I Got My XPS 12 L221x (9Q23) What ever you want to call it Thursday
I got it with the Core I7-3517U with 8GB ram and a 128GB SSD
It so far has been great with the only issue being the Intel 6235 Wi-Fi Card leaves a lot to be desired. I wish dell used the 1901 Wi-Fi card as it is I think a better card overall. I have the Killer™ Wireless-N 1202 which is similar/identical to the 1901 spec wise enroute to replace the Intel card I bought it from amazon.
The screen is one of the best I have ever seen on a dell 1920x1080 @ 12.5' = DPI: 176.23 which is with is ~40dpi of what apple calls "Retina" and I do fin it hard to decipher the pixels
The viewing angle is very good as with most any IPS screen the viewing angle is great
I never used the duo so cant compare it to this but the screen rotation is very good and sturdy its very secure in the fact you can only spin it one way and I am afraid to push too hard but its very obvious which way to spin it. the frame around the aluminum LCD frame a lot more sturdy than I expected and looks.
I really like the carbon fiber chassis if you have played with the xps 13 it seems identical to the XPS 13 except for the added bumpers around the keyboard and the power button Is now a slider on the side which is very nice.
I have notices a hesitation on the touchpad from time to time but have uninstalled it and reinstalled it and haven't seen an issue since then. the touch screen in the past 4 days has stopped responding 2 times sleeping and reawaking the computer fixed it each time.
I did upgrade the ssd Sunday to the mushkin Atlas 240GB SSD I used the recovery utility to make the recovery utility it works like a dream. I have 2x's the storage for 1/2 the price + I have a 128GB for my xps 14 L421x as well up from the 32 it came with. Any ways it seem slightly faster at boot with that drive vs the pm830 it shipped with. the system gets around 5hrs battery life but lasts me a whole day as I put t to sleep when I don't need it.

If you remove the Intel 6235, won't you lose bluetooth functionality as well?
-
quick update on my touchpad rattle issues:
the dell tech did no exchange and told me this would be normal - and this seem to be typical teething troubles.
dell offered me to return it.
But apart from the touchpad problem I quite like the device.
So I opened it, removed the battery pack and found the problem libby2cm described above.
But I guess I solved it in another way, since I did not exactly understand where you (libby2cm) put your tape on.
Anyway, I put half-an-inch wide electrical tape horizontally across the touchpad backside - pretty much above the switches for left/right click. I also used one on each side extending the plastic hanger from above.
That did the job so far. No noise when touching or touch-click but the usual clicks/noise when using the clicking area. Works fine so far. Touchpad and chassis are still plane.
That´s how it worked for me:
I hope this will not disrupt any function/circuit some time/somehow. -

Its arrived! Can't be many of these in the UK at the moment.
It looks very nice and in the 20 minutes I've played with it I think its perfect for what I wanted.
Windows 8 is going to be quite a steep learning curve but overall I'm very happy -

anyone notice an issue with the trackpad and the mouse cursor "locking up" for a couple seconds here and there randomly?

