    Performance for Windows Aero...

Can people tell me what they are averaging for this score? I have a 4.4 and I feel that is low- but I may be totally overvaluing laptop video cards; idk. I also installed the latest video drivers, and BIOS, btw.

4.4? its pretty poor. Then the problem might be due to nvidia optimus not switching to discrete GPU. I'm pretty sure these scores are with Intel HD graphics. Switch the optimus to high performance graphics, and then you'll see an improvement (base score will goto 5.9 from 4.4)

i mean, the gpu score will be around 6.5, and the base score will be your HDD (that is 5.9 if you've 7200RPM HDD)

    What part got the 4.4?

Here's what my XPS 14 got, with a core i7 and upgraded to 8gb of ram

    CPU: 7.1
    RAM: 7.4
    Both video: 6.6
HDD: 5.8 (soon to be 7 something once I get my SSD in there)

gpu is 4.4 because the optimus is not switching to dedicated gpu when required.... set the nvidia optimus profile from power-saving gpu to high performance gpu

although i have no experience with the optimus; since the xps 14 i would be getting would be an i7, so no optimus

when you click on the windows experience index, then click "view and print detailed performance and system information" there check your graphics adapter must be nvidia 420M, and not intel HD graphics. This will make it sure if your computer is using the dedicated gpu at all or not. Revert back for any clarifications.

Yea, don't worry about the Aero score. The gaming one is the one that matters. The NVidia card will be used for anything graphically intensive. Just go with the next lowest score of 5.9. I have the 17, but you can just use my scores to see about what you would get with some upgrades of RAM (might be a little lower with an i3 or i5 since the RAM will only run at 1066 MHz) or an SSD.

    i7 Q740 1.73 GHz - 7.1
    8GB 1333MHz RAM - 7.4
NVidia GeForce GT 445M - 6.9 for both
    80GB Intel X25 SSD + 500GB 7200 RPM HDD - 7.7
(The two 500GB HDDs got 5.9)

Ahhhh... interesting! My "Gaming Graphics" score is 6.5

Still, is there any way to run the test to make the "Desktop performance for Windows Aero" recognize the nvidia and not the Intel(R) HD Graphics?

By using the regular integrated video card and just changing the Windows' theme from Window 7 to Window 7 Basic, I was able to bring the score up to 4.5, from 4.4

I'm not sure if that's one of the factors, but it's worth a try.

I have i7 so I don't get to have fun with Optimus :( But from what I read, there is some settings section where you can force an app to use a certain graphics card, but I don't know if Aero is a choice.

You guys with optimus, in device manager under display adapters do you have the integrated and the nvidia listed, if so, is it possible to disable the integrated forcing just the nvidia card to be active for performance, and vise versa for battery life?

stating the obvious, but make sure you are not running on battery -- discrete graphics only kicks in on default configurations when you have an ac adapter plugged in.

man, the WEI benchmark only runs at ac. It will not run in battery only a/c.

To fix it, you'll have to re-run the WEI. Only then you'll be able to see a performance difference and the change of the printout from intel to nvidia.

yes. The wei is a completely unreliable benchmark. If your games run fine and you're satisfied with performance, why worry about those crappy numbers?

if you want to boost your performance, disable the free fall data protection.
