Why would you buy the XPS m1330 ?!

I know this is going to upset some but would like to point out that imho the XPS m1330 is not such a hot deal .

When it was announced I thought it was with its high sepcs ( mostly the LED screen ) that fits in a 4lbs styled 13" form .

However DELLs 1299$ start price doesn't include the desried LED screen nor any high specs for that matter and so :

Once you are lured by DELL and configure it properly you end up with a 2000$+ machine , that s a mac book pro 15" with a LED screen and 8600GT .

Go on and try it yourself ( applestore.com VS dell.com ) , I'm not an APPLE fan boy and the MBP has its shortcoming , it is also about 1.5lbs heavier then the DELL but that seems it ( maybe the XPS is more good looking if it wasn't for the tasteless logos slapped all over it ) .

    Point example

For an twin speced ( 5lbs WXGA LCD ) Inspiron 1420 you would pay DELL only 1200$ ( and with coupons you can get +300$ more worth of hardware/accesories/services ) .

As many here I was hooked first by the LED screen , and ( only 1Lbs ) lighter styling , but does it worth the 800$-1100$ difference ?

    Bottom line

I think the XPS m1330 is <strike>over priced</strike> -- sorry , "premium priced" which for me means the same .

The biggest thing the m1330 has going for it is its size/weight, but you are going to pay a premium for it.

In my case I ended up with a 1420, which in my estimation is a "better bang for the buck".

If you want to be slim/sexy get the m1330. If you want better value for your dollar go for the 1420.

Well besides just the internal hardware you also have to take into account that normally an XPS system is going to have a higher quality casing than the Inspiron line. I know that's one thing that I like about the M1210 I have is that it actually feels more like quality compared to the previous Inspirons I've owned like the E1505 and E1405. I wouldn't pay no $2,000+ for an M1330 though. I would always wait until I could get a good deal. I ordered two with pretty high-end specs and a 3 year warranty for <$1500 shipped here a couple weeks ago.

    Not necessarily true...

The 1420 is solid and has a magnesium case...

    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2150869,00.asp
Unlike the previous Dell E1505 (Core 2 Duo), which was encased in ABS plastic, the 1420's chassis is housed in magnesium alloy. It's a sturdier material that's typically found on business laptops and high-end ultraportables.

Small powerful machines fetch a price premium, for the same price, I would take the 1330 over the 15" mac any day, if the mac were 13", and dell 15, I would take the mac, I dont use my laptop around the house, its an on the go workhorse, so size matters, and serious gaming is the duty of my desktop.

You can never compare price/components of a 13" to a 15" laptop. If all you want are the highest specs at the lowest price, then by all means, get a 15". If you want a more portable device, you are going to sacrifice on some components such as GPU and pay a much higher price.

It sounds like size/weight are not as important to you as price/components, so the M1330 is definitely not your best option.

If weight, looks, build quality and screen are important to you (like it is for me), then the m1330 is worth it.
Bragging rights dont hurt either. I would have gotten a mbp, but for someone with limited budget, it was a little out of my league. Also, im not too fond of the OS, i dont know why the hell they just dont let you install windows xp if you want to... nooooooooOOO!! IT HAS TO BE IN BOOTCAMP! f**k em.

You can't compare prices between a 13 inch notebook and a 15 inch notebook. Of course the smaller form factor will ask for a premium price. If you really want to compare apples to apples then lets look at the 1520 and the macbook pro. You can configure a 1520 similar to the macbook pro and expect to pay around $1500. On top of that the 1520 doesn't have a gimped version of the 8600 GT.

The XPS M1330 design just blows everything else out of the water. For me, build quality is top notch and it's so light. It's worth the price premium, but the LED screen is NOT that great

I've noticed a lot of this lately, especially on the Mac forums, like Mac Rumors.

Mac users are just trying to justify their MBP purchase.

I would buy it over the Sony Vaio SZ because:

Ordering over the phone can get you deals
128mb dedicated 8400 vs 64mb dedicated on the SZ
    2 Head phone jacks
Comes with cds for reinstalling programs
Easy to follow guides for taking apart the laptop

Well, I wouldn't KNOW since my M1330 hasn't shipped yet, but I tend to like the Dell keyboards better as well. Mac keyboards just feel really flimsy to me, and I do a lot of typing, so that is pretty important. My mother's keyboard also had the tendency to have all the letters wear off on her mac. I'm looking forward to seeing if the M1330 has the same feel as the other dell laptops I looked at, but the reviews noted it was very much like the IBM, which I love!
Stupid reason to get a computer? Maybe, but it's all a matter of personal preference.

Well I see I got mostly M1330 buyers somewhat upset ,

"Because you don't want to be a MacIdiot"
"You can't compare prices between a 13 inch notebook and a 15 inch notebook"

Certainly not an Apple fan , I picked the MBP thanks to its LED screen , style and only light weight ( only 1Lbs more for a 15" vs 13" ) , considering the 2 are not so far apart , is DELL planning to be like APPLE ? [/B]

"... Of course the smaller form factor will ask for a premium price"

Lets take DELLs pricing , 14" is considered the base from which in either direction prices go up ( the 1520 is more expensive then the 1420 ) .

Do you really think if it were , an XPS m1530 would be cheaper then the XPS m1330 ? And again where is the limit for the premium for 1Lbs less and a LED screen ?

    We are going for portabilty

In that case the Toshiba Portege R500 is a 12" LED premium notebook sells at about the same price and is less then 2Lbs compared the m1330 4Lbs .

I'm not saying the m1330 is a bad notebook , I'm just saying DELL priced it way higher then its worth , following Apple footsteps which most posters here seem to dislike ( me included ) .

P.S. I too like most of the m1330 looks , if it wasn't for the 2 logos DELL insisted on slapping - in big ugly tasteless style - both side ...

Besides portability, I'm not totally convinced photoshop works as well out of the box on a MBP than with windows.

Why not? Look at the similarities: extremely thin and light relative to their competition, LED backlit screen, premium quality and pricing, excellent styling, high performance GPUs (again relative to competition). They compete with smaller screened notebooks due to their weight. I could go on; they are certainly more similar than you would like to let on.

First person to call me an Apple fanboy gets neg-repped. I do not appreciate it, seeing as I am a total Windows fanboy.

If you could compare good looks in computers with girls, and you fashioned the m1330 into a woman based on that, id tap it.

That sounded pretty geek but.. I think i made my point as to what matter to me the most about a notebook.
