I'm a noob when it comes to screens but I want to put screen quality near the top of this shopping list.

Does a sacrifice in physical screen real estate worth it for a better quality screen? This notebook has heavy emphasis on watching shows and movies via webpages, DVDs, etc. so I'm considering a notebook with strong audio and video even if a 17" is heavy.

Please give me thoughts on 15" RGLED vs 17" FHD. Both are same resolutions if I am reading correctly

The XPS 15's B+RGLED 1920x1080 display has 95% color gamut, whereas the XPS 17's 1920x1080 matte display has 72%. The XPS 15's FHD display is a lot better.

well, the 17" is matte on the NON 3D, so that is a big + for many.

    lot better with regards to????

I won't be holding this up to Pantone standards...i will watch some movies, internet....etc, etc..

No sarcasm here but sometimes I'm not sure if someone is just spewing out gamut #s or how that will apply to me because I have no experience with it. I don't know what a 20-35% gamut difference will be like in my real-world usage!!

it just means the colors are a lot more vivid and defined. The XPS 17's FHD display is still better than a lot of other displays though.

great advice everyone, thanks so much. I think I'll go for the bigger screen.

I can see that the 3D XPS does not have Optimus graphics and I really don't want a oh so hot notebook esp when this will not be for gaming. I can get a pretty loaded XPS 17 non3D for ~$1100

why do so many people like Matte finishes? I havent had a matte finish since i had an old IBM thinkpad - doesn't it take away from the deeper colors and richness of the screen?

It does, yeah. Less contrast. Also you can't see yourself in it, though...

The only thing when deciding whether to get matte or glossy is to easily figure out where you'll use the laptop. In the home or at work? Glossy should be okay. Spend lots of time with your laptop in the park or other sunny outside areas? Go with matte.

Glossy will definitely look better and matte block glare better. I'm sure if you walk into a store, you'll be attracted to the glossy displays but a lot of indoor users here prefer matte displays from experience.

I just hope the matte non-3D FHD display rocks with a usable resolution

Both are WLED and equally good.

B+RGLED is NOT equal to WLED.
It is, in fact, quite the opposite.
