This isn't really the correct forum for said question, that's probably why you aren't getting the answer you want.

I'll make it quick, with the best prices I found using a quick search.

    Motorola SURFboard SB6121 @ bhphotovideo.com = $69.57

    ASUS RT-AC68U @ newegg.com = $219.99

This should keep you happy for a few years, its what I use and have great success with.

    Good luck.

    1) Router: Read the reviews, look at sites like smallnetbuilder etc. Theres a new Asus AC router that seems pretty good?

    2) Modem: Your cable provider probably provides one for you, at least for us here in Aus, they're not like an ADSL modem where you can throw whatever you want. IE I used to have a Motorola SB5100, replaced with a SB5101i when that blew up, when the network was DOCSIS2, and now that it's eurodocsis3.0 (138mbps config file), i've got a Cisco EPC3925. All of which provided by my cable company. It may be different in the US though, I dunno. Only supplied and specified modems are allowed to logon to the network.

    3) No issue re constantly being plugged in. Power is drawn directly from the power port, and the battery is trickle charged from that (so AC -> Laptop Components -> Battery), it won't make a difference on battery life. You'll still see battery life degradation over time as part of normal use, though.

    Hope that helps :)

I would say that the M3800 and XPS look the same.

I think there may also be differences in how the displays are run. It looks like there are more automatic functions going on with the XPS15 to make the screen look good in games and when watching videos. The QHD+ on the M3800 seems to be focused more on staying completely accurate and keeping colors/contrast/brightness/gamma completely stable. Not sure if it is all done in software or not.

Hey everyone! Was wondering if anyone would be able to try running an Ubuntu LiveCD/USB on their brand new XPS 15 and perhaps give an account of how things run. Stuff like Optimus, external displays, QHD support, wifi, hardware NIC, etc...

If someone is interested in running through a few tests with the LiveCD/USB (no obligation to reformat), I'd be very grateful. Also a good opportunity if you're Ubuntu-curious as I'll offer my vast wealth of technical knowhow to help sort through any potentially solvable issues :)

I think to most people who are not photographers / graphic artists, the differences are minimal. However, you're right, that's worth mentioning for those people who care. I actually wish the XPS 15 had that capability, since I prefer accuracy over "pop" (and I do some photography on the side). But I think just letting people know that the two machines are substantially the same is pretty useful information. It seems unlikely that Dell would put a hugely different set of internals in one vs. the other if they're using grossly the same chassis.

I'll be doing a full install of Ubuntu when I receive mine (current ship date is Nov 22nd, but I expect it'll be here earlier than that). I'll write up my experiences in a blog post and link to it here. (I'm getting the mid spec and replacing the HDD with an SSD).

I can't speak to your other questions, but I have that router and put the intel 7260 card in my l521x and they work well together. In fact I put that card in my wife's studio xps 1645 and have verified (using jperf) that the two machines talk to each other at nearly max speed. wlan total bandwidth reliably runs 800 Mbps+ between two 802.11ac end points.

Whether that performance model survives fronting your cable-modem I can't say, my home internet is lame 3 Mbps DSL.

Just got mine yesterday and starting to play with it today. I have the highest config.

I use Fedora with Gnome 3 on my systems but I decided to boot the Ubuntu 13.10 liveUSB so I could give you a quick review. The system booted up off of the usb key without any problems straight into the gui as expected. I did not make any changes beyond defaults.

The screen is detected at full QHD resolution and the default resolution is usable. I am sure the scaling can be adjusted to your liking if things look too small (not that familiar with unity). Text is so clear on this screen it is hard for me to go back to my XPS 14 w/ 1600x900 now.

I did not install the nVidia driver to test optimus or have an HDMI monitor handy. The inbox graphics driver seems to work really well from what I can tell so far.

The touchpad works better in Linux than it did when I was using it in Windows 8.1. The gestures are smoother in linux and it seems to register clicks better. I am pretty sure now that the touchpad issues people are talking about in Windows are driver related after seeing how much better it works in Linux.

The touchscreen does not work out of the box, so I will need to work on that to figure out what is missing.

Wifi works out of the box. There is no ethernet nic onboard. Sound works too.

Here is a screenshot I took of the desktop at full resolution:
    http://i.imgur.com/nwkW9Zb.jpg

I hope that answers most of your questions. I think this will end up being a great linux system with just a few tweaks.

Also, Some people have mentioned that this system has 3x USB 3 ports and 1x USB 2 port. I ran across a usb key of mine that wouldn't boot in any of the USB 3 ports (even in another system) that worked perfectly fine in the USB 2 slot.

Keyboard seems pretty small with the ton of space on the palmrest. It's about an inch narrower than my 14" Lenovo's keyboard, and the F-keys are half-height. Personally, I would have gone with a slightly more expansive keyboard on a notebook this size. But whatever. You can still jam on this keyboard. Nothing wrong with it, just a different idea.

    Hi,

Can someone please compare the 1080p display on the older XPS 15 as compared to the new one? How much difference is in quality when watching HD videos? Is there a major difference?

Woohoo! I don't know if this will improve the battery life, but it got rid of all touchpad woes I had. Although you will lose access to some features (the ones which are gimmicky and don't really work well, such as gestures), you will gain many features that are actually useful. For anyone having troubles with touchpad, I highly recommend to do this. Thanks!

Now, the only problem left is battery life. I noticed that Dell recommended power profile is not aggressive at all -- I am hoping that more aggressive configuration will help....

Ordered 10/25, last time I checked my delivery date was 11/23.
Apparently it shipped yesterday and my delivery date is 11/13 now!

Better yet, the tracking says it's out for delivery to me now!
-ahah! the laptop was delivered before I could finish this post even! It really is a stunning laptop, in terms of feeling/quality!

