    BRILLIANT!

Ill give it a go tonight and see what happens. If this will work long term I prefer this to having a 15" laptop.

A really useful solution for a lot of people having this problem.

Mine is fine but if it ever gets loose I'll know what to do, many thanks.

I would be careful as any sort of modification possibly can void your warranty. Also if a short happens, Dell can claim modifications to the DC jack could have been the source of the issue..

    @tsunade hime

as for me i think its too late for warranty ^_^

took appart the whole system several times to replace thermal paste, installed new hardware, and mod some hardware stuff, also bios modding, wich I doubt it is covered by the warranty :D thanks for the info anyway ^_^

note: nice nickname and anime pics :3

I had the same issue, but it was very irritating. The laptop would shut off while typing. We just received our refurb L702X. I thought at first, it was the Delta power adapter. I got a message saying the power adapter was not correct. I found this forum and fixed it. Mine would also not charge the battery. My conclusion is that all four ground tabs must be connected well to charge the battery. The battery charge indicator didn't even light up before. It is now working fine and charging the battery even with the aftermarket adapter.

Additionally, I went inside it and removed the plastic spacer in front of the DC jack. If you notice, this jack sets back farther than most older Dell jacks. This allows the plug to fit in further, which helps it stay more snug. I had to add support behind the jack though. This is definitely poor design on Dell's part. It is better than the old solder-in PC board jacks though.

How many of you managed to get them to change parts / fix the issue as they are trying to claim wear and tear on mine and wanting to charge for parts which I think is unacceptable.

^^Replacing parts yes, 'fixed' the issue, NO!
If your laptop is under a year old then it is under warranty -- no ifs, and, or buts! I have been replacing parts (not the dc jack) on mine constantly for over 5 months now and I am getting tired of it! As a matter of fact I am doing the Keyboard and USB/Headphone daughterboard myself today. If you have a problem with the jack, it is under warranty and they will replace it... BUT...you will get the same old part which will not solve anything.

They offered me the part for $66 with an engineer, so I took it to twitter to see if they'll be more helpful that way and honour the warranty I have. I agree with you although my other parts have been fine thus far.

My XPS17 has had this power plug issue since it was new. Bought in April of last year.

I am finally sick of it. Have not tried the 80sguy fix yet but may soon.

It is still under warranty. They want to me ship it back to the depot and claim they have resolved the problem and have a proper fix. I don't believe them and have not sent in.

@morfmedia can you update the status of your fix? Did they really send an engineer or did they send a technician?

    What was the fix?

Their "fix" is to replace the socket connector, but I've yet to hear of anyone's replacement being much better than original. Personally, I'd just tweak the contacts per this thread, probably going to do it myself. The right-angle connector is a little tighter, but still not great. It's a matter of poor tolerancing/quality control by Dell for the parts, I've had 2 l702x's (returned first one quickly since I got the wrong config). The first system's plug actually fit pretty solidly, the one I replaced it with, not so great.

It is best to replace the DC Jack - as the spread the dc jack back is a temporary fix.
I have replaced over 500 or more Dell DC Jacks.

Also the AC Adapter ends go bad as well.

hello, is this thread still active?
i have had ongoing problems with my XPS 17 L702X, mainly the DC jack. i remember about 6 months ago i tried this, i didnt have the exact tools for it, but still managed to pull all the pins out and it worked for a little bit and then wore off..
i bought my XPS about september 2011, only had 1 year of warranty, it had gathered up a few problems, right now the 2nd 500GB hard drive is completely corrupt, the battery WILL not charge no matter what i do. i have bought 2 other chargers for this laptop. 1 third party one and another legit one. and also got sent a 90w charger by mistake. the third party one worked okay, on and off. it would decide when it wanted to work and when it didnt want to work. most of the time it didnt work. but then one day it blew a fuse and i had a really hard time cracking the case open. so i gave up and gave the third party charger to my mate who then soldered the wire from my original adapter which had worn down and had been bent and eventually snapped the silver wire. so we soldered that back on and he did an amazing job, too. no fails whatsoever. covered up properly too. still will not charge. it just says the plugged in not charging, no matter what charger i use. at the moment i am using the 90w charger as it is the only one in good condition at this very moment.

i want to know, is it the chargers, the DC jack or the battery? a mate (who happens to be an IT Technician) told me its the battery, but i dont know whether to believe him or not. a new battery doesnt come too cheap. maybe $50-$70 on ebay or other sites.
a replacement DJ jack i found is about $40-$60 and i can't afford that right now.

anybody help me please? im at wits end with this laptop almost.

also, a ram stick i had was faulty. the computer was blue screening always. took one out, nope, took the other out, problem solved.
    these are my specs

    DELL XPS 17 L702X
    - 4096MB RAM
    - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.0GHz
    - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1
    - Intel(R) HD Graphics Family (HD graphics 3000)
    - Nvidia GTX550m 1GB GDDR5
    - 1600 x 900 (32 bit) (60Hz)
    - 17"

any help would be very much appreciated. i am thinking of re doing the DC input with the actual required tools this time. what do you think?

    Yes and No!
They will send a tech for repair, but nothing will change because the same part will be put in. A waste of time and the possibly that the repairman will most likely mess up your laptop (like scratches and marks) one way or the other -- guaranteed!

    Well darn!!!

I have recently discovered my L702X has a loose power connector ...so I knew I could come back here and get the info I needed for a repair.
I don't remember details of the post, but I can't imagine it was in violation of Dell Policies.

Oh well ..... if anyone can PM me the info or at least the part number(s) needed, I'd appreciate it.

I came across a video on doing it but did not watch it ...maybe that's my ticket before that is a "violation". :p

There is a fix selling on ebay. According to the reviews received/left it seemed to work well. I think it's call DC jack fix or xps17 dc jack fix.
