I just bought a Studio XPS 1340. 64 bit windows vista is installed. When I tried to put the computer in High Performance mode, it just shuts off. I have the upgraded 256 "hybrid" graphics card. I kept trying to use it in High Performance but the computer would just shut off after a minute or so.
I called dell, the rep stated that you cannot use high performance mode with 64 bit vista with only 4 gigs of ram (which i have) she said that in order to use high performance mode I need to buy a new computer with 32 bit OS installed, or upgrade mine to 8 gigs of RAM. I have waited forever for this thing and I dont understand why I cannot use high performance mode with 4 gigs of RAM? Is this really true?? Why would they sell a computer that does not work with the configured setup.

By high performance mode are you talking about the setting you change by clicking on the battery icon?
If so, go back to Dell and tell them to give you someone to speak to who knows the difference between their backside and their elbow. -
100% agreed. Dell has some real winners... Call them back and re-open the case#. -
thank you for your responses (yes i was referring to the battery icon and clicking on it to change it to high performance rather than power save, etc.)
i called back, the next guy i talked to said that the only difference between 64 bit and 32 bit vista is the amount of memory it can handle. he said this laptop should work in high performance mode with a 64 bit OS and 4 gigs of memory.
they are giving me an even exchange (after talking to 4 people and around 3 hours of hold time) because he said something might be wrong with my motherboard. i hope he is right and there is no merit to the 64 bit operating system not working in high performance mode without 8 gigs, or i am just going to go through this all over again since the new system they are sending me has the same specs as this one. very sketchy. i always thought dell was the lesser of the many many evils

They have no idea what they are talking about. 32-bit or 64-bit have nothing to do with it.
Just be sure your "even exchange" is not a refurbished system (which 99.999% of all replacements are). They should be building you a new system. -
Their exchange program typically means you'll get a refurbished system. I would really push them on a new system if you've only just got this machine. Make sure you get it in an email from them. Live chat or a phone call will not suffice,because you want something you can throw back at them if they don't follow through.
Otherwise, ask for a refund. -

thank you for pointing that out, i didnt realize they might do that. i am on hold right now with them to make sure they send me a new system not refurbished. i will have them email me it in writing, thank you again for your responses and pointing this out -
Thats not actually correct. All exchanges within 30 days are brand new systems that are built after the exchange has been approved. Post 30 days they have the option of sending a refurb which an educated consumer can make sure doesn't occur if they speak with the rep.

There is a member on this forum that requested an exchange after 3 weeks and he got a refurb. The only way to absolutely guarantee a new system is to have written confirmation. There is nothing contractual for Dell to provide a new system except the first one that is shipped.

Sorry been through this with people a million times here and outside the forum and have clarified it with Dell in the many dealings I have had with them. Unless you bought a refurb, your return for exchange within the first 30 days means they willorder you a new one and it will be built.
It is contractual in their policies. It has always been such and youwill never get anything as suggestedin writing, exceptof course, the neworder number which everyone gets that shows it is being skewed as a new build.

...In any warranty, if the service is setup inside the first 30 days from the invoice date, the replacement will be New. Outside of the first 30 days from the invoice date, the replacement will be Refurbished -
Well having just checked through my contract I'm afraid I have to disagree. Well partly disagree. It may very well be the case in Canada or the US or whatever, but not for me in the UK.
Mind you, you get longer to return the product anyway I believe, we only get 7 days. -
Sorry, I did not realize that you were in England but, yes, your return time in many countries is different as I recall. You will not find the return/replacement policy in the warranty paperwork to the best of my knowledge but I could be wrong;I recall trying to digup the exact policy by number about a year and a half ago for someone.
Myself.....picking up my system exchange Studio XPS 1340 with a 256Gb ssd in the am...finally here. My system was granted after two years and only 2 failures of this mobo...It is brand new and not a rebuild. They have upgraded me drastically.
The trick is gettingpast customer service to the "Customer Resolution" Team. You need to be insistent, without being angered, and find the right route of access.
