    Hey at least Dell dropped the top tier price back down to $2,299.99 still cheaper at Costco..

    Wow, I have just realized that warranty/support included on M3800 is only 1 year, instead of 3 Years as the others Precision.
    So the M3800 seems very pricey without a real reason.

    The mother boards are different. m3800 is Mobile Intel® HM87 Express but xps is Mobile Intel® HM77, but I don't know whether it cost more money or better?
    Anyone has idea?

    A few reasons:

    1) Quadro. Probably doesn't cost NVIDIA any more to make since the GeForce chip is the same silicon (though there may be extra related costs around supporting professionals, R&D on those features and associated drivers, etc), but the extra features enabled on Quadro chips, drivers, and ISV certification are all worth something to customers in certain segments, thus they cost more.

    2) ProSupport as I understand it is also somewhat different from Enhanced Support since you get single-agent accountability throughout the troubleshooting and remediation process. You also get guaranteed North American support reps.

    3) Precision M3800 includes a dongle to accept the regular-size AC adapters as well as a USB to Ethernet dongle. Both of those are accessory options on the XPS 15.

    4) Most XPS 15 specs ship with Windows 8.1 Core, not Pro.

    5) Specs suggest that the Precision has TPM but maybe not NFC, whereas the XPS may be the other way around. EDIT: Someone confirmed that the XPS has both TPM and NFC. No word on the M3800 yet, but I would bet it has both as well.

    I'm still confused by the weight discrepancy though. I know a while back it was speculated that the 4.15 lbs quoted for the Precision would be with an mSATA drive, the small battery, and no HDD, but that doesn't appear to be a spec that can be ordered. Then again, all of the Precision specs list the same 4.15 lb weight when they surely don't weigh exactly the same; same goes for the different XPS 15 specs, though there the claimed weight is 4.44 lbs.

    In any case, I ordered a top-spec XPS 15 that should arrive soon. I had planned to order an M3800 until I learned that there was an XPS 15 that would be identical. I just never even bothered to look at the consumer-grade stuff since I've been a sucker for Latitude and Precision equipment for so long. Glad I did because it saved me a nice chunk of change, especially considering that my employee discount for some reason can only be used in the Home store where the Latitudes and Precisions aren't available anyway and thus I'd have had to pay full price for an M3800 rather than saving 17% on an XPS 15!

    I'm betting that's a typo, especially since the XPS 15 chipset driver specifically lists Intel 8 Series. On the M3800 thread it was suggested for a while that the Precision had the QM87 chipset, with the only difference compared to HM87 being support for vPro (specifically Intel AMT). I highly doubt that there's a generational difference in chipset given that these two machines appear to be identical from a hardware standpoint except for GPU and the Precision having TPM while the XPS has NFC.

    This is all probably launch day pains, just like the weight discrepancy I mentioned above.

    That is incorrect. According to ark.intel.com HM77 does not support the Haswell processors, therefore it can't be the chipset in the XPS.

    This is just to compare GT750m on XPS15 and K1100 on M3800.

    Doesn't CPU-Z show you what chipset is in use? Anyone with an XPS 15 willing to run CPU-Z and post the outputs.. and then run 3DMark? 3Dmark should only take like 15 minutes of your time :)

    Sorry to bump this but I can't get it to work and no one else seems to have the same problems. It won't let me choose independent scaling levels for each display which is really annoying as 200% on 1080p 23" monitor looks really bad.

    You guys have made some excellent points about RAID-0 reliability and also firmware upgrades. I haven't thought about it!

    So, I decided against RAID-0. Not worth it, especially if it's not a hardware-based RAID.
    Instead, I will go with a bootable mSATA SSD and a 2.5" Hard Drive for data.

    While I agree that running RAID 0 is very risky and of dubious benefit when a single SSD these days can nearly saturate a 6Gbps SATA connection, I think you may be incorrect about hardware RAID support on the BIOS. First, the XPS 15 supports Intel Smart Response (SSD + regular HDD shown as a single volume with the former used as a cache), which their white paper says requires that their chipset be configured in the BIOS for RAID mode. And second, you don't configure RAID volumes in the BIOS ever anyway; the BIOS is only used to put the controller into RAID mode as opposed to just AHCI or Legacy. Then after POST but before booting Windows there's typically a point where you'd be asked to press a certain key or key combination to configure the SATA controller; THAT'S where you'd actually create RAID volumes. I suppose it's possible that there's hardware support for RAID in the system but Dell locked out the controller configuration page that would allow you to create RAID volumes, but I'd like to hear from an XPS 15 owner who can investigate this rather than just assuming the box doesn't support RAID purely because the previous generation didn't.

