Sorry if this has been asked before I tried doing a search here, and on google but couldnt find a definitive answer.

I am looking at ordering a XPS 15 with a
    Intel Core i5-2410M processor

I am curious if I could upgrade at a later point to a
    Intel Core i7 2630QM 2.0GHz

From what I understand they are both Sandy Bridge, and use the same socket.

I've done cpu swaps on laptops before so I'm not nervous about that, but just would like to know if someone has done this specific swap

Yes, any Sandy Bridge processor should work.

Quick tip: don't get an XPS 15 with the 1366x768 / 720p screen. It's gotten many complaints about quality and the low resolution won't let you fit much on it since everything will be huge. Find one with the B+RGLED 1920x1080 screen, because it's one of the best displays currently available in terms of color and it gives you a larger workspace.

Some people look at this as a tiny detail that doesn't make much of a difference, but the screen is actually the most important thing to look for on this laptop, and I really would suggest looking at other laptops if you can't find an XPS 15 with the better screen that fits your price range.

If you already bought one with 720p you may wanna go ahead and cancel the order, because sometimes Dell (Home & Office) is finicky about cancelling orders if you do it too late.

    I did the same thing.

-- Processor: Intel Core i5-2410M processor
    -- 9 Cell Primary Battery
-- NVIDIA GeForce GT540M 2GB graphics with Optimus
    -- 6 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz (2 DIMMs)
-- 15.6 inch High Definition+ WLED Display with TrueLife
-- 500 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
-- Save 20% on all Dell Outlet Home Laptop or Desktop !- $161.80
-- XPS 15-L502X: 1 Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, In-Home Service after Remote
    Subtotal: $647.20
    Shipping Discount: -$19.99
    Sales Tax: $55.66

I think you got the better deal with the 8gb, I7, and the 1080 screen though.
