I've been playing around with the 64-bit version for a couple of hours now. Seems pretty solid so far, really like some of the UI improvements. Quite drastic startup/shutdown time reduction as well, although not really a big deal for me since I prefer sleep/hibernate modes.
-
Just tested this with my M1530. Looks almost like Vista with a little twist. Overall performance is a litte better. I'm sure it will be better than Vista though.
-
If its dropping temps and yielding better batt life, then sounds good in my book!
Im dl'ing it right now. Will give a review after installing. -
Anyone here able to get AHCI working under windows 7 ?
I tried both 32 and 64 bit AHCI inf from dell ... but doesnt work.
Lastly ... i know WEI is crap but seeing my hdd performance drop from 5.9 (vista) to 2.9 (win 7) is kinda annoying ... -
So I got AHCI to work as my HD still has 5.8 rating. You must install the floppy AHCI drivers from intel's website during ur installation of windows 7 for this to work.
on another note, did anybody get freaking Sigmatel Audio Drivers to work? -
I was wondering if it is possible to install the beta on a seperate partition that i already have, or will I have to do a complete wipe and install? Also, Ihave been reading that Vista Ultimate owners will get a free upgrade to Windows 7, is there any truth to that?

thanks -

If this was a fair world and all adults were responsible for their actions, yes, absolutely would 'All' people who bought a 'home' computer preloaded with Vista, only to find out what a fraud had been perpetrated on them again by MicroSoft, receive a free install of Windows 7 and upgrades.
Yes, Vista has some niceties about it, but far, far too many failings as the "Wonderful new OS Microsoft promised us".
Does anybody remember Bill Gates showing off his new revolutionary OS on TV? Now, looking back are we any smarter about Bill and MS?
Windows 7 may become what Vista should have been.
Look at the hype factor of all windows products since Windows 3.0 started the process of lies, lies and more lies.
The term "Hyperware" was coined from MicroSoft's not quite illegal ways of manipulating us all into hanging on to a Vapor-like hype of what was promised now, but still doesn't exist.
The kids today are only beginning to learn what the old timers of the 70's and 80's found out about the company MicroSoft and it's ways.
So, you will more than likely 'Not' get a free copy of Windows 7, no matter what version of Vista you bought.
Oh well, we do all know that this is Not a fair world Correct?
You get out of it what you make of it. It is your choice.
Good Luck,

You're not a Microsoft fan I take it?
-
so what do I need to do to install the beta on my "D" drive, its just a partition I made when I reformatted my laptop. The download sure is taking forever too!

