Does anyone here have a list of what drivers they are using with Windows 7 64 bit ?
I am about to rebuild my laptop and I am wanting to use the latest versions - including any from any 3rd party vendors like Intel, ATI etc.
Thanks
mark

I second that request!
-
I used the ones from Dell's site except for the graphic card (ati.com). Everything works like a charm

Which ait driver did you use ? -
You should take the one from ATI.com. Even though the one from the Dell's site has a newer date, you should always stick to the one with the highest version number. The Mobility driver from ATI.com is the right one, not the desktop version.
-
thanks - by the way - did you install this:

Dell KG900 Alienware TactX™ Keyboard

File Size: 375 MB - !!
?
375Mb for a keyboard driver ??
What is it ? -
no it's not needed, I think it's a driver for an external keyboard.
-
If I do a clean install of Win7, do I need to load the AHCI driver during the installation process?
-
I'll try and post a list with version numbers, dates and where they came from over the weekend.
I am still seeing one device in device manager thats not installed and i'm not 100% sure what it is. Any ideas how I can find out ? -
maybe it's the memory card reader?

You need the following drivers from Dell's 1640 Windows Vista 64-bit page, if you have the hardware:
Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi MB
Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Minicard
Mandatory drivers not offered on the Windows 7 page:
Creative Labs Integrated Webcam
Dell System Software
Intel Matrix Storage Driver from intel.com if AHCI is enabled
The following vendors have suitable and recommended OEM drivers on their homepage:
Intel (WiFi Link/WiMAX, and motherboard chipset)
Broadcom (NIC and Bluetooth)
ATI (Graphics card)
If and only if there's no driver available, should you stick with the Windows 7 built-in drivers. Windows doesn't always have a fully compatible driver for your hardware but may have generic support for a standard to communicate and function the device until vendor drivers are installed. The benefit of installing vendors software is increased functionality and better performance.
The unknown device that shows up in the device manager I believe is the integrated Bluetooth or Webcam. -
well my bluetooth works ok, as does my webcam and this is what i see in device manager (3 unknown devices):
As far as the ATI driver goes i installed this one from ATI site:
Mobility Radeon - Mobility Radeon HD 3000 Series (version 9.9 dated 9/9/2009) and after I had checked in control panel what driver is being used it said "8.650.0.0" dated "13/08/2009".
Now when I do a windows update it says this (see image)
Just running a windows update now....
EDIT: Hmm, after the windows update and acceping the driver that was "newer" and released 30/09/2009 it now shows I am using a driver version 8.632.1.2000 dated 18/08/2009. -
Hey anyone get to install the bluetooth back ?
-
Doesn't matter if your device "works". If you don't install the driver, features won't work correctly or be available. Windows has included support for generic hardware only, and there are some standards that can give basic compatibility only, not hardware specific or customized support.
-
By the way, you should ignore ATI's "Mobility Radeon" hardware selection and go for the desktop "version." ATI adds support for mobile graphics cards now to all drivers and the only difference is the filename now. Current Catalyst driver version is 9.10.
-
CATALYST 9.10 for Windows 7 is available for all Radeon's here: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=win7/windows-7-64bit
I don't recommend this release for the XPSS 1640, it is available though. People have issues with the driver crashing under Windows 7. -
I don't think this Catalyst 9.10, meant for desktop versions of Radeon, will work on Mobility ones. I just tried myself and the installation package offers you to install everything apart from the driver itself. So I'd suggest to stick to MobilityRadeon driver page which is currently v9.9

i'm using catalyst 9.11 beta 4 (opencl beta driver 2.0) modder w/ mobility modder, so far it's perfect.

