    Folks,

    I am about to place an order for Dell XPS 15". i am currently using Toshiba satellite for two years, since a few months ago. i am experiencing overheating after i opened Google chrome with 6 tabs. HWmonitor showed processor temperature was 80 degree Celcius :(.

    my question about does Dell XPS 15" has overheat issue? Fyi, i am using laptop mainly for software development (Visual studio, mysql, SQL server) and browsing.

    Could you share about Dell XPS 15" handle overheating ?

    many Thanks

    80 degrees doesn't even seem that high...

    Anyways, some people have complained about overheating issues on the XPS 15. The Turbo Boost feature doesn't help. That can be turned off by tweaking the settings.

    However, my XPS 15 pumps out the waste heat very well. Much better than my old Toshiba. I reach temps of mid 70s, and shut off temp is somewhere in 100-105.

    Concat,

    Thanks for quick response. you meant when your XPS temperature hit 100-105, XPS laptop shut off by itself ?

    Mine has never reached that high. Highest is like 77.

    But yes, somewhere around 100-105 the laptop will power down. Does your Toshiba do this? 80 seems low for a shut off temp.

    Have you cleaned out the vents and heatsink/fan of the Toshiba? That is likely why your temps are so high. They need to be periodically cleaned, sometimes big clumps of stuff can get stuck in the fan area, greatly reducing it's effectiveness.

    The XPS series has pretty decent cooling, and as long as you don't let the vents get clogged up, keeps things cool enough to not worry about component damage.

    I've been gaming too with a couple CPU intensive games (RTS).

    mine runs cool in my opinion.
    one idle the cpu and gpu temps are around 45-50
    and while gaming my cpu can get up to 80 and my gpu 70.

    XPS 15 has a fairly well designed cooling system and pumps a lot of heat. You really feel it at the vents. Tons of hot air coming out is certainly better than heat inside your computer.

    i72630qm here
    CPU: ~40C idle
    ~45-50C light surfing/computing
    ~93C Prime95 stress test, 8 threads, 4 cores, 100% for like 5-10 minutes (However, TurboBoost can easily be turned off in the power profile so that CPU temperatures never pass 80C)

    540m GPU: ~40 idle
    ~65C max Playing Warcraft 3
    ~up to 96C playing Minecraft

    Now, please don't buy out of day cpu. star on sep/11 same price, buy high performance.
    I5-2410-->I5-2430
    I7-2630QM-->I7-2670QM
    I7-2620-->I7-2640

    Current dell on malaysia( www.dell.com.my), same price, but cpu all free update.

    Please don't stupid, when you buy 1-2weeks, you will see all IT market cpu already free to update.

    1. My XPS 15 has never shut down due to heat.
    2. No, I never tried (only had this for 2 months)
    3. The lid is aluminum, while all other parts are plastic. Yes, the palmrest is PLASTIC (don't let noobs tell you otherwise)
    4. Changing memory is super easy. Just screw a piece of the bottom plate. Changing the harddrive is much more difficult than most other laptops. You need to pop off the front assembly/palmrest to do it.

    That is a good point. You could easily gain a free 10% performance boost. The 2670QM, which you should be getting, is 200 MHz faster than 2630QM.

    Alinad, for the 1800th time, the new CPUs aren't available in most places yet. Waiting a couple weeks will likely cure this, but until then, just because one country has them doesn't mean everyone else does.

    I just believe, If dell has one location (such dell malaysia) already free update, other location will follow too. If not, user can complain dell and got free upgrade. who buy dell, please try.
    Dell is a world bussiness, much need fair for all user, such as apple brand.

    OP, sorry about this side track. I hope you have the answers you were looking for and enjoy your system.

    Some User use the old Xps to exchange Alienware. why dell not offer for cpu free update ? we has a 'reason', we need a fair.

    Dell won't swap the CPU after the fact. The only reason people are getting Alienware to replace an old XPS is that the old XPS's WERE Alienware equivalents, and the people getting swaps had like 6 major repairs done. Then it made more sense for Dell to replace under warranty with the EQUIVALENT than to keep sending replacement parts and techs to service. There is a MASSIVE difference between that and replacing a very modern CPU with one that is slightly better. Dell does not have to do this, there is nothing "fair" about what you suggest. Those that bought the system before these new CPUs knew what they were getting. It's just a waste of time and money for Dell and Intel to do as you propose, and makes zero sense. Just stop, you are way off-base.

    OP: 10% is a nice deal to be sure. There are often coupons floating around for a couple hundred bucks off, but adding the 3-year warranty (assuming it is the Dell in-home one and not some random 3rd-party one->might want to check on that if you haven't already) is nice.

    Unless there's a recall, I don't understand why you think Dell should replace the CPU. Monstrously expensive to do it for everyone who's bought from them recently. And what would they do with the old CPUs? Toss them in the trash? All for an extra 200 MHz?
