This is nothing more than a rumor hitting the wires today.
But as I read it, I could not help wondering about the implications.

If interested, please voice your opinion.

AMD up for sale? Dell interested?

    By Adrian Kingsley-Hughes | February 15, 2011, 8:41am PST
    Summary

Rumors are circulating that AMD is up for sale, and that Dell might be interested in purchasing the chip giant.

Could Dell be interested in AMD? At around $6 billion, it would be one heck of a purchase and certainly give the company leverage against Intel, and give the OEM not only access to CPUs, but also GPUs, which means pressure on NVIDIA too.

It would sure liven things up. But for now I’m putting this one firmly in the ‘rumor’ pile.

While interesting, I highly doubt it. What would Dell want with AMD? Although their GPUs are great, their CPUs are inferior to Intel (and greatly inferior in the mobile realm). Dell purchasing AMD wouldn't increase consumer demand for the products of either company, unless Dell wants to start specializing in the low-budget segment, which they don't. I could see Dell being interested in the former ATI, but not in AMD as a whole.

However, with an Intel CPU and Nvidia GPU, why would Dell buying AMD influence my purchase decision for a XPS system? Unless they wanted to downgrade to an AMD CPU for the next generation, in which case I'll pass.

Dell reports earnings tonight. Maybe we'll hear more about this rumor?
    Such as....
Maybe its Dell's intent to expand the working relationship and to work more closely with AMD in design of CPUs?
(It was reported on CNBC that Dell works closely with Intel in design of their chips.)

As long as I could still get the XPS with the Intel CPU's I wouldn't care.

Dont worry nothing of this sort might ever happen
    cause this would make
Dell carry the load of those poor AMD processors
and it will lag in the competition

    rather buy intel ;)

Dell buying AMD wouldn't make me want to buy a XPS or other Dell.

Here's how I feel about current laptops:
    Intel CPU/ NVIDIA GPU: awesome
    Intel CPU/ AMD GPU: great
AMD CPU/ AMD CPU: no thanks

Despite this being a far fetched rumor, google "Dell AMD rumor" and see all the stories today.

I wonder (in this situation) if this is true?

I'll keep buying Intel for now in the mobile arena. If Dell stops selling Intel mobile chips well then there will be others to buy from.

Never happen, this is some story probably floated by some banking trader who's likely playing with the AMD share price.

The downsides to this deal are huge for both Dell and AMD.
