

I've seen multiple XPS 15 with the 720p screen and it isn't the worst of the worst, but the fact is it such a low quality screen in such a high priced multimedia laptop is what all the hate is for. Also 1368x768 should be illegal for standard resolutions above 14" laptops.

My point was for a 800+ dollar laptop, having a screen as low quality as a 400 dollar laptop is unnerving.

There are multiple 720p screens used in the XPS 15. Often times, you get the bad one, but occasionally you get a slightly better 720p screen. Of course, like any 720p screen, quality is going to be sub-par and there's no changing the fact that 1366x768 is a limiting resolution.
Why so much hate for the 720P - XPS 15?