x-fi mb does not work with windows 7... and I've called dell and the 16 people I talked to had no clue what it even was. I give up.
-
are you saying we should download these drivers from the vista64 dell driver site and install them anyway? Or should we wait for dell to list drivers on the actually win7 drivers site? Thanks -
I am saying that all versions of Windows based on the 6.x kernel share driver compatibility and yes you should download those drivers from the Vista-64 driver page if it's missing from the 7 page (it will take care of the unknown devices and miscellaneous features that don't work). They are for Windows 7 as well (Vista is 6.0 kernel and 7 is 6.1). For the most part all of Windows 7 features are supported by the Vista drivers.
Regarding my comment on ATI drivers, it turns out I was wrong regarding the desktop driver functioning with mobility cards. The installer will install every except for the display driver, so unless you modify the driver, you're out of luck unless Dell releases something new. -
My Windows 7 is running perfectly fine with all the drivers up-to-date. When you first do a clean install, Windows will basically install every drivers for you except for
-
I basically found like the "master" ATI Mobility Radeon driver on Windows Update. It has version 8.661 (CATALYST 9.10) and it installs without modification with my 3670 and supports every manufacture and ATI card since 2xxx. No more mobility modder.

However. I strongly suggest getting the driver package off the Dell site. THe Catalyst control center is brand new up-to-date V 9.9 and supports your HDMI Audio/Video/ATI Stream/Power Play. -
so my personal impression was that it's better to wait for official releases from ATI/AMD website; especially considering the fact that the mod driver doesn't increase any performance of your laptop.
cheers -
That's antiquated notion. Windows Update drivers are identical to the ones released by the manufactures. In this case this it's the only way you are ever going to see anything above CATALYST 9.9 working with your graphics card without modification. My benchmarks increased with CATALYST 9.10 and crashes I was having decreased. You'll want to install this driver on-top of a normal package in order to get the control panel and whatnot, HDMI driver, etc.
You might want to give the driver a shot before complaining about it. -
btw the regular driver doesn't increase any performance either and has less options.. -
You can go to AMD Games site instead of amd.com.
-
How on earth can I download drivers from Dell's website? I only get a stupid "DellDownloadManager", which says I don't have anything to download....?!?!?!?
-
Hi all. I've installed Windows 7 pro 64 & concur with the things listed that you need to download outside of MS supplied drivers. However I am not getting a clear sense from this thread, ATI,7 forums,Dell nor anywhere else on the web as what the hell I am supposed to be doing with my Radeon 3670. My god I just want to watch films.WMC ip tv, espn streams and have my Zune 4 SW work properly. I do not care about games @ this point. As has been stated in this thread Windows installs a driver during a clean install. Ati/AMD has 9.10 CCC. This in noway ever has worked for me. Does not install the driver or the ccc. 9.9 (which is a beta that even ati says is made for the Win 7 beta not even the RC which is impossible as the beta was over in every way when the bloody suite was released in mid september!!) does work for me BUT when I bring up WMC or Zune sw it states that I do not have the necessary 54mb of ram to operate the product. I then force it through via admin and it kinda works.
Sorry for the vent. It has been a long week already.
Gaming forums and such have mentioned the ATI Tray Tool as a preferable option to the Catalyst. It certainly allows for more finessed tweaking. Anyone found which driver works best but ideally newest with this tool? Or Any assortment of of sw/driver that actually works? Dell is so useless on this matter. Has been since I bought the 1640. Ati ccc suite did not work properly with Vista even. Sigh. As shipped! I had to go to amd to find the right software suite to stop actual bsod. So we are obviously on are own. I can state that the 9.9 mobility suite works but not in a stable fasion. 9.4 worked perfectly with the rc and beta. Crap I have totally hijacked this thread. Sorry. I hope any of my trials help ...lol. I know I sure need some clarity on this ridiculously obfuscated issue.
Good luck out there friends,
J -
Hi. I've been through a lot of hoops re the 3670 card and Windows 7 64bit. I went to Dell's site first after clean install but the dl'd did not work re the Catalyst SW. You indicate that this Did in fact, work for you. No moddifier involved?
It would be most helpfull in my pursuit of getting to 9.10 or 9.9 if you could confirm or deny this?
Later,

