guys I am finding when I close the lid of my laptop the computer is not going to sleep etc it is still running and using battery. For example I wake up in the morning and the laptop is dead. What setting should I have it on for close of lid? Hibernate, Sleep etc?
-
-
-
IIRC, I believe the Dell power settings have it go into hibernate if it's been in sleep long enough, not sure though.
You should verify your power-management settings (click on the battery icon on your tray, then More Power Options), there are separate settings for what happens on button push and lid close.
There are also, under Advanced power settings, further options to enable automatic hibernation, so the machine can be setup for sleeping for a moderate period and then switch to hibernation automatically for maximal power savings.
BUT, if the machine isn't able to go into sleep, I'd almost bet that there is some application doing that. Games usually tell the system to not go into lower-power/sleep/hibernate mode; there may be other applciations doing that too. No easy way to tell, as a user.
Have you added any software (even web-installed software) since you received the machine? -
I am not used to this touchpad's drag-and-drop (without using bottons).
To my previous experience with Dell toutchpad, if I need to drag a window, I place the cursor on the window title, touch the pad (not clicking the button) briefly, lift the finger, then touch the pad again and drag the window without lifting the finger. It has been very convenient for me.
However for L521X, I can still can do this, but the interval between the two touches must be very short, thus the second touch can only move the cursor.
I don't find a setting in toupad configuration to adjust this.
Any idea about this? -
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before or not, and I really don't have time to read through 191 pages of this thread
. My XPS has the WIFI issue, like everyone else reporting the problem it works fine right next to the router and drops off sharply a few feet away. However, it seems to work better then usual (not as good as it could be but a lot better) if i put the computer on my lap and tilted forward at like a -30 degree incline towards the floor. So sitting down, the hinge of the computer is pointed at a 30 degree angle downwards toward the floor on my lap. I noticed it randomly a few days ago and have since tested it in several different places around my house, at work, and at a friends house with the same results most of the time. I have no idea if this is something that would work for other systems, or why it works, or if it even relates to what the problem actually is. It's just something I noticed and figured I'd let others know about it.

Hi everyone!
I'm been frequenting this forum for the last year or so, I purchased the XPS L502X last summer and had many of these exact same issues that are being reported on the L521X. It appears that they are working on fixes and that is great because this new version seems to be the one I wanted last year. All that said the L502X has S/PDIF out and it is a feature I use frequently for hooking the unit into my home theatre. Doers the L521X have a similar port? I would hate to have to get HD Audio only by way of HDMI as my receiver only accepts HDMI video, not audio.
I hope someone can shed light on this for me as I have read almost this entire topic and no mention was made on it. -