Hi all,
Really good to find this thread, and all the experiences people are having with the XPS 12 so far. I was looking for an Ultrabook convertible, and it was between this and the Yoga. Unfortunately I'm an impatient git, so hate waiting for things, and although the XPS 12 was my preferred choice I kept waiting in case the Yoga became available sooner. Finally bit the bullet and ordered the i7 256GB XPS 12 on Nov 7th - I think the estimated delivery date is 3rd Dec, and it's killing me
Can't wait for it to arrive now - even checking the Dell status each day in case they manage to ship it sooner.
Anyway just wanted to say hello, thanks for the thread, and I'll update with my experiences once it arrives. -
Mine is due to arrive December 6th. I ordered Nov 8th. Refreshing every day now since it is possible that they ship it sooner...I am from Germany by the way.
Regarding the delay of their shipping units: my Dell salesman told me that Foxconn currently is lagging behind with their production because Apple was ordering a lot lately. Not so cool news...
Anyway chris_compson can you give more details about changing the SSD. I have 128 GB as well and would love to upgrade to 240 as 128 is just not enough. Is there anything I have to keep in mind?? -
Got the shock of my life just now...
Placed my order about a week ago (Nov. 4th), and the Estimated Ship Date has been staying at a miserable Dec. 21st the whole time (I check every day hoping for a miracle).
Well, today the lightning bolt from Dell came when I checked on the order status to find that it has SHIPPED!!!!
But wait, that's not all. I clicked on the FedEx Tracking Number, and apparently the darn thing is already on the truck in my town "Out for Delivery"!!! I guess Dell delays the posting of the SHIPPED status for several days to give time for the package to get a head start!!!!
I'm so psyched, I can't wait! -
kon.bick - hopefully ours will ship sooner than expected!! -
Hello all; first time poster here.
I ordered my XPS 12 the day after Windows 8 launched, and it arrived yesterday. For interested parties, I'm based in the UK and ordered the most basic version (i5, 4gb RAM, 128gb SSD). Anyway, it's my first computer in about 6 years that wasn't made by Apple, and my first ever Dell. I just loved the idea of the form factor, and wanted to replace both my iPad and aging Macbook Pro, and this seemed like an ideal choice.
Anyway, it's a really attractive bit of kit once you've taken the stickers off (which incidentally, come off fairly easily). The carbon fibre feels warmer and softer to the touch than Apple's aluminum, and everything else looks fairly smart. The monitor hinge is very robust, perhaps overly so, as it takes a fair amount of force to open the clamshell part, and you can only put pressure on the thin frame. The rotating mechanism locks into place with a satisfying click, in either orientation, and it won't budge unless you mean it to. The frame itself does have a bit of give to it, which I suppose is inevitable with this design. The panel itself is glorious; it's every bit as good-looking as the reviews say, though as has been mentioned, text is too small thanks to the HD resolution - you'll want to increase the default size. The keyboard has a good, meaty feel to the keys; they're not squishy, and feel just as good as the Apple keyboards I've been using for so long. The trackpad though? Well, I've been used to Macbook trackpads for so long, and this really does not measure up. The surface has slightly too much friction, and it seems to just stop tracking your finger every few moments, and won't start again until you take your finger away. Apple has pretty much perfected the trackpad, and Dell's effort is passable at best. I really hope this can be sorted with software updates. You can of course use the touchscreen, which incidentally is far, far more responsive, but whilst Windows 8 was clearly built around touch-enabled devices, the software you'll be using for the time being wasn't.
Internet Explorer is nice enough, but I'm too used to Chrome to give it much thought, and Google's browser doesn't seem to have any touch-oriented features that makes iOS so easy to use (unless I've missed an options pane somewhere). Buttons are too small, and there's no double-tap-to-zoom. The screen is as accurate as it can be, but unfortunately our fingers are not, and the software needs to catch up. Windows 8 is in its infancy right now, and it shows. I've no doubt the situation will improve as more Metro (yes, I'm still calling it that) apps launch, but you're not going to get the experience you get with iOS or Android at the moment. The OS in general is just as most reviewers say; it looks great, but it's unintuitive, and it'll take a bit of getting used to.
Anyway, that's my mini-review. It's a really nice laptop with tablet features, but it's not the best of both worlds.
And now a question; what are people using as a case? I had a brief pootle around Dell's horrible website, and couldn't find an official case for the '12. I dug out the old sleeve I used for my older, 13" white Macbook, and whilst it'll keep the thing from being scratched, it's a little roomy (the Macbook was at least an inch in depth, and slightly larger in other dimensions too). Really I want something that doesn't take too much effort to get the thing in and out of, and preferably one that doesn't have a zip. I'm sure there are plenty of unbranded ones on Amazon I could get, but I'd like something that fits well. -
EDIT: As far as cases are concerned your best bet is to go with the unbranded ones on amazon, they more or less fit the bill at the moment, unless you'd rather wait. -
Does anyone notice a grey circle in/under the Windows key when the backlight is on? (More visable when dark in room). It looks like a blotch of grey under the key.
Most noticable on the Windows key but they are grey areas on other keys when the backlight on them is on. -

So I know I'm a bit late to the party, but I just received my XPS12 today (ordered: 10/15/12). Can't wait to get home from work and play with it!
Does anyone know what type of stylus/digitizer pen is supported? I don't currently own one, but will be looking to purchase one in the near future. -
The XPS 12 doesn't support digitizers I'm afraid (the one thing that I would really have liked to have seen on it), but you'll be able to use any stylus suitable for use on tablets. -
Another UK owner here and I thought I'd take the time to write a brief review.

