I was wondering whether windows 2003 works fine on XPS M1330 ? My friend is facing problems finding audio/video drivers for win 2003 ?
Has anybody tried it ? Any links would be really helpful.....Thanks !!

Not exactly. Windows 2003 is a server operating system not intended to be installed on your laptop.

ya i know but there are reasons for him to do so....
MS Sharepoint requires a server OS and thts why he needs win 2003 -
As has already been pointed out, Server OS's are not designed to be run on a laptop. If he needs MS Sharepoint, he should consider installing Server 2003 on a desktop and running it from there, not a laptop.

How's that for an answer? -
It's possible to do this, but the Windows Server OS wasn't exactly designed to run on that machine. I don't have any links because an issue like this will be pretty specific to your machine, and most likely there are no drivers widely available, meaning you will need to roll your own from modifying drivers currently out there to be compatible with the Server OS or other means.
Sorry I can't be more helpful, but you're trying to force the OS onto a system it was not designed for -- you're gonna have a few roadblocks. -

I know its not meant to be but people do install server OS on their notebooks for development purposes..... -

By possible, he means that if you can find or make drivers. It's like trying to install Windows ME, but even harder given 2003 is a Server OS.

Dont know about Video, but XP Audio drivers might work. I havent tried it on a M1330, but once I managed to successfully install XP audio drivers on a Win 2003 server PC (so there is a chance).

can he just install server 03 in a virtual pc and not have to worry about setting it up and running it as a main os? it might be easier i think.

VMware is your friend.
Use your WinXP or Vista as the guest OS, and use VMware Server (free) or VMware Workstation ($199) to create a Windows Server 2003 virtual machine.
Of course, I've had excellent luck with WinXP drivers on W2K3. That is worth a shot.
Those that claim stuff about the laptop "not being designed for" W2K3, that's a pantload. Sure it wasn't designed for it, but neither was Linux; yet it works. Don't be naive. -
Windows XP and Windows 2003 share almost the same driver framework except that the latter is designed to run as a Server OS with many network management options and other active directory services too.....
So IOW Xp drivers will surely work on 2003 too.... But I remember one thing that the Audio Service is by default disabled in 2003 and you would need to enable that alone to get the audio working.....
The install for the audio driver wont directly work... You would need to extract the drivers to a folder and then go to Device Manager... There you would be seeing a PCI Device under System Devices with a Yellow exclamation icon and reinstall the driver for that giving the location of the extracted drivers.... This was what happened with Xp and it should be the same with 2003 as well I guess... -
(but that's just my opinion)
I just don't understand why people find it necessary, to use the hardest, most difficult way to get a task done (ex: installing Server 2003 on a laptop). It's an exercise in futility. The only tangible reason is to say that you did it. Whoopie!! *twirls finger* Congratulations, you installed a Server OS on a Laptop. Unless it can create world peace, what's the point?
As was already suggested, use VMWare and install it as a Virtual machine instead. VMWare was designed to handle numerous OS's and has the appropriate drivers to make each OS run in a VM. -

Anyways thanks guys for ur suggestions.....He tried XP drivers but they didn't work for him.....
Virtualization looks to be an easier option.....
Within a next few months I myself want to try MS Sharepoint which would need me to use a server OS...
VMware is not free right......VirtualPC is free I guess....How does this exactly work ?
Windows 2003 on XPS M1330...possible ?
