Hi,
I know from a few posts on this board that there are a few other World of Warcraft players floating around. Just wondering if anyone has been able to get DX11 working on their new XPS 15 or 17.
I've tried getting it to work on both our XPS 15 with GT420M and XPS 17 with GT445M with no luck. Adding the -d3d11 line to the WoW launcher causes an instant crash at launch, same thing with trying to add "SET gxApi "d3d11" to the config. file. Both systems crash before I can even log in, I get as far as the launcher "play" button but crash before the login screen.
Has anyone been able to get this to work succesfully? Other than being unable to add DX11 mode these 2 systems have been flawless for WoW.

Actually, just tried playing around with both again and for some reason it seems to be working now on the XPS17/GT445M but still no luck with the XPS15/GT420M.

I have the XPS 15 with GT420m and I have issues when I set the water to good or high settings. It barely shows at all. Strangely, when I set the water to the lowest setting, it shows well. Any others have this problem?
-
Yup, same water glitch for me also with the GT420M. Dissapears at anything over low settings. It seems to be a known bug. Have you tried running yours in DX11 mode yet? Just curious if you get the same crash at login.

How do I force it run in DX11?
-
To run in DX11 mode:
Righ-click your WoW launcher and select properties, then add -d3d11 as seen below to your Target:
"C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Launcher.exe" -d3d11
Then click apply and try and start the game like usual. If it crashes for you just go back and remove the -d3d11 and it will work fine again in DX9 mode.
You can also add "SET gxApi "d3d11" to you config. file in your WoW folder.
Either method will work (or not) the same. -
I'm getting the same issue with gt 435m, any idea how to fix this?
-
I'm gonna say it's due to our older drivers. I'm having the same issues on my 14. Betting it'll be fixed when Nvidia releases some new drivers.
-
Yep, it crashed as you guys predicted in dx11. Damn.
-
Weird, it works with the 445m but apparently not the 420m or 435m. Oh well, thanks for helping me confirm it's not just me.
If anyone does get it working please post here. -
Having same problem, have L501x with i5 with Nvidia 420m graphic. Game runs pretty good in directx9 mode but water disappears if set to ultra or high.
Immediate crash if I try to launch the game in directx11 mode. Using 259 drivers as the Nvidia 260 drivers will not install for me. -
Very odd, still running it in DX11 on my wife's XPS17 i7 w/445m with no problems...but my daughter XPS15 i5 w/420m is instant crash. Hopefully the next Dell drivers fix this problem.

In general play what framerates are you getting?
Have you got your settingsa on ultra or high? -
30-60 fps depending on where I am. Most settings on high, but water has to be on fair or it doesnt show up.
Tried installing 260 drivers using video2go method, got them to install but the laptop would not switch over to the nvidia after that. Game launched without crashing but was only 5-10 fps. -
On the XPS 17 (i7 w/445m) running DX11 mode my wife gets steady 60fps (vsync on) with the reccomended settings which if I remember is all high plus 4xAA. I'm sure she could go higher on her setttings but she's happy with her framerates not dropping below 60fps ever. She's not really the type to tinker.
On the XPS 15 (i5 w/420m) in DX9 and with same settings (except low water as above) it runs anywhere from 30-60fps depending on location. -
So here is what u do:
Install these: 266.35 Beta Laptop drivers
If for some reason they wont install, force your laptop to go into 3d mode (windowed 3d game.) and then install them.
Go into your WoW folder and in the //config. add the following line:
SET gxApi "d3d11"
WoW should now start in DX11 mode without crashing.
btw, make sure your DX11 is installed
Let me know if that works out, just had a look at shiney reflecting water on this laptop. -
The new drivers will allow me to start in DX11 mode and can display water, but I noticed both the framerates were quite a bit reduced and I cant alt-tab out of the game anymore. Pressing alt-tab or the windows key to go back to the desktop with these drivers causes the game to keep running in a very distracting and flickering manner in place of your desktop. It's a strange effect.
I am still using the new drivers, but just launching the game in the old DX manner. It works fine except the water quality.