    Yeah a few people have been reporting this, and weirdly there isn't a touchscreen driver on the support page. Can you check Device Manager to see if it's a native Microsoft driver? In any case, hopefully a driver update from Dell/Microsoft and/or a firmware update is forthcoming.

    The buzzing noise could be a "ground loop", and not an issue with the laptop. It seems some people do not have the issue, which makes sense, not everyone will have a group loop in their wiring.

    From wikipedia: "Some of the most notorious effects of ground loops are the noise and interference that can become present in audio, video, and radio transmission systems. They can also create an electric shock hazard, since ostensibly "grounded" parts of the equipment, which are often accessible to users, are not at ground potential."

    I believe this is the C2 stepping of the HM87 chipset (rev. 04 is the C1 stepping). This is good news, as this should fix the USB3 issue with the first revision of Haswell.

    That's still hardware RAID, just handled through the add-in card post-BIOS pre-boot sequence.

    But I've also worked with, as in personally used, older machines that had the raid manager integrated in the system bios. On two systems where the mainboard included hardware raid.

    it's probably really the same thing.

    But the upshot is that I'm out on the limb believing that the XPS doesn't have any pre-boot raid volume configuration support, nor actual hardware acceleration. Just the same intermediate step that the L521X had that works with the Intel Rapid Storage driver.

    I'm having a colossal problem with my wi-fi and I'm about at my wit's end. I'm transferring over all my documents from my old laptop to my new one using shared folders over wi-fi. Slow, but it's the best option I have. Problem is, the copy transfer will run for a while, then I'll watch as the speed quickly takes a nosedive and I suddenly have no internet access. Sometimes the wi-fi icon shows limited connectivity, but sometimes it doesn't. I've had this happen as frequently as every couple minutes to as long as every few hours. The only thing that fixes it is running the troubleshooter, which resets the wi-fi, or by manually turning wi-fi off and back on again.

    I don't even know how to begin to diagnose this. It's happened a couple times even when I haven't been file sharing. Do I have a bad piece of hardware? I've re-installed the drivers and run all windows updates. Really need help... thanks!

    A few people commented a while back that this seemed to resolve some intermittent issues even though you lost a couple features (though I think you gained some as well). I tried searching but couldn't find the actual post. UPDATE: Jump back to Page 34, the discussion starts there and drops off, then resumes around 46.

    Try getting the latest drivers off of Intel's page, not Dell's? And of course updating your router firmware couldn't hurt if you haven't already.

    try resetting your wireless router. ive had this happen to me a bunch...not on the new machine..but on my old inspiron...i used a belkin wireless...and when downloading large files, the wireless would krap out, and i would have to unplug and reboot router...give that a shot

    I don't understand everyone's beef with Windows 8. Sure there are a few things I don't like. I think Windows 7 was great. But I think they did some pretty slick things in win8. I'm not sure why Skype has to be fullscreen. The whole start button thing is ing ridiculous as its basically there in that metro window (I use launchy anyhow).

    That begin said, I'm definitely liking the XPS15 so far. I'm still migrating data so I have not yet tested it out as my development machine, but so far I think the screen is great, sound is really good, performance is fantastic, win8 is pretty good.

    The only minor gripes I have so far are:
    1). The sharp edge on the back of the laptop when its actually on your lap. Gonna have to file it down or pad it or something as I don't have a desk.

    2) The keyboard. Its going to take some getting used to but I don't like how the pgUp/pgDn buttons require the fn button. I also detest the CapsLock. I'm going to have to find some way to disable it (why is it needed anyways). The feel of the keyboard also requires typing a little harder than I would prefer.

    3) The battery.I haven't optimized things yet, but this morning it said it had 2hrs of charge at 80%. Pretty weak. My 5-yr old asus was 6 or 7 hours and it was not an oversized battery.

    4) Scaling. Not a problem of dell - but even at 1920x1080 some of my applications are very small.

    So impressed with Dell's tech support. Less than 3 hours from me confirming the issue and sending photos to them ordering a replacement to be built and arrange collection of the faulty one. Nice people too :thumbsup:

    Thanks for the impressions! I hated Win8 when I first tried it during Consumer Preview and then again when it first released, but that was mostly because Metro popped up every time I pressed the Start button and that whole interface was completely unintuitive without a touch interface, so I found myself sometimes "stuck" there when all I wanted was to close the active Metro app and get back to my Desktop. I also couldn't figure out how to close Metro apps that I'd previously just switched away from because they didn't show up in Task Manager -- and I say all of that as an IT pro, so I can imagine the frustration a typical person might have experienced. Combined with the fact that on the system I had at the time Win8 didn't deliver any real benefit, sticking to Win7 was a no-brainer. But I see with 8.1 they've added some small but important UI cues in Metro to make functionality more apparent, and there's now a first-logon tutorial for Metro showing you things like the Charms menu, the right-click menu that appears along the bottom, the tear-down mouse drag to close an app, and Metro Task Manager. That tutorial alone would have helped Win8 acceptance had it been there from the start. I also found Microsoft's "Getting around your PC" page for Win8 that helped immensely because it showed keyboard and mouse equivalents of various touch gestures.