The Dell Battery Meter (probabaly from the newest Quickset) has two tabs saying Desktop Mode and Longevity Mode. However I do not understand how they work.
First, Desktop Mode, if enabled, says 'Battery will only charge between 50 and 100%'. What does this mean? The Battery will not charge below 50%? Or it will not charge fully, but randomly charge to a percent between 50 and 100%? What will be that percent?
Second, Longevity Mode, the whole tab is disabled, I can't select any option. -
Hi there!
I've finally received my XPS, it took about a month to arrive but 2 weeks ago I found this forum (specifically this post) and I was afraid to receive a defective laptop but guess what!!?? No, I'm not going to lie hahahaha I have wireless issues too =( but I noticed a few interesting things:
The speeds for 1m away from modem are:
XPS = 4.1Mbps downloading
Inspiron N5110 =3.1Mbps downloading
Acer 4420= 3.2Mbps downloading
*Uploading was the same for all
The speeds for about 5m away with 2 solid walls between them, are:
XPS= 0.9Mbps downloading
Inspiron N5110 = 3 Mbps downloading
Acer 4420= 3.1Mbps downloading
*Uploading was the same for all
The speeds on second floor (about 8-10m away) with 4 solid walls between are:
XPS= Like a magician; nothing here, nothing there, nothing anywhere! Do you have an internet service deal? hahaha
Inspiron N5110 = 1.7 Mbps downloading
Acer 4420= 1.5Mbps downloading
Theorically I must have 5mbps max download speed
Thats with the wireless issue, about CPU/GPU throttling and temps, I played Arma II for about 2 hours (maxim resolution and configured at high, not on maximun settings) I don't experienced any throttling and temperatures was 75°C for CPU and 71°C for GPU.
With my inspiron (nvidia 525m) I reach tempetures as highs as 102°C on CPU and 95°C on GPU (res=1366X768 and settings on medium)
Tomorrow I'll chat with Dell support to report this problem, but it's going o be just for the records cause I see they don't have the answer yet. I'm not going to acept to send me a new card/system.
Anyway, this laptop is so beautiful, I hope they can fix it soon, because I have internet in my house but what about university? I'll not be able to connect me there!!!
Greetings from México!!
PS1.- I have A04 BIOS and the lastest drivers from Dell.
PS2.- I've made a redesign for cooling system using SolidWorks and the simulations seems promising, I hope to build the parts needed using university's CNC machine. I'll stay tuned, guys! -
... so lets hope all goes well...
-
if it works out you may want to sell the design to Dell, or just make and sell some yourself. -
I've been considering L521x for a little while and there are currently two things that have kept me from pulling the trigger:
1. The wifi issue...
2. The lack of a second hard drive
Since the wifi issue has been well documented let's start with (2):
I'd like the second hard drive because I'd really like to run both Windows and Linux on the laptop but I would rather not mess with the caching + spinning raid that Windows is on. I would much rather leave the Windows set up alone and remove the optical drive for a second HDD that I can install Linux on and just switch between boot devices. It appears that newmodeus.com has a caddy available. Has anyone tried it? -
Depending on how much space you need, I think you could also install an mSata SSD and a 2.5" SSD. I am awaiting FedEx now to deliver my mSata, I installed the SSD last night. -
Sent from my HTC One X -
(You have to set the BIOS to indicate that your new mSATA SSD is AHCI (not an Intel-managed cache) and that it is on top of the boot order. You also need to put Windows 7, the L512X-specific drivers, and your applications on the mSATA SSD. The main drive will become your storage drive.) -
but hard to buy.
Sent from my HTC One X -
I guess I'll wait till the following year to get a replacement for the L502X. Wish I could swap out the NVIDIA 540M for the 640M though... -
It's ironic and too bad. Dell finally comes out with a competitor to all the other premium notebooks... and due to honestly the worst support I have ever had to deal with, I won't be with this amazing machine for much longer. My issue is I bought this laptop NEW thru craigslist, and was told there was no warranty (and later found out there was). So, I called up and tried to get the ownership of the laptop changed and even asked for help here. But Dell, cannot, or what I believe... WON'T help. I tried to explain to every representative I've spoke to; It's not about the fact that this unit is covered under warranty, or that I don't have ownership in Dell's eyes; IT IS the fact that this is a known issue with this system and whether or not this laptop was bought used or new, they know about this problem and should rectify every single defective unit NO MATTER WHAT, because it left their factories that way. I finally though that MBP Killer was here, but the disgusting attitude "Customer Service" has toward their consumers takes the 12/10 rating I would give this laptop and makes it a 3/10. Wish I could stay longer, this forum has had great activity so far and I'm sure any future problem will be solved or at least be given insight into just from the work everone is doing here. To anyone on the fence of whether or not to buy this laptop I give you these words. This laptop is the best there is right now (if you don't want to spend the 2K + for a MBP of some sort, and then I would still argue this is just as good if not better), and if there was no WiFi issue, or if you didn't have to deal with Dell Support then you would know your answer. But, there is. Take it as you will. Dell would have saved themself a long time customer and gained future reccomendations if all they did was send me the WiFi card I so desire to make this machine shine. That's all. Sorry for the rage. I'm out.

I installed a mushkin msata today. Originally, I was going to put the OS on it. However, when I tested the drives, the 2.5" was faster than the mSata.
I couldn't find the Samsung. -
I just got an XPS 15 this week-- I wish I had found this forum before I ordered... I seem to be having the same wifi issue that is affecting so many others. In the same room as the router I get ~40 Mbps downloads. 2 rooms away it drops down to less than 2 Mbps with frequent disconnections... A second laptop I tested gets ~27 Mbps in the same room. Such a shame, because the design is lovely and the specs are wonderful on paper.
I also had a problem with gaming-- tried running The Secret World. I don't think it was related to my internet connection because I was playing right next to the router. Basically, when I opened the game I got an error message saying the specs I was trying to play with were too low. From what I've found about the min. requirements for the game, this really shouldn't be the case. The game would still open, but the frame rate was so low it was unplayable.
I'm going to look into these issues more, but at this point I feel like I'll probably return the system. For $1700, I expect a premium laptop to work straight out of the box without having major issues-- and this wifi problem is a MAJOR issue. If I wanted to spend hours and hours fiddling with my comp just to get it functioning properly, I would've built my own.
ETA: Does anyone know if the wifi issue is a sufficient reason for Dell to waive the 15% restocking fee that comes with returns? Thanks.