However. I strongly suggest getting the driver package off the Dell site. THe Catalyst control center is brand new up-to-date V 9.9 and supports your HDMI Audio/Video/ATI Stream/Power Play.[/QUOTE] -
Ok, since you are having trouble installing CCC I advise you to follow these steps. These steps work perfectly for me and I have a 4670 modded driver with ccc working.
Download and install mobility modder. Follow the steps to disable UAC. Restart your lappy.
Download the latest drivers for the 3670 on www.amd.com
Download Driver Sweeper and install it.
Uninstall your 3670 from the device manager.
After uninstalling your 3670 turn off your wifi and unplug your wlan connection. Do this because if you have internet enabled Windows update will automatically search for the 3670 driver and install them again.
Open Driver Sweeper and check ATI display and select all the ati files and press clean. It should tell you to reboot, press no.
After uninstalling your 3670 and cleaning the files with Driver Sweeper.
Open device manager and click scan for new hardware changes. It should now install VGA display. If not restart your lappy.
Only after VGA display has been installed you can proceed to the next step.
Now open up your 3670 driver you downloaded from amd.com. Let the program extract the files until it reaches the installation. Cancel the installation and open mobility modder.
Now use mobility modder and mod the 3670 drivers, the files should be located in C:/ATI.
After you have modded the drivers open C:/ATI folder and go find the file setup.exe.
After installation you should have a modded 3670 installed with CCC. -
Thanks for such a speedy and thorough reply. Even tho I just noticed it now. A few q's before embarking on this.
1. Is there no trial /shareware of Drive Sweeper? $10.00 is no big but I like to try b4 I buy.
2. Re the modder from Driver heaven, did you install the MSXML 6.0? They do not mention 7 specific so I want to be sure. I understand it is the code the app is written in so...well I may have answered my own q here.
Right 3. Is this how you installed your 3670 ccc or did it just take directly from Dell as you'd indicated in your original thread post. Just curious if so and then obviously why for you & not for so many others?
Props for the detailed response. response.

hello all..... i did a clean install and cleared all partitions...i deleted the OEM partition as well and now i am f**** i cannot get access to the my dell download site since i had never registered before with my service tag intact....
can anyone help me get access to the software? like the fast access which i used to find really handy ?? or maybe enlighten me on how to get access to the site!?
as for the drivers i think i am figured out from dell....i hope so at least :S
one thing that is not working is my Kensington Bluetooth Mouse Presenter -

Thanks for post. Does Driver Sweeper work in the same fashion regarding the executation order of instructions Mr. Spock states for ? I don't want to be caught doing something out of sync. I'm also seeing in the forums(@Guru3d) that one should boot into safe mode to be sure all drivers are properly removed. This alters the aforementioned method so...? Thoughts?

Actually, you don't have to be too hysterical about this. As long as you uninstall it from the Device Manager and install it and nothing happens (which its supposed to be), and you're good. The only times you need a Driver Sweeper/Cleaner is when you're having BSODs or any other critical errors upon updating the drivers. Otherwise, you're good to go.

I just installed 7 prof 64x today and have installed most of the necessary drivers but i'm having a bit of trouble with my screen res.
I like to game, but not at 1920x1080 as it decreases my performance quite a bit. With vista I found it optimal to run the res at 1440x950? something close to that and now I dont have the option to choose that res.
Furthermore, when changing my screen resolution my physical screen changes to the size I pick, leaving black space in the empty area. Basically its like i'm running my desktop/games in window mode when it's full screen...Is there something I'm missing here? -
I've just upgraded my SXPS 1640 from Vista Home Premium 32-bit to Win7 Professional 64-bit. I did a clean install, formatting my HDD in the process. Even after installing/upgrading my drivers based on the recommendations in this thread, i have the following strange problems that I didn't have before I switched to Win7:
The driver for speaker/headphone audio fails to load everytime i start windows <Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)>. This happens even if I rollback from the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC to the default windows driver. However, if I force windows to reinstall the driver, the driver is able to load and my sound works fine... until i reboot again...
While listening to music via my BT headphones (A2DP), the entire bluetooth adapter will just stop working and vanish after a random period of time. The BT indicator light on the machine is still on but the bluetooth icon in my system tray disappears along with the BT drivers from the Device Manager. I need to do a shut down and boot up for the adapter to reappear.
Anyone else faced similar issues or know of any solutions? Any help would be greatly appreciated. -
