Is there a way to install a fresh Windows 7 copy by using my product key and where do I get it from? I don't want to install the preloaded copy that comes with the laptop.. I want to try and install a new copy without all the widgets and test if the laptop would have fan issues without all the preloaded applications?

Also I was wondering if I install a fresh Windows 7 pro copy..would I lose the turboboost option? or its all integraded in the CPU so Windows 7 will use it and I don't have to install any special drivers..

The fan issues are exaggerated to say the least. Don't run the gadgets or anything that access the bios / fan and you will be fine. You can download legal versions of windows from this site, check the operating system section.

Have you updated both your intel gpu and nvidia gpu drivers? You should download the drivers direct from Nvidia, but for Intel from Dell.

I went to all this hassle too - updated drivers, then re-installed Windows from scratch. After all that (and with no gadgets etc), the fan would still come on for a few seconds when opening a simple web page in the browser.

    I RTMd it after that.

Not exaggerated for me - was seriously unusable, even after gadgets disabled etc

Happened to me with both firefox and ie

I know it's strange, some complain the 15z does it too, but it's fine for me, no fan noise at all. Maybe it depends on which processor etc you have. But man, it was waaay too annoying to keep.

I don't like that you mixed the graphic drivers, a dell version and an original version.

Nvidia's beyond 270 WHQL versions are a tad hotter than the Dell version on our models.

Try this, edit your Nvidia preference and have it globally default to use Integrated Card, make sure IE and FF (+ plugin_container) isn't overridden by the default use Nvidia Card in specific application section.

Also, enable Nvidia GPU Activity to see if the program is using the Nvidia Card.

Ordered a XPS 15. Planning to buy a SSD as the main drive and moving the original HDD into the bay. Just wondering if I can just download an iso image of Win 7 Home Premium and use the Win serial number at the bottom of the laptop? Will this work?

Yes you can, I installed an SSD and used WIN7 PRO iso image, after that I had to activate the copy and everything is fine, the only thing is you have to download all the drivers from scratch.