The WiFi issue is widespread (not 5% as BillDell said, maybe just reported and recorded 5%, but I have not heard anyone who owns this PC and has a comparable data to confirm that it works fine). I may believe Bill if they take 100 units out of the warehouse and do a comprehensive test, and the result will be that only 5 units are bad, otherwise - it is ALL 100% of the units are bad.
In any case - claim that the WiFi is unacceptable and if asked - point them to the reviews on Dell.com (with Dell rep confirming the issue in comments) or on this forum.
Talking about the Dell Customer Support (at least for the Premium membership)
In my case - I returned it without any hassle, free shipping along with all separately purchased accessories and software - ALL returns were accepted. More than that - I got $128 Dell Gift Card on top of return - that equals to 5% of total purchase price of my XPS 15.
It's always like that - you tried to save a few $$$ by buying on Craigslist and by that you took all responsibility and voided all and any warranty by yourself. If you are not happy with your purchase - take it to the seller who you bought it from, but do not bash Dell for not standing behind their product and unwilling to recognize your ownership. -
@alfling - Yes Lorna contacted me and was very kind for trying to help me. Unfortunately, she does not make the rules and cannot break policy just for me.
@miklink - Though you are correct in the sense that they don't owe me ownership just because I own their device, warranty has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the issue here. If something comes from the factory defected, as we all know it did from this very forum, then it is Dell's responsibility to make ammends. So, if I was asking for a replacement hard drive because mine stopped working or I dropped the computer then they have all the right to blame it on me. BUT THIS IS THE FAULT OF DELL. I will bash Dell for not standing behind their product. -
I wanted to buy the computer so bad but I can't find ANYWHERE on the internet where someone said it's internet is perfect without them having it to get it fixed/replaced/etc
-
Earlier, someone here mentioned that a Dell rep told them to get a USB wifi adapter and that they would reimburse the cost... Has anyone else tried that?
I'd be willing to wait for the fix if they did that for me... (as long as a real fix actually does come)
-
Hey Guys,
well I have read this thread now and it is sad, Dell XPS 15 has this WiFi Issue. But I am looking for a new notebook right now and the XPS 15 is my favourite. What do you think? Is it a good way to order the XPS 15 and send it back, when Wifi does not work properly? Or should I choose another one?
Furthermore: There are two different models: n00x1514 and n00x1535. Do you know the differences? Is there one a newer version maybe with Wifi already fixed?
Laptop 640m
Do you know whether the XPS 15 is available at the moment at all in germany? Because when clicking on the 1535 the dell page says that this model is not available at the moment. So there seems to be a different between 1535 and 1514Is this difference Wifi-relevant?

Has anyone else had any audio problems. While playing Youtube videos or Itunes if I try to do anything else my audio glitches. To easily explain this, it makes my computer sound like a transformer. Earlier today I had it playing Itunes and and it made this noise, BSOD( I didn't get to it in time to get the code).
Just wondering if anyone has a fix for this before I call and deal with dell tech. -
As stated by miklink, if you cannot prove you validly own this computer, they have no legal obligation to repair it.
If you can still reach the owner however, it shouldn't be too hard to transfer the warranty through the Dell website:

