I'm in the market for a new laptop; either the Studio 15 or the Studio XPS16. I'm still chuggin along on my Dell Inspiron 600m from 2003! Anyway, it came with a copy of Windows XP, so I could do a clean OS install anytime I wanted. Does Dell still do this? I'm waiting for Win7 to come out on Oct 22, and I basically want to have a clean install of the retail OS on my new computer. What's the best way to make this happen?

I believe it will come with a Windows 7 Disc. I am also waiting til Oct 22 to order an XPS 16. Its best to get it Pre-Installed. All the people who get the 'free upgrade' would have to do a clean install from their vista disc then 'upgrade' to 7. However I would wait a day or 2 after the 22nd to order.

Buy the full retail version of Win7. Or just wait until Win7 comes out with the laptop and go on from there. Dell install disc comes customized with their logo on it.

Because I want it pre-installed. I will never buy a Vista PC ever again. We're just too close to October now so everyone should wait till the 22nd.

Oh, for sure, I'm skipping Vista all together, but why wait a couple days after the 22nd to order?

To make sure that Windows 7 is for sure loaded on the computer. I don't know if Dell will have all their computers pre-loaded with 7 prior to Oct 22 ya know.

You don't have to install Vista, and then a W7 update. Just download the RTM (if you can), do a clean install of Windows 7 now, and later simply enter the serial number you receive from Dell.

Lexus, I believe he's talking about the W7 Free Upgrade or any OS upgrade for that matter. I could be wrong, but I think the upgrade just rewrites your Vista OS code to make it W7. Since I want to do a clean install of the retail W7, I think my only two choices are to a.) buy the retail version of W7 or b.) hope my new laptop comes with the W7 cd. Hoping for the latter.

The reason I ask the question is because the guy at Best Buy (even though I'm ordering direct from Dell) told me I couldn't do a clean install of W7 without buying the retail OS. Not that I believe him, just trying to get the facts.

You can do a clean install with the update disc. It just requires that you already have an OS in place.
