I have Home Premium Vista 64-bit and there's a college student offer for $29.99 for a Windows 7 upgrade and I was wondering if there is driver support for all of the gadgets on this laptop. My biggest concern is the fingerprint reader.

I have the bug in Vista where you can't do upgrades because of database corruption so it would be a full installation from scratch. I assume that I'd have to install Vista and then Windows 7.

I went to Dell's website and didn't see Windows 7 drivers at the site; just Vista drivers.

Okay. Just ordered it. Will be available for download in October. In the meantime, I'll reinstall Vista on the laptop in preparation.

It should be a fairly easy install for you...I did Win 7 Ultimate (64) on my XPS 1530..It found all the needed drivers..except for my Vid, driver..I had to download that.

I had Vista 32 bit....You will really like Win7..it has a nice, unique, easy *flow* to it! :)

You dont have to use Vista drivers.
Win7 will install all drivers if your online when you do the install of Win7.
At the moment I am using new drivers for Win7 for Studio XPS SERIES.

The fingerprint reader comes with an application to load in fingerprints along with drivers for the device. There are other pieces of hardware that are similar where you have an application and a driver. It would be nice if everything just worked but I've been used to not expecting that after using Windows x64 for five years. In many cases, I've had to buy additional hardware that had the driver I needed instead of using the hardware that came with the system.

The XPS M1330 is my travel and backup laptop. My main laptop is a 17 inch MacBook Pro. In general, I prefer Mac OS X as I use Linux at work and OS X has a similar look and feel (I do most of my stuff in a console window).

At any rate, we'll find out in a month. The student deal is very nice - you can get Home Premium or Pro though Pro is a bit more complicated to upgrade according to the website.

I will be happy if Windows 7 just runs faster. That's my main complaint with Vista SP1 (I can't upgrade to SP2). I have Vista on a Quad-Core Nehalem system in the office and that system just smokes. If you throw enough hardware at Vista, performance can be very good. The problem is with laptops with slow hard disks and slow processors.

Like I said, you will really enjoy Win 7..it works out so much better (thus far) on my 1530 then Vista behaved...(and, I really like Vista). ;)

My only driver I needed was the Vid' driver from Dell's site that's it.

I think Win 7 is running a bit faster, if not ...certainly mucho' betta! :p :D

I tried Win7 x32 on my netbook and it found all the necessary drivers and that includes the ACPI driver. I was very impressed. I will wait until it comes out since I didn't want to reinstall all the programs again.

So which drivers should be the Vista, 7, and Studio drivers respectively? Can you install the Studio ones for most things?

Install Win7 with Lan connected this way most drivers will be installed.
Use these from SXPS 1645 Audio drivers & Ricoh Card Reader R5U230_win7 drivers. I used video drivers from Laptopvideo2go BT google for Broadcom bluetooth drivers 6.2.0.9200.

My assumption is that the Windows 7 OS uses the Vista drivers.

I did the upgrade with no problems and everything works. I did not have to install any drivers.
