Ok so the more I read, it sounds like the problem is with the chip itself. Does this mean the copper mod wont completely fix the problem with the 1330? That also means any DELL or Notebook with the Nvidia 8400 or 8600 are possibly faulty. Am I understanding this correctly?

This is from the recent news on the mainpage:
    http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Nvidia-GPU-failure,6248.html

Now im scared to buy ANY laptop with a dedicated Nvidia GPU...

maybe i should just get an integrated one... i dont play games THAT much anyways. I guess thats what my desktop could be used for.

The copper mod has nothing to do with the defect. I guess people never really understood it has to do with the underfill of the chip. Read theinquirer.net they are always good about that type of stuff. I didn't buy a dell because I game a lot and was going to take my laptop all over college.

I'm really at a loss for why so many people here are still buying XPS's right now. If we all stopped and expressed our concern they would easily just release the new montevina xps. Instead we support the old santa rosa xps and get less for our money. A fully configured slower XPS with shorter batterylife and a defective GPU is worth the same amount almost as a faster T400 with longer battery life and a non defective gpu. The only thing better about dell is the support but since I haven't seen anyone here mention that when they bought a laptop I'm at a loss.

By the way just to revise what you said, any gfx card you get from nvidia could be faulty. They used the same underfill technique for the first back of Geforce 9 processors before switching so you really can't tell. I simply wouldn't mind having a defective Geforce 9 but having a defective and older chip that they possibly might not have replacements for 4 years from now is not that great of an idea.

Simply put, don't buy Geforce 8 laptops if you want to avoid having to ever ship your laptop in for a repair. Get a faster laptop with Centrino 2 from another company until dell decides that their customers are worth giving Centrino 2 to.

Edit: By the way Dell knew about the defective chips since November(last year) and has continued to sell them anyway and theinquirer.net has been talking about these defective chips for like 3 months.
