I've been working with the XPS 13 and a trial BIOS update, recording and reporting temperatures and fan behavior to Dell, and a question came up about preferred behavior. It occurred to me that my personal preference might not necessarily be what most people would prefer, so this is the perfect place to throw a poll at y'all.

Assuming for the sake of argument, that the fan has 3 states: off, low RPM, and high RPM, which of the two behaviors would you prefer to see as "normal" behavior?

(Obviously there are extenuating circumstances depending on just how high the internal temperatures get where the fan would cool at low RPM and then go to higher RPM, but let's use the simplest case scenario that the fan is off, the temperature threshold is met, and cooling is needed.)

There is no guarantee that the results of this poll will influence any decision one way or the other, but they are interested in people's opinions.

Once the fan and track-pad are resolved..... I will be putting my $$$ on the table and purchasing one.

Never hurts to see the opinions.

From what I am seeing posted by Bill and from what I have been told by many if my inside guys at Dell, these issues have the attention of the execs. I think Dell realizes how important this first entry is. If they don't squash the issues now and quickly it will be hard to get people on refreshes and new products.

Thanks for the poll! Wont let me rep you because I already have ;)

My main issue with the fan is the pitch of the noise, the thing is not quiet. My M11X R2 is barely audible at 100% CPU usage. My wife's MBA, we have both never heard it. Ever. Make it that way and I will buy again. I returned mine due to the noise even after A02 update. I really wanted to keep it.

Since the A02 BIOS update, the fan has been more than acceptable. I really like this laptop. Generally, the fan only comes on during high-stress processor loads and it shuts down or goes to low a few seconds later. I hear it come on now and again, but its really not loud or disturbing anymore. Its certainly the quietest laptop I've ever owned (my last laptop was an alienware m15x -- my god that was heavy and loud).

Anyway, I just wanted to chime in that I'm very happy with the fan since the A02 update (it was like a rocket on the A01). Could it be better? Yes, the brief 10 second spike to max when I launch warcraft probably isn't necessary...but its not the end of the world in any way.

I've updated to BIOS A02 and haven't had any problems. I may also be an exception but I'm not having any problems with the Trackpad either. Once I went in and customized the settings to my personal preferences I've had no problems at all.