    Don't judge battery life by the Windows estimate or while you're migrating a bunch of data. Actually clock it while you're using it in a typical fashion. I'm betting you'll get good results.

    Is there someone that could run a simple test with 3D Mark 11/13?
    This is just to compare GT750m on XPS15 and K1100 on M3800.

    Just to have another term of comparison, ASUS N550JV with 4700HQ and GT750m hits a score of 2678 points, but if I'm not wrong it uses DDR3 instead of GDDR5 on XPS15.

    Read the thread, that video has been posted before and most people have perfectly good wifi performance. TL;DR Something else is going on here, that wi-fi performance is not typical for the new XPS 15.

    I'm using the Intel driver instead of the Dell one and I have zero WiFi problems. I'm seeing speeds around 40Mbps on wireless-n. I tried that site and got crappy results too, but when I actually do stuff it has no problems whatsoever.

    I installed the (newer) drivers directly from Intel's website and rebooted the router. It's still dropping the connection... happened three times in five minutes. Any other suggestions? This is driving me nuts!

    I spent a lot of yesterday trying to work around win8.
    - I miss the close button, but Alt-F4 works just as fine.
    - I don't like chrome in fullscreen (as a proper app), but they have an option to make it a desktop window.
    - Win-Z shows the menu bar options for proper apps in win8

    Those actually solve most of my issues (aside from scaling).

    If the computer isn't even detecting the touchscreen, you could try opening the laptop and checking the cable's connection. It's a small connector that doesn't really latch or anything, and is held in place with a piece of tape. You could check that it's fully inserted (it's also possible that the wiring to the cable connector itself is bad). The touchscreen connector is in the back corner, opposite the wifi card, near the power connector.

    I'll have to investigate this when I get back from my trip this weekend. Maybe try the XPS at my work.

    You do software development and never use the caplock key? I use it pretty frequently in my job.

    HIGHLY doubt it's a loose connection since there are multiple people on this thread with the same issue. I also don't see the touch screen in my device manager nor am I able to find a driver on Dell's website (which is weird in itself).

    I know, in fact I wrote that the GT750m of Asus maybe uses DDR3 while the GT750 of XPS15 uses GDDR5, but until now no one has performs a 3D mark 11/13 just to compare with M3800 or Asus N550JV.

    Also until now we don't know if this machine has throttling on full load, I know that Bokeh has perform a stress test on M3800, but he does not reported how the GPU has worked in this condition.

    Nothing throttles in the M3800. Not the CPU, not the GPU. If you run a 90 watt adapter (which will give you all sorts of warnings) the GPU still will not throttle, but the CPU stays at 2.2Ghz instead of 2.7Ghz. Since the M3800 and XPS 15 come with a 130 watt power adapter, you can completely max out the CPU and GPU and still have power to charge the battery.

    I can't think of a single instance where I need capslock on. In development the only thing I fully capitalize are static final constants, but holding the shift works great. Capslock seems designed for writing sentences in caps - which I don't do. I can't even think where this would get used accept for yelling in forums.

    Oh right I understood it differently ;) I've been trying a somewhat demanding game (R.U.S.E) myself and yes at some point the GPU gets throttled I think, not that I have explicitly seen the frequencies change but at some point after about 30 or 40 minutes the framerate just drops significantly, if I switch to desktop for a few seconds the computer cools down and when I switch back to the game the framerate is back to normal...

    You should upgrade to the 16.5.3.6 drivers on the Intel site ASAP if you are having issues. Seems to be specific to certain routers. You might also make sure your router firmware is up to date.

    These posts are in contradiction, maybe it's because GT750 has higher clock than K1100m?
    If someone wants to check how is working his system while it is running a stress test o while it runs some games, HWinfo64 can generate a log file with all important parameters (it's a CVS file and you can easily post on forum).
    So you have to set HWinfo64 in log mode and to be sure that GT750m or K1100m will be rec, before to launch HWinfo64 you have to launch something that runs on GPU.