I have discoved a solution to the wireless problem, at least for me.
I was getting disconnected every couple of minutes at home. My home wireless router is a,b,g. The wireless card in the xps L521 has "n" as well.
Single click your wireless conection, Click network and sharing center, Click your wireless network connection, click properties, click configure, advanced tab, 802.11n 2.4 channel width set to 20, 802.11n 5.4 channel width set to 20, 802.11n mode set to disable.
I have no more disconnects and my wireless is as fast as it should be with my service.
Hope this helps people as well as Dell to discover the root cause of the wireless "n" issue"
__________________________________________________
I was the one who posted this on the DELL website. I still had some disconnects with this, although less.
I have found the solution that has been working absolutely perfectly now for 36 hours with NO disconnects. (Update 48 Hours now NO Disconnects)
Get RID OF MCAFFEE INTERNET SECURITY. I unistalled via control panel, rebooted, ran the Mcaffee removal tool, rebooted, and installed Comcast Norton Internet Security (Comcast customer) and HAVE NOT BEEN DISCONNECTED SINCE. The Laptop is also faster when loading ANY PROGRAM.
MCAFFEE IS JUNK. Giving many people including DELL Headaches! -
Regarding McAfee, I also had to get rid of it because the Firewall blocked the connexion with my network printer... Not a single warning, pop-up message, NOTHING. I spent 2h looking for the cause of my problem before I understand it was McAfee.
McAfee also deleted some files without saying it...
So I installed Avast. Free, faster, as effective and not so intrusive. -
Finally after a long two weeks of researching. I ordered my Dell XPS 15". I was about to order the Samsung Series 7 Gamer when Dell just made me a offer that I couldn't refuse. Basically $100 off, + the $200 ecoupon coming my way. I am willing to work with Dell to resolve any WIFI issues if any on my laptop as I know I will have service to my door. I've had two of the new XPS 15 units and neither of them had the WiFi issue so I don't think every machine is affected. However I do have the mesh grid screen problem so unfortunately even the 2nd unit is going back and I'm done with Dell XPS for now.
-
Mesh screen problem? Any details?
-
I have 3 questiones:
1. The Dell Battery Meter. How do Desktop Mode and Longevity Mode work? For the latter it is just disabled.
2. The touchpd. If I want to click and drag, I need to be very quick between first tap and second tap otherwise I can't grab the window.
3. The laptop is in sleep mode (lid closed) but the DVD drive operates from time to time (maybe every hour? not sure). It just mkes noise as if it is loading a disc. -
I have purchased the L521x. As a lot of you, I fell in love with the design of this particular device. Unfortunately, there are just three main flaws/issues with this laptop.
1. The granularity of the display is what annoys me the most. Compared to any other display of another laptop, it really is a letdown. I am trying to play with the colour settings, in hope of rectifying it a bit.
2. The WiFi issue also hit me, although it does not have a high impact on me as my router is also in my living room where I mostly use the laptop. I have a nano usb WiFi device to go to customers.
3. The touchpad has let me down. Compared to my previous HP w8540w, it really sucks. It should not register taps on the parts where you can press the touchpad. You end up clicking on the wrong parts a lot.
Still do not know if I am going to return it or try to have the screen replaced...
I am also on the lookout for a bag to carry the laptop. I really like the Knomo Stirling:
Knomo Stirling Messenger Black
Unfortunately it says it only fits laptops with a length of 36 cm while the XPS 15 is 37 cm.
Does anybody has the bag and/or can confirm that the l521x would fit? -
I canceled my order. Getting the Samsung Series 7 gamer instead. Better screen, and machine for the price.
-
DELL must go down with the prices for L521x, otherwise this model will be fiasco. What a shame, such a great looking machine, the only one on the market that can compete with MBP when it comes to the design.
-
I want to take advantage of the 24 U2412M IPS screen deal for $99 on the Dell Australian site with XPS's over $1500 ending Aug 30. Although I'm hesitant as I would prefer the 'fix' cut in from the factory.
How late do you guys think I should leave it until I order (if I actually do and don't get a 14!)? Or do you think all orders will simply be delayed until manufacturing restarts with the new design.
Surely to keep manufacturing the current XPS15 design with the fault would be a bit silly when they are shipping out new units as replacements to people who have the issue. -
I reordered my XPS and decided to go that way. LOL! I know I keep going back and forth but I thought about it and rather have the customer service from Dell for warranty stuff, and good support anytime I need it unlike Samsung. Plus it's more portable which is the main reason I am ordering one.

On the UK site we only have 2 options available for the XPS5, an i5 with 1TD SATA HD and a 32GB m-SATA SSD or the i7 with just a 1TB SATA HD, no 32GD m-SATA. Both systems are exactly the same with only the core and lack of 32gb ssd on the i7 version.
Another quick question, which version would be a better version to buy? I have enough to cover the i7 version easily, I would probably use it for everyday web surfing, emails, writing up work etc and light gaming, just Guild Wars 2 when it comes out and maybe WoW if I ever went back to it. -
As I've stated before: I am currently selling a brand new xps 15 with i7qm, gt 640m, 750gb 7200rpm+32gb msata and blu-ray, if you are interested...
-
Please note, in the Netherlands they charge 29 euro return costs.
Kinda strange if you return a broken product you have to pay them. -
Hi All,
I am ordering the XPS 15 for school tomorrow, regardless of the WiFi issues. I have been following this thread for a while and I decided that I'd rather have a really good laptop all around, and wait for a permanent WiFi fix than buy an Inspiron. Besides the WiFi, sparse screen issues, and the throttling (now fixed with A06?), what do people think of it? -
As a general purpose PC it works great for me. Haven't spent any time gaming yet, but others have. Appreciate the build quite a bit. Fits well in the notebook slot of my Oakely backpack.