Another UK owner here and I thought I'd take the time to write a brief review.
The laptop arrived today and I will admit it does take abit of getting used to. However, I have to say that overall, I think its brilliant.
Positives would be the screen, it really makes the unit. The keyboard is pretty good, its the first time I've had a laptop which has space between the keys and I've finding it very easy to take to with accuracy seeming to be better than on my previous laptop keyboards. I opted for the i7/8gb/256gb model and its very quiet. I'm installing a game on Steam whilst typing this and its near silent with the fan very gently purring away. When just browsing the internet its totally silent.
The machine is very fast indeed. Moving through folders in Windows explorer is basically instant as is flipping between open programes. I've noticed no lag on anything at all.
The only negative I can really come up with is the touchpad. I echo the comments of others on here who find that it just stops responding. In fact its so unresponsive that I find myself using the touchscreen whenever I can to navigate. I'm hoping that a driver update will improve things. -

Had the weirdest call from Dell today.
Called to check my birth date and address?
When I gave it to him, he said "thank you, we will continue with your order now."
This is 4 days after ordering. So what have they been doing since then? -
Also, does anyone notice that there Windows 8 Home Button physical key on the screen gets a bit stuck/crunchy when you click the lower half of it?

Well the only SSD I tried in it is the mushkin Atlas Msata SSD and works fine. it is the std 50MM Msata drive type. just make sure you use either the dell backup and recovery through support center or have a dvd drive with win 8 as they are the only way I know to keep uefi.
also you will need a t5 torex screw driver to remove the 10 border screws and the Philips screw under the xps emblem/door and be careful removing the bottom fiber can be tricky start on the back and work your way around to the usb ports and it should pop loose. and one Philips screw hold the card down. -
I don't see a point of changing the SSD, IMO. The Samsung PM830 is a very GOOD mobile SSD. It's one of the few SSDs that allow battery life increases over platter HDDs and very fast as well.
Thinking of SSDs vs HDDs. Ultrabook manufacturers should offer 64GB SSD + HDD caching option. I think its a really good option for performance versus capacity. 32GB may be too small, while a pure SSD is too expensive and low in capacity. Offer users an option of using the two as a seperate drive or as a caching option. -

also the 256 ssds label states it is .1ma lower than the pm830 128
Also as for the caching that is a horrible idea imho I will never own a system that has a hdd in it any more that is a notebook/ultra book because hdds are prone to failing when jarred while running. Working on computers for a living I have seen only a few ssds fail 2-3 and all where pre trim and garbage collection. -

