We all know the XPS 13 is well overdue for an Ivy bridge refresh. With windows 8 around the corner and all the news about other manufacturers announcing windows 8 laptops, it adds to the anticipation even more. Do you guys think that the XPS Duo 12 announced at IFA IS the XPS 13 refresh? Personally I think that its a different product line, and we will see an XPS 13 with higher resolution touch screen before the end of the year. Thoughts?

If the XPS 13 were to get a refresh, it would be within this calendar year. The XPS Duo is new to the XPS lineup, and both platforms will remain. i will keep tabs on this thread and weigh in with the usual "if this product exists, it would have __________" comments as we get closer to an alleged launch.

There will be some messaging around product launch time to clarify a few things, and I'll use this thread to get the word out.

Thanks Bill. You're a priceless one-of-a-kind, and the best value-added feature on this forum.

OK, now that you're properly buttered up: please feel free to check back in to the XPS 14 owners thread as well if there's any refresh news on that front. I'm particularly curious if a 640m (even LE) or 650m is in the next product cycle, or any other tweaks for that matter.

I'd like to see a higher quality display; possibly higher resolution. Perhaps more than anything, though, I'd like it to be quieter than the current model.

i'm definitely in for this - the xps 13 would be PERFECT if it had a slightly better res 1440x900 ish or whatever... and that's pretty much it. hoep they keep the ssd the same and of course the upgrade to ivy bridge

Higher resolution screen technically could be already possible, but if you want quieter operation better if you wait for Haswell APU Refresh, which will offer 50% cooler operation and might will be strong enough to not need discrete GPU.

I've been waiting since June for the XPS13 to get Ivy Bridge, and it still hasn't happened. I'm really wanting an ultrabook/ultraportable from Dell, and this looks like it's the best option by far ... except I can't stand having old components.

Please Dell, where is my new Ivy Bridge XPS13 (or an Ivy Bridge m11x will do :D )

You'd think, with hi-res monitors becoming more common, they'd have tried to go for at least 1080p.

I hope, at least, the XPS14 and 15 get a similar refresh and have decent hardware to overcome the issues they seem to be fraught with at the moment.

Its nice that they added an 8GB RAM option, but with the crappy low res screen, I'm going to look elsewhere.

Wow. Why is this about 3-4 months late?? I don't see any reason why the would have needed to hold up on this release. It's not as if they really changed much with the design.

    Same crappy 720p screen
    No touchscreen for Win8
    Still no HDMI
    No dedicated PageUp/Down/Home/End keys

It's no wonder Dell has been losing market share. This should have been an updated release 3 months ago.

And you're saying I can't get this with Windows 7 from the factory??? Are you kidding me?

Yeah mate, I'm with you. I just can't believe that they held out this long. The only reason seems to be that they wanted to release it with Windows 8. Perhaps so that they can advertise it along with their other Windows 8 releases.

Or, they might have over-estimated interest and have too much old stock. They've been running clearance specials in Australia for at least a month.

I wanted a better screen too - possibly touch but not essential - and will need the option of running windows 7 so I can use it at work. I hope more options show up soon.

I'm starting to think they're using the updated version as a non-touch option for people wanting Windows 8, and they're using their most successful laptop to get attention. (XPS 13 seems to have the highest rating of all laptops on Dell website)

And I heard rumors that it was going to have Ivy Bridge for a least 6 months prior to it actually getting it. And it wasn't upgraded until a year after it's release. This is a huge disaster for them.

Surely, they can't release their flagship device with an OS that highlights touchscreen functionality, with an old screen that doesn't support it, can they? Surely Dell isn't that stupid  .....

That'd be as dumb as an Android manufacturer releasing their flagship device with Gingerbread and a resistive touchscreen.

I doubt they will ever have a touchscreen option actually, as their new xps 12 duo is what that'll be for, i think the only reason they are offering win 8 on the 13 is to stay current and 'with the times'

I may be wrong but i wouldnt get your hopes up. On a obvious note though, win 8 is a lot better on a touchscreen and wont be putting it on my desktop. I feel they have isolated half of their market, but i suppose thats why win 7 prices havent dropped and win 8 prices have. Maybe company's will use this win 8 motivation to upgrade from xp to 7.

Looking at the specs on the XPS 12, do people think Dell is using an IPS (or similar technology) panel? The spec says 160 degrees, rather than the usual 170-178 spec we ordinarily see w/ IPS et al. I've seen TN panels with a 160 spec, but I don't see a precise spec on the 12 and I hestitate to guess about it. Any thoughts?

The XPS 13 should have been refreshed with IvyBridge months ago. Now, Dell releases the XPS 12 with a 1080p IPS touchscreen display and fails to give the 13 upgraded resolution. Fail!

I'm sort of interested in the XPS 12 Duo, except I don't actually want to run Windows 8 on it (I don't care for the Win 8 UI). I mostly just want something like the XPS 13 but without the rubbish display that the 13 has. However, I'm not sure how well it'd work if I put Windows 7 on it...

You do realize you're pushing all the "I'm a troll" buttons, right:

    (1) new forum member
    (2) posting a surprising fact
    (3) no supporting link offered
    (4) no explanation offered for why you can't offer a link

I have no choice but to conclude you are a Dell employee, leaking information! Except a Dell employee would say "internet", not "intranet." I'm stumped!

too late for me since I finally jumped ship in this XPS fiasco this generation and went the opposite size direction with a 17R SE. I'd be upset if they actually did release a FHD XPS 13, though, since a big reason I went ahead with the SE purchase was the news that the 13 refresh wouldn't update the screen.

My mistake. I didn't realize it was the same guy as the previous posts.

What's wrong with that part? I'm assuming he is, or is pretending to be a Dell employee and is claiming to not want to link to the company's intranet.

If this is true, what are the chances of a FHD XPS14. I don't think it'd make sense to leave it with a 900p display while its smaller and larger siblings have FHD screens.

Maybe you're right. I think I originally read "intranet" as a typo for "internet" but then of course if he meant "intra" that's technically true. Sorry for not thinking it through.
