Hoping some veteran XPS owners could share their wisdom regarding Dell warranties. How long? Basic? Advanced. Computer will be on desk at home most of time but do have small children around. Thanks so much!

CompleteCare is nice, but their general tech support for the XPS line seems to be on par with the general techs for home systems.
Also, if on site techs can't fix your problem the first time around they'll ship it back to the main Dell facility, and you'll be without a computer for 2 weeks. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Given you have small children around, CompleteCare is not a bad idea. With the XPS track record though, you may want to get 3-4 year warranty.

I also have this dilemma also, I am owning inspiron 6000, which I extended from one-year to three-year complete care warranty. However, I didnt get a chance to use it and eventually it expired, I think my laptop is in the 5th year and still running strong. But, it does have some minor problems before, and fortunately I could resolve it myself (I asked probably my setting problem - the monitor black out after sometimes).
It seems to me that XPS 15&17 are a high-end machine and due to the temperature problem, it may end up in shorter life. IMO, it is still worth to extend to 3-yr (although it is quite expensive)... -
I couldn't tell you what's best, but I got the 1 year onsite warranty. My credit card doubles my warranty for free, so I've effectively got 2 year onsite warranty.

If you think you can work your way around computers and are usually careful, and you'd like to keep it around for a good while, 3-4 years basic warranty is great.
If there's a high risk of accidents, or if you just want piece of mind that coffee or a kid won't kill your >$1000 investment, Advanced Care for 1-2 years isn't bad.
Personally, I would normally get the basic warranty. However, with this next XPS 15 I'm using grant funding to pay for most of it, so I'm getting Advanced Care for 2 years plus the TechForward buyback, so I will be sure to have a quality laptop I can either sell back to Dell or on eBay (whichever is better) and I can buy a new laptop, which hopefully will be when the Haswell platform will be out (after Ivy Bridge). -
