my fans are slightly on. But if the ambient temps are 24 C (air conditioner) then the fan stops completely.

I also have an XPS 1645 and the fan often runs when idle. Unfortunately, I am pretty sure this is normal. If the room temperature is high it will greatly effect whether or not the fan is on. If the room temperature is hot (80F) the fan seems to stay on. If the room is cold (68F) and the laptop is idle, my fan seems to come on rarely.

This may sound crazy, but try updating your audio driver (IDT listed as 4/5/10) from the Dell Driver page if you haven't already. It cut back on my audio's CPU usage even when not playing sounds (was always about 1% CPU usage no matter what, now it's about 0% when not playing sounds/music). The laptop's fan _seems_ to be running quieter now, since the CPU isn't working as hard.

not sure about the IDT audio because the default drivers make less rattling/crackling than the new ones. So it all depends. i haven't noticed any difference in CPU usage (Facial access uses about 8% all the time, drives me nuts)

and you call 80F/26C hot??? Your laptop must be very hot indeed, for my ambient temp of 33-35 C, the fans don't even spin.

For laptop heat and fans spinning when idle the processor is the biggest factor. You have listed the XPS 1647, which should generate much less heat than the XPS 1645 due to the Dual Core processor.

And yes I call 80F hot for an indoor temperature, since in the winter I keep the heat on about 68F/20C and find that to be the most comfortable temperature. I know temperature preference is largely based on geographic location.

well had a tech out today, they replaced motherboard, heat sink and fan, now my fan is always on full blast 4500?rpm, as soon as it boots till you shut it down. Pass the dell diagnostics test, fan is on full, test starts runs through different rpms, turns on/off, test finishes fan goes back to full speed. Pretty loud, guess i will have to call dell again tommorow :(

did you enable PowerPlay? The GPU should clock down when idle or when not running intensive apps to very low clocks. As i said, the fans don't even spin, and the slight periodic "crick-crick" of the HDD is the only sound i hear in the dead of the night.
