"So if you buy the Ultimate edition, you get 32b installed but the disc for 64b comes with it? I'm confused."
I am confused as well, i just bought a dell that isn't here yet and comes with ultimate, what do i need to do to use 64 bit?

Thanks to this thread -- another successful upgrade to Vista 64. I did have a few issues. When obtaining the AHCI Intel driver “iata78_enu.exe” and clicking on it to execute, it does not give you the files needed, you need to run cmd.exe and type “iata78_enu.exe –a”. It will try to install, and will place the files needed in Program Files (x86)/Intel/Intel Matrix Storage Manager. Place these files on a USB drive for the install.
I had an OEM (non DELL) disk of Vista 64 Ultimate and had on my M1530 Vista Home Premium. I used the Key for my DELL Vista Premium Home and it installed Vista 64 Home Premium. After installing DELL media on a partition, I went to install Vista 64 on the main data drive partition and had to format the partition.
After service pack 1, I had to install the Web Cam and sound drivers twice to get them to work.
I installed the DELL M1330 Vista 64 drivers for Sprint WWAN and WUSB (wireless USB) without issue. The M1530 runs nice and fast with Vista 64, and hope DELL make it an option when buying.

How is the hard drive performance compared to Vista 32 bit? Under Vista 64 HD Tune 2.55 on a 200 Gb 7200 RPM drive got
This is much better than a 320 Gb drive in Vista 32 bit got
I understand the difference in spin speed, but some post that they should not be that different. -
So do I understand correctly that the new 64bit-compatible drivers are supposed to be installed after the 64-bit OS is installed?
Probably a dumb question, but I really don't want to screw up my laptop when I get it. XD -
All drivers are installed after the operating system with the exception of the AHCI Intel driver “iata78_enu.exe” which is installed durring the install.
Some say the AHCI is driver makes little difference ~15% for some operations and is not needed.

Hello,
I have a 1530 on the way (delayed ship date, arriving end of the month). I have used Vista x64 on many machines at work and home without any problems, so I hope to install it on the laptop. (I develop 64-bit apps for a living so it's quite useful to me.)
One question though, before I begin: will the BluRay drive be fully functional under Vista x64? I plan to use the laptop for watching BluRay movies when attached to my TV, as well as for burning home movies from my HD camcorder. So I need to know if video playback and burning will be affected.
Has anyone with the BluRay burner tried Vista x64? Is it fully working?
Thanks! -
For everyone struggling with finding 64 bit media, this thread here will help: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=240320. It has the links for files that come directly from Microsoft which will legally give you the media for any version of Vista, including 64 bit versions. The catch is you have to supply the licence. However, any Dell 32 bit licence should work with it's 64 bit Vista versions. Please look at the link for details but it was a lifesaver for me. The link in the first thread to Microsoft for ordering the media is not valid outside of the US and downloading the files was the only way for me to ensure that I got files that were clean, etc... If the o/p wishes, maybe the link could be added to the first post.

An update-
I received my XPS 1530 and promptly upgraded to Vista Ultimate 64. Thanks to this guide (and the equivalent guide for the 1330) the upgrade was completely painless!
Everything works, including the BluRay player / burner, UWB, MediaDirect, Thumbprint scanner, card slot, remote control... everything that I was concerned about compatibility for, turned out to "just work"!
Thanks again for those who contributed to this, especially xpsworm, trebuin, and all those from whom they learned their info
BTW the steps in this guide did not include the AHCI driver installation. I followed those steps from the m1330 guide and they worked fine. -

Why would 1530 users be able to upgrade to 64 bit and not have to install the ahci drivers until after Vista installs instead of 1330 where the drivers have to be installed during the Vista install? TIA!

yeah great guide, installed Vista 64-Bit last week

hmmm trying to install Vista 64 on 1530...i already have XP running on it and have gigs of data which I dont wanna lose...So basically what I am asking is that The Dell Media Direct 3.5 step is not required...right ? Thats basically to wipe your HD clean ...right ?
Hoping for a quick reply
Akshay -
Yes, it's not a require, but i think you should install it to use the playing DVD without starting Windows function and to enjoy Cyberlink Power DVD built-in it -

Thanks for the reply. Weird that the 1530 would have it built in but not the 1330. Are you saying that you personally have installed 64 bit on your 1530 without loading any ahci drivers at any time and that your system is running fine with no problems such as bsod or anything else? I shall have to check to make sure my 1330's bios are the latest and then install 64 bit without any ahci drivers and see what happpens. Interesting

I just ordered my new XPS1530 today, it will be here in 3 weeks.
I got the Samsung 64GB SSD SATA-II drive (after reading about it here).
Do I need any controller drivers?
Any steps to add to this list?
Do I need to care at all, just follow this list?
Do I need to stay away from 64-bit until whenever?
Any input would be great, it is my first SSD drive of any kind.
Thanks! -
My laptop is coming soon and i was wondering where i could check my bios version or if i still had to update it (im assuming they would whip with the most up to date version)

You can see your BIOS version at boot up..Dell just released a new BIOS version last July 30, your system might have a new one its revision A09. -

Help Needed Guys..
After reading the threads to install Vista Ultimate 64 bit, i convinsed myself to install it. I got the OEM Dell Vista Ultimate 64x DVD, but it gives always gives me a error while installation on "install.wim" file.
Currently i am having a Win XP Professional 32 bit..
After reading the threads i noticed that something to do with RAID/AHSI drivers or may be it requires to be slipstream... not sure.
I have already updated my BIOS to A09 version.
My Laptop is XPS 1530, T7700, 4GBRAM, 320GB HDD
Any suggestion or ideas???? -
My 1530 shipped with 32bit but after calling Dell I was shipped the x64 disc. According to Dell rep my first attempt at reinstalling was considered "dirty" in the sense that files where overwritten and therefore not a "clean" install. Dell rep suggeted I reinstall, but this time delete all drives. I did. After updating drivers and software, I'm to where I want to be with one obvious issue:
I can't restart from the windows menu (haven't tried to restart after software update pop-up window). I get the perpetual spinning blue disc and the "logging off" screen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is deleting all drives another way of doing a reinstall or should I have formatted my drive. I didn't bother with Media Direct as I was told by Dell rep that it wasn't compatible with x64.
Thanks all. -
how do i stop my desktop reseting its resolution from 1680x to 1440x when i reboot?