Now I need to make sure the functionality is also a success..

Does anyone have recommendations in regards to scaling at this resolution? ie. I can make chrome scale to 200%, and that looks fine, but the address bar and tabs are still quite small.

I'm going to install Windows 7 to it now.

I'll also post some pictures to give more comparision perspective on the material/size

I just rechecked, and mine flipped to shipped! Woo hoo! Tracking says it'll be here Tuesday, too. My guess is that they batch the orders coming over the Pacific, so 2-3 days worth of orders all come over at the same time.

Keep in mind, Win7 scales somewhat worse than Windows 8, especially across multiple screens, and doesn't have nearly the same support for touch. If you need 7, that's fine, but if you're just doing it because you hate 8, it's probably not the best idea (in my opinion).

According to PDF brochure of XPS15, the screen seems to have 10-finger touch support, so what's the truth 5 or 10 fingers?
Maybe someone could try some free application to draw from market store and try to draw something with 10 fingers.

Rep I am chatting with right now (though you know how reps are) seems to be claiming that it isn't offered anymore.. which if that is the case then there advertisement is fraudulent, cause it lists the battery life for the big battery..

So take that with a grain of salt. I would assume a backordered part would just push the ship date, unless they had no idea the date on when they were receiving the part.

Might of made my Macbook Pro or Dell selection a little less tough though.

4:04:16 PM Marlon M Welcome, my name is Marlon. I can be reached at [email protected]. How may I help you?
4:04:56 PM rich hi, i ordered my xps 15 with 512ssd two weeks ago, and i see that it is no longer available on dell.com, why is that?
4:06:16 PM Marlon M sorry for that Rich, as here in dell all the computer are subject to change without prior notice,
4:06:31 PM Marlon M is I may ask, are you looking at the Win 7 version of this computer?
4:10:06 PM Marlon M just checking, are we still connected Rich?
4:10:16 PM rich yes im here
4:10:42 PM rich i am looking at the only 512SSD hard drive you offered...
    4:10:58 PM rich 4th gen, icore 7
4:11:09 PM rich its gone, no longer available, what happened
4:11:41 PM Marlon M ok, so that is the new XPS 15 that has 4th gen,
4:12:56 PM Marlon M thanks for waiting, I was able to check here as well, however the one with the 512 SSD hard drive is not available yet as it is out of stock,
4:15:21 PM Marlon M just checking Rich, are we still connected?
4:15:28 PM rich its out of stock?
4:15:44 PM rich there arent any problems with the machine?
4:15:50 PM Marlon M yes, that configuration is out of stock,
4:16:13 PM Marlon M nope, it is just probably the SSD configuration is not yet available,
4:16:16 PM rich because mine is on its way...its not normal that dell would come out with such a high end machine and then 30 days later be out of stock
4:16:27 PM rich not available yet?
4:16:42 PM rich i already ordered mine, of course its available, what do you mean??
4:17:16 PM Marlon M actually, since the computer is one of our top seller machine that is why it is out of stock as of the moment : )
4:17:41 PM rich "just probably the SSD configuration is not yet available"
4:17:59 PM rich can you explain what you meant there

Well lets be clear about this. The keyboard takes up less space than most, because it lacks a numpad or extra column of dedicated home/pg up/pg down/end keys, and the backspace/enter/etc. keys on the right are shortened by at most 1/4" compared to my other laptop keyboards. However, despite this, the key spacing is still standard size. You can't measure across the entire keyboard to compare it; you need to measure from the middle of the "Q" key to the middle of the "P" key, or something like that. If you do that, you'll find it's the same as every other "big" keyboard you've ever used.

Sorry, I'm not trying to argue anything here. I just don't want people to get confused and think the XPS 15 has one of those shrunken keyboards they used to put on little 10" netbooks.

Hmm... I've decided to hold out until I really hit a compatibility wall with it, as the drivers for 7 are not yet on Dell's website.

I did chat with a Dell rep who told me that "of course" the laptop would have Windows 7 drivers available, so we'll wait and see.

Well, since they don't have high end config anymore, that would pave a way for my high end rMBP.... I was hoping to save 500$.

I would be willing to bed that it is temporary. Probably a measure because they are so far out of stock.

I wouldnt trust a single thing those Dell reps say. Like I literally wouldn't. They'll be back in stock. They are still on Dell Canada and Dell Australia's website.

Its definitely 10 fingers, it says so within Windows System Information and I also tried it with the Multi Touch Test app in the windows store.

The top end model is still on the UK Dell site, although at the eye-watering price of £1,749 (US$2800) I'm sure they're happy to prioritise UK sales!

It's very strange for them to remove it from their website complete tho - like if it's just a shortage then you'd assume they'd pull an apple on it and create a back log of orders?

Was waiting for proper reviews to come in on it vs. the MacBook Pro - but now the high end model is disappearing I don't know if I should order (Ireland store still has stock)... #firstworldprobelems

I was kinda doing the same thing. Waiting for some user reviews, that Dell wasn't just blowing smoke about the Battery life. Also I wanted to see the pricing on the m3800, and see what the XPS 13 was going to do.

Looked this morning, shipping date was November 29th.. put one in cart to see what discounts I could get and what final price was... then took my kid to the dentist.. came back.. and POOF it was gone.

Had ran by BestBuy too, because I was still not convinced that I wanted a 15" vs a 13.3", so was comparing Retina models to verify.. finally just said.. for the price I will deal with a 15" screen (Really just want a 14" screen of at least 1080, if not 1200p, but apparently I am the only one), so went to order it this afternoon....

Now my wife is telling me "This always happens, you wait too long..."
