Can anyone confirm the quality of the viewing angles on the HiDPI screen? I'm getting conflicting results in reviews, from great:

    ...to appalling:

I recently picked up an Acer Aspire R13, and aside from the screen (which looks like the latter), it's fine. But when the color changes even if you sit directly perpendicular to the screen, it's very annoying and distracting. Not to mention there aren't any true blacks, just dark grays. Need to get something with a better screen, but similarly spec'd. Which image above more closely matches the XPS 13's display?

Yeah, I checked out their review of the R13, which they said was great. I think they're just measuring the ability to see what's on the screen, not for color accuracy. Here's what they say about the R13:

"The viewing angle stability of the IPS panel can completely impress us. There are hardly any picture distortions, even with very wide angles, the only issue is a slight gray hue from below."

    And their image:

As you can see, even head on, there's no black. There's no "slight" about it, and there are even color shifts which you can see slightly. This is exactly what I see in real life, so that's why I'm worried about the XPS 13 (which was the QHD+ model being tested). Unfortunately, there aren't really any other sites that do viewing angle tests and actually show the images.

Keep in mind that every single display that comes off the line may exhibit slightly different characteristics, and very few IPS panels do well when you're off angle both horizontally *and* vertically. The "glow" is pretty much standard fare. Although, there seems to be something going on with the exposure in the Notebookcheck photo of the XPS, the color strip on the right side is completely missing certain colors. I strongly suspect it didn't appear that way in person and that shot should have been retaken by the reviewer. The only issue I have off-angle with the QHD+ is a fair amount of brightness loss (maybe a little more than other IPS screens i've seen), but I see no major color shifts. The Acer pictures and the Dell pictures were not taken at the same angles either, the Dell's horizontal/vertical off-angle shots were taken at more extreme screen tilts.
