Im thinking of upgrading to the xps 13 but I would like to hear from other xps owners as to whether it will be possible to connect the xps 13 to an external 4k monitor @ 60Hz using a mini DP to DP cable. Has anyone else done this or at least know if it is possible to power 4k @ 60Hz with the xps 13 and the intel HD 5500 graphics? And as a side note, is this xps 13 touch worth buying? Thanks

Yes you can connect to a 4k display using the miniDP connector.

And no, don't get the touch version of this laptop (3200x1800 resolution). The touch display is glossy and will attract fingerprints, has such a high DPI that it's hard to read text without using scaling, and gets significantly lower battery life. The 1080p non-touch version is a matte display, that gets an additional 3-4 hours of battery life over the touchscreen version

Thank you, definitely something I should reconsider considering I do a lot of my programming homework outdoors on campus

after using both side by side It would be next to impossible for me to keep the 1080p one . Retina screens for the win :)

To each his own. But be aware that the high-resolution (1800p) version of the screen significantly impacts the battery life of the laptop.

The 1800p version of the screen can also run into Windows DPI scaling issues. And it's a glossy screen, whereas the 1080p version is matte. However, these two differences (DPI and glossy) are more of a personal preference.

You just need the right adapter cable for it.

I don't know the exact model / revision of XPS 13 you have. But you will either need a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter / cable, or a Thunderbolt 3 to DisplayPort adapter, and then a DiaplayPort cable.

It doesn't matter what the resolution of the laptop panel is. It matters what graphics chip set is in your laptop, and what display connectors are available. You are fine going to a 4K monitor.

Ah thought so thanks! I went on live chat for dell and a with start tech the cable company. 2 people said the display itself on the device needed to be 4K for the 4K monitor to show 4K the other 2 said the video driver can drive 4k 60 Hz. The resolution on the actual unit doesn't have anything to do with whether it can drive a display. Dam what a bunch of dummies. Anyways thanks

Yeah, a forum like this will be a much better resource for info.

The customer service reps you reach when you contact them by web chat or phone are usually not computer experts. Their job only requires them to read a script, and look up product recommendations on their computer. They do not need to actually have any tech knowledge or experience.

Also remember, that if the company doesn't actually sell the part you need (like a specific adapter cable), then the rep won't be able to find it in their inventory. And if they cant find it, then they won't have any idea what to tell you.

I have lg27ud88 and dell xps 13 model 9343 so 2015 year intel hd5500 graphics with mini display port. For the life of me I cannot get it to work 4K 60hz with DisplayPort 1.2 on, on the monitor. Needs to be otherwise you do not see the 60hz option in the graphics driver. I just get a blank screen.
4K 30hz with the monitor disabled for DisplayPort 1.2 works fine. The cable is startech so a good brand. Running Windows 10.
Anyone had similar issues. I am yet to try all the different combinations, though a Mac air worked at 4K 30 hz with the monitors display port 1.2 enabled. Still need to try my dell with a different 4K.

Update time. I got it to work. The issue was the cable. So startech cable according to startech does work. According to me it does not work. Accell cable is vesa certified and worked. Beautiful 4k @ 60hz.

    Whole story:

Why oh why 4k @ 60Hz is such a challenge I don't know. Ok it's a lot of data but the manufacturers seem really unrealiable on this. The other complication is that monitors have the displayport 1.2 enable/disable.
I had a nightmare getting this to work.
Cable 1 - cheap. my bad, actually bent the pins on my dell 9343 so I had to get the motherboard replaced. Fortunately I was under warrantee and had accidental damage if dell wanted to argue.
Cable 2 - startech - meant to work. Did not 4k @ 30Hz fine. Enable diplsayport 1.2 on monitor to access 60Hz black screen. What led me to think it was PC issue was the fact that a mac book air could drive 4k @ 30Hz with displayport 1.2 enabled. I guess it worked as the computer was not pushing out the displayport 1.2 signal.
Cable 3 - accell, This one. Was not holding out much buy hey it was certified. Plugged in switched monitor to enable display port 1.2 held breath waiting for black screen, and it worked. Switched to 60Hz and still works. No flicker no artefacts of any type.