I updated it with my order -
So I finally got to unbox mine last night.
Initial thoughts:
Pros:
-Wow! The screen is superb, probably the best I have ever used on a notebook. It's bright, crisp, and has an amazing viewing angle.
-The flip screen is much more sturdy than I had anticipated. I don't see any problem here except that I keep wanting to flip it.
-The keyboard is quite nice. The keys are soft, well spaced, and have an adequate response during strokes.
-The touch screen is definitely growing on me. At first I didn't think I would like the 'metro' UI but it really works and works well IMO with a touch screen (not so much with a mouse).
-The speakers are much better than I expected. I haven't run them through the full gamut of genres, but for some soft acoustic music I found them more than adequate.
Cons:
-OMG! The trackpad is horrendous. How could Dell not notice how terribly unresponsive it is?! Routinely when trying to drag my mouse across the screen it will just stop and not respond to any motions. Further, I consistently find myself zooming out on a page when I am trying to scroll (this may just be that I am not used to using a multi-touch pad, but even so I thought it would be more forgiving). Dell needs to fix this ASAP! (I did install the most current driver 10/25/12).
-Also, the trackpad buttons click much too loudly for my liking.
Other thoughts:
-Windows 8 is strange. It is definitely going to take some getting used to. I feel like it is a mash-up of my smart phone and my Windows 7 machine. For media consumption I love the 'metro'/tiles apps. But for work I will probably go straight back to the desktop.
I will post more as I get time to try out the XPS in many different usage environments. -
OK, just got mine late yesterday. I have the Intel Core i7-3517 with the Samsung PM830 SSD (256GB).
Initial impressions are that this thing is really, really fast. I ran the WEI, and the SamSung SSD is raking in a whopping score of 8.1. I have never even seen a score this high on the WEI. However, the overall score is being held down to 5.5 because of the horribly low Desktop Graphics Score of 5.5. Maybe an updated driver will help for the Intel Graphics 4000 chipset (I'll post back here if it does). I don't do any gaming on this laptop, so it doesn't really bother me. It sure doesn't slow the laptop down for normal day-to-day activities for me.
In the span of only about 2 hours (using an external DVD-ROM), I was able to install Office 2010 Pro, PowerBuilder, SQL Server 2008 R2, Visual Studio 2010, Visual Studio 2012, VMWare Workstation, Adobe PhotoShop CS2, and MacroMedia DreamWeaver. Needless to say the progress bars were flying across the screen at a blistering pace. I did occasionally hear the fans kick on, but nothing too loud at all.
Here are the things you need to watch out for (and change if you want):
1. After flawless WiFi performance all night, I decided to un-plug the unit and use it in tablet mode in my lap on the lazy-chair. The Wi-Fi performance instantly plummeted and went to the crapper. I recognized what it was right away (power-saving setting). To fix this, go to Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Power Options, Change Plan Settings, Change Advanced Power Settings, Wireless Adapter Settings, Power Saving Mode, and you will see that by default Dell configures the WiFi to "Medium Power Saving". Change it to "Maximum Performance" and the WiFi will work like a champ when roaming about when you're not plugged in.
2. I use an external monitor about 90% of the time (since I use my laptop all day at work as a consultant), and when I first hooked my external monitor up using a mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter and a DVI cable, the laptop kept switching back to the laptop screen and turned off the external monitor display. I kept having to use the Fn + F1 key combination to keep switching to "Second Monitor Only". I was installing OS patches at the time, so I just ignored it for a while, but it kept happening even after the patches were done and I was installing application software (Visual Studio). I decided to use my DVI to HDMI adapter in combination with my mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter to run an HDMI cable to the monitor instead of the DVI cable, and it seemed to behave better. Then the problem just completely went away. At work, I don't have an HDMI input on my monitor, so I had to use the DVI cable, and I was dreading whether it would mess up again, but it has been 3 hours now without any problems whatsoever. Who knows why this was happening. Oh well.
3. When you connect to your WiFi router, Windows 8 defaults all the wireless network connections to "Public", so don't expect the HomeGroup or any Sharing to work. You will have to right-click on the WiFi connection after connecting and choose "Turn Sharing On or Off" and select "Yes, turn on sharing and connect to devices".
On a side note, my previous laptop was an ASUS, and I was pretty impressed by the driver management software that they provided that would automatically tell you if there was a new driver available for anything in your system, and would automatically download and install it (including BIOS updates). With the Dell XPS-12, all I've found is a program called "Dell Support Center" that just has a button for "Drivers" that just takes you to the Dell website where you have to review the drivers available, and manually compare the versions with what is currently displayed after you drill down into each component in the Device Manager window. What a pain. But that's a pretty small complaint, all things considered, for such a great laptop/tablet convertible. My wife was stunned when I gave her a demo of the laptop and all of the sudden flipped the screen on her and started using it as a tablet! -
Here's a mystery to solve. My XPS-12 is occasionally (maybe once every 5 minutes) giving an audible alert sound. It is trying to get my attention, for what, I do not know. I'm just browsing Reddit in the Chrome browser on my Desktop, and I hear the alert sound. I press the flag key to return to the Metro desktop, and there's no alert message to be found anywhere. Next, I went to the Control Panel, Hardware, Sounds and tried to track down which sound event is being fired, but UNFORTUNATELY Dell (or Microsoft, not sure) has decided in their infinite wisdom to make almost every kind of sound event make the exact same sound, even though the name of the .wav file being called out is different!
Grrrr. That leaves me with the unenviable task of changing the sound of each type of event to something different to track this down manually.
What a drag! -
I got mine today wow this is a really nice notebook:
The screen is nice, it's bright, sharp and the touchscreen is really responsive.
Keyboard is solid no flex at all just takes a bit of getting used to as it is smaller then what I had before.
The screen flips back and forth without any problems.
The track pad does suck it will move up on it's own and sometimes is unresponsive. I seems to brush the track pad when I am typing which causes me to change to a different screen that is annoying.
The notebook is small and light weight so it is easy to carry around.
I am not sure how much I would use it as a tablet but I really like it for a notebook it has the speed, the storage everything I need in a portable notebook. -