Alright I tried booting from the DVD on my 1530 but I got an error involving ACPI.sys.... am I missing something here?
Is it perhaps simply a bad DVD and I should burn another copy? -
finally downloaded, im burning the .iso now... and il try it out in a bit
btw, microsoft got big hits from its awful vista OS, so they are trying to set things right, so lets hope windows 7 comes as promised
cheers -
Windows 7 32-bit has been working amazing for me. I'm actually running it as my primary OS right now just because only a few hours after the iso burnt my xp installation crashed hard.
Game performance in Civilization IV has been loads better then on xp x64 and vista, but its the only one I've tested.
Ethernet problem though, can't seem to get it to work at all... -
-
Anyway I'm typing in Windows 7 now. It looks like it didn't recognize the 8600M.... it rates my graphics as 1.0. Downloading nvidia drivers to hopefully fix that.... -
How can I get ACHI enabled after installation? My HDD is showing 3.0 in Win Performance.
-
it asked me for my product key - but when I put the key from my xps it said the key was invalid? ?
-
@KOTULCN:
You need the Windows 7 beta key, not the one from Vista that came with the laptop. -
I have a problem. Aft downloading a couple hundred MB's....a pop up appears. It reads like this..
C:\Users\GMAN\AppData\Local\Temp\u3g5UxeO.ISO.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.
What is happening?
Lastly....the 64x download is the 64 bit correct? Thanks...
Try again later, or contact the server administrator. -
-
It has given me ATA drivers for my HDD.
*Edit* It is Windows 7 64-bit -
I'm running Windows 7 on my XPS M1330 and it's running flawlessly and fast. I upgraded from Vista, I know doing a clean install is the better way to go and I might eventually do that but I just wasn't in the mood to reinstall everything. Anyway even upgrading everything seems to be great, the device manager is clean and the look though a subtle change from Vista is really nice. I actually like it as much as OS X. Man I can't believe I'm saying that about Windows but it's true. I think this time Microsoft finally got it right.
-
is the x64......64 bit?
-
Just out of curiosity, how many of you are using Windows 7 Beta Build 7000 as your primary operating system after using it? Or are you reverting back to Vista and just used Windows 7 to play around with?
-
I'm using it, primarily because I have a 160gb 7200rpm and i don't have enough space to run two partitions at the moment. it's extremely stable so far and I have encountered no problems so I don't regret my decision
-
I'm using it as my primary OS and don't plan on returning to Vista ever again.
-
I can't wait to have Windows 7 replace Vista on my 1530 laptop eventually. I am not likely to install the "beta" version on this laptop to jump ahead of the curve as it is currently a pretty important production laptop for me.
-
Now that some of you guys are running this, I'm curious as to whether anyone has noticed two issues I've been having:
1. Poor wireless range with the Intel 4965 AGN card. It's fine when close to the router, but it drops off dramatically only a couple of rooms away. My M1530 is now set to dual boot with Vista, and if I boot to Vista the range is great (as has always been the case) but then booting into Windows 7 produces really poor performance from the same spot. I've tried the drivers included with Windows 7, the Dell-supplied drivers for Vista, and the latest 12.2.0.0 Vista drivers from Intel. Anyone else have this problem?
2. About every other reboot, I lose mouse/keyboard functionality after the desktop loads. I still have a mouse and keyboard at the login screen, but it goes a way after the desktop itself loads. I have to power down and reboot, and it's usually fine the next time. This is about a 50/50 occurrence. Again, this is confined to Windows 7, and booting into the Vista install never produces this.
Probably both driver-related, but just curious if any other M1530 users have experienced this. I've loaded both X86 and x64, and have the same issues with both.
Other than that the OS seems to work great. -
I don't think people who are using W7 as main OS are doing production work in their notebooks. It just isn't stable/reliable using a beta OS that has potential issues and is going to expire eventually. Also, there won't be any security or reliability patches to beta versions.
I installed it on a separate HD to just play with it for a while. My main OSs are Vista SP1 and OS X, will be replacing Vista with 7 once it goes RTM. -
how do you get Aero to work on W7?
-
I am pulling this out of my butt, but since Microsoft is going public on this, i am pretty sure they will be releasing patches for it. they already did for the MP3 problem, i don't see why they won't plug security holes less they want a backlash on their new OS. I think Windows 7 is VERY important for Microsoft, and I don't see why they will screw over their (eventual) 2.5 million beta testers
Besides, Windows 7 is built off of Vista so I think the base flaws have already been fixed. It's like making Vista more efficient, I don't see how stability will become a huge issue. But that's just me. -
i wanna test w7 out anyone wanna tell me how i can get a key?
-
I'm going to dual-boot with Vista/Win7. Never had any problems with Vista to begin with (with the exception of a few annoyances), but not going to rely on a beta OS as my primary for now.
-
Well, I'm dual booting with Vista on my M1530, and I'm trying to stay in Windows 7 as much as possible, though if an update doesn't address a couple of niggling issues I'll certainly keep Vista available:
Issues I'm having:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=4382305#post4382305
Of course, my notebook is a secondary machine. My main desktop still runs Vista x64. I'v no intention of loading a beta OS on that. -
ok so I was wondering, can you use the finger print reader to log onto websites? I have tried swiping my finger to register a website but nothing happens. Also does W7 allow you to have an icon to use - like a quick launch button to show the desktop? What about the Vista quick launch button to scroll through current windows?
-
so I got a 3.0 rating since I have tried W7 although I dont have all of the drivers from dell. I am hoping once those are installed I get an improved rating, Vista Rating = 5.1 - ??
-
What is the difference between the x86 an x64 downlaods??
-
X64 is 64 bits Operating system
you have 4 gig of RAM whit a great 64 bit processor , just try the X64 version.
PS:Also if you want to know more about 64 bit OS try google. -
Thanks Terrapirata!
-
I am having a hard time allocating my space for a new partition... THIS is what it looks like. What do i do? Thank you...
-
yep, hard disks will only allow a certain number of partitions, try getting rid of one of them.
-
the 2.5GB that is free (on the right). when i goto delete it...it says, "The select partition was not created by windows and may contain data recognized by other operating systems..Are you sure you want to delete?"
Is it safe? lol
I don't know what it is used for... -
-
Is anyone else receiving an error in UPEK when trying to set up the fingerprint scanner?
-
The recovery partition is obviously for recovery. You can safely remove it if you are happy to rely on the install disc if you ever need to re-install Vista.
The 94mb partition contains diagnostic tools.
I normally use Gparted (available on LiveCD, or comes with many Linux LiveCDs) to repartition, as the Vista partition editor will be very limited in terms of who much it will change/resize/delete things.
Of course, don't mess with partitions unless you have backups of all your important files.
Also, make sure you know how to repair the mbr, as using something like Gparted to move things around can require it to be done (very simple). -
