I see a headphone jack but is there some way to insert a microphone to record on the XPS 13? We often transfer dictation from an older microcassette recorder (not digital) to Audacity, a program on the computer. It requires a cable from the recorder's earphone jack to the computer's microphone jack.

I guess no one else is concerned with the dual audio jack that doesn't let you use a separate microphone or line-in. Just ordered a splitter. And no one is concerned with the external usb dvd burner whose shipped software gives an error and doesn't seem to work and I beleive it is not Windows 7 capable. Just ordered Windows 7 burning software b/c what came (Roxio 12DE and 13.1 suite) is Vista at best. So 2 unexpected purchases after the XPS 13 ultrabook and external DVD themselves.

The headphone jack doubles as a mic jack. Have you tried plugging in the cassette?

Yes we tried using the adapter that usually goes from its headphone (earphone?) jack to the microphone jack on a laptop, but this time went to this combo jack. For some reason, it recorded our talking outside the computer instead of what should have come over from the cassette! That could be very embarrassing since we were arguing about something at the time :)