Does anyone else notice that when you click the lower half of the Wndows 8 physical button on the touch screen that it's crunchy and clicks differently then if you push it in the center?
Doesn't effect the way it works, but it feels clicky and gets stuck a bit? -

nope it seems perfect to me no matter how I hit it.
a a side nete my killer 1202 came in will report back shortly with my experiance -
Also, try clicking the windows button at the bottom right corner.. It doesnt get stuck a bit?
To clarify, i'm talking about the button on the actual touchscreen, not the key on the keyboard. -
Wow, so it looks like everyone that ordered way after me is getting theirs earlier.

Yes my track pad makes a clicking noise when I click it and I don't have a problem with it clicking the clicking sound is a tad louder than my MacBook air and a bit louder than my xps 14 but I don't have any complaints except for a tad it of latency on the pad but I find my self using the screen a lot so doesn't bother me too much.
As for my new Killer wireless I think it is much better than the intel card I see wireless I didn't know that appear to be at least 1000+Ft away if not further as I have never seen them and get a very steady speed running speedtest.net I get:
Ping----Download-----Upload-----Card

70 seconds------13MBps avg------------Bigfoot 1202
108 seconds----9MBps avg-------------Intel 6235
I would have to say the 1202 is a lot faster and more steady connection than the Intel 6235 -
Sorry, maybe I worded it wrong. It doesn't stick - the cicking sound is just a bit different.
Like if I click the bottom of the button with my finger it won't give the same 'click' as it would if I pushed it dead center.
Do you share the same thing?
Also for the trackpad, I'm not talking about the clicking sound that it makes when you push it. I'm talking about the issue others noted about it being loose thus causing a click noise.

so I would say for now the touchpad is fine. -
Mine was originally set to be delivered on November 22nd, so it came a good week and a half early. My order was placed quite early on though, so I may just have been lucky. It was in pre-production for a week I think.
To answer the performance as a tablet question, it helps to be familiar with how iOS and Android tablets work. When you tap the screen on either of these other OSes, it records the entire area of your finger, and then intelligently works out what it was you were trying to click. This is massively useful on websites that aren't specifically formatted for touchscreen use, as web links tend to be fairly small. Now in Windows 8, this process doesn't happen; the OS seems to take either the very first pixel that registers a touch, or the exact centre of the area of your finger, and then performs a mouse click in that exact spot. It doesn't make the thing unusable, but the experience is a little more frustrating, especially if you're a big forum user. Microsoft's own IE10 is better set up for a touchscreen than Chrome is currently, as it offers a few features like double-tap to zoom which make the experience a little more comfortable to someone like myself who has switched from an iPad.
Regardless, the XPS 12's biggest asset is its ability to switch quickly from tablet to laptop. There are plenty of other options at the moment, but I loved the simplicity of the screen rotation, and it seems a lot less likely to go wrong than, say, Sony's offering (which apparently has exposed ribbon cables in the sliding mechanism). The machine is beautifully built, and feels really solid. If it weren't for the dire trackpad, it'd be pretty much a perfect piece of hardware; the software just needs to catch up. -
Im sorry to see that weve disappointed you. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience we may have caused.

And for the Windows 8 button on the touch screen, do you notice it makes different clicking sounds and the button gives different tactile responses based on where you push it? Primarily when you push the bottom of it>

Hello netrowdy,
I have the same computer, the same partitions and also like to have separate drive for my work. Like to divide C into C, D and E. Did you arrive at any solution? Anybody else can help?
I had the same problem 3 years ago with XPS. I did repartition HD than. -

I am having a problem with the flip screen it doesn't seem to lock in solid, I had the notebook on my lap moved my knee and the screen popped out like I was changing it to tablet mode is there anyway to tighten the screen so it doesn't pop out when you touch the back? The gap at the top of the screen is quite large so I am wondering if that is the issue with the screen not being in tight.

Do you find when you click the bottom of the button that sometimes the response is a bit crunchy? (the button always works) -
