I just recently did a clean install on my xps1640 and put windows 7 ultimate 64x on.. I was told by someone that you don't have to install a driver.. I found that to be false as I had to download my touchpad, idt speaker, graphics card, chipset, video, etc.. Not sure if I got the right ones as I got most off dell's website.. Anyways I'm going to start all over and do a clean install again and was hoping someone might be kind enough as to post up a direct links to the drivers that are abs. necessary for the machine to run properly..I have a
xps1640
4670 ati
2.8 (t9600)
5300 networking card
500 7200rpm hd
6bg ram
1080p screen
If someone has already been in this predicament and had some links they'd share I'd really appreciate that.. As I just do not really have a ton of time trying to install drivers and seeing what ones work best and stuff.. Thanks a lot..

For touchpad, i used the one here.

For ati graphic driver, i used the one here. (You will need modtool to install the driver)

For networking card.

The rest are pretty much on default -
Even if it installs it all by default, I wouldn't trust microsoft drivers. Most of the time, they'll tell you: "You need to download this drive from this site!" and then go and do it. You can then realize it is the driver your need or not.
But... you got to be careful if it auto-installs your drivers because sometimes it works with generic ones. -
So there is no driver needed for the chipset or HD or anything like that?
-
You can get latest Intel chipset driver from Intel. I used this http://files.laptopvideo2go.com/chipset/intel_chipset_9.1.1.1023.exe
When you install, add the -overall parameter.
And HD is not necessary, default is good -
alright, no systems ultility driver needed? as dell says it needss to be installed first for " things to work right"
-
Hmm, you could install that first. I installed Intel Matrix Storage Manager as well. It's recommended even though RAID is not configured http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/cs-021510.htm
