Hey guys,
Has anyone here experienced issues with the Windows Update program on a Dell notebook? I'm experiencing weird issues with the updates and I'm running on Vista Home Premium.
First, the updates have only been able to automaticall install one update , whereas another Asus notebook I have has installed over 20-30 updates already.
Windows Service Pack 1 is still staying on the "Choose the updates you want to install" list, and has not autmocatically installed even if I have my settings set to "Install updates automatically" every day at 3am.
Should I manually install Windows SP1, then other minor bug fixes and the KB updates would install automatically afterwards?
Also, is Service Pack 1 working fine for anyone with the XPS series, or Dell notebooks in general? I've read a few forum posts regarding people having serious driver issues and losing their speakers due to soundcard issues as well after installing SP1?
http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/31970220/sp1-doesnt-install.aspx
If I install Windows Service Pack 1, will it mess up my currently-working drivers and speakers? Or is it wiser not to install it at all?
And also, can anyone help me with the automatic updates thing? My updates (or at least the only one, Windows SP1), isn't installing at the recommended time.
Thanks...

Have you tried just installing Service Pack 3? After thats installed there should be only a small ammount of updates to do after that. I do not see any reason why any service packs would affect your drivers.
P.S. If you havn't done so allready install Microsoft update then after installed check for updates using the custom method. This way you will see any new drivers available through Microsoft for your hardware.
If things still dont work properly try running WUFix available from here (make sure Java is upto date first) http://wiki.castlecops.com/Windows_Update_Fix -

As for other updates, I don't know why its not updating, but there was also some minor issue for some people with the update for the windows updates itself.. probably its not yet done for you.. it was one of those stealth updates from M$, if I remember well.. but even this you could find a standalone install....
*Just a thought... Finally, even if you have the settings to automatically install the updates at 3, is the system on at 3? Try changing the time and see if it works... but in any case, even if you miss the update schedule, when you start the system it should tell you about available updates.. its done this for me some times* -
DUH DUH DUH!!!! LOL! Sorry!
Yeah I would install Service Pack1 manually and seperately from the others. Again I can not see it causing any problems with your drivers. I have installed Vista SP1 on quite a few brand new Dell's including XPS's.
Good luck -
Haha...yeah. Thanks. Was wondering when SP3 came out for Vista...hehe
But another thing...is there a problem with my Windows Update program? Because the pre-set recommended seting for installation time was 3am, but I've had Vista SP1 on hold for the past few days and it hasn't installed.
I then changed the time to 9pm the other day. And nothing still happened at 9pm. Is there a problem with my settings?
Or after manually installing SP1, will the other KB updates automatically install at the time I set?
Just to note, that my other Asus notebook installs all updates automatically, whether 3am or not. It just notifies me to restart when needed. -
I think that you will be getting the problems because SP1 needs installed seperately. I do believe that all other updates would then install automatically.
Has SP1 been successfully installed on your Asus laptop? -
Thanks anyways for all your advice...
I installed SP1 and other newer updates. Now everything is working quite fine for the moment. Although I'll check whether that automatic updates at 3am is already working.
