    Finally !

I thought there was going to be a touch-screen option instead of this 3D nonsense ?

Ah, now to bide my time for a 30% off offer, though it's killing me (I have an E1505). $1400+ is a little much for the quad-core + 1080p screen.

If I sweet talk the sales rep on the phone, I wonder if I can get a fat discount? I can be very charming, you know.

I just received my oldgen XPS 17, but it will be going back due to ordering this:

    2nd Gen i7 2720QM (2.2GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 3.3GHz)
    8GB Ram
    Backlit Keyboard
    17.3 FHD WLED TL (1920 x 1080) 3D
w/ 2.0MP HD webcam (I already own FastAccess Facial Recognition)
    Nvidia GeForce GT 555M 3GB w/Optimus
    640GB 7200rpm HDD
Tray Load Blue-ray Disc BD-Combo (Reads BD and writes to DVD/CD) w/Roxio Starter (I already own Roxio Creator 2011)
    JBL 2.1 Speakers w/Waves Maxx Audio 3 + Creative SoundBlaster X-FI MB 1.2
    Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 & Bluetooth 3.0
    9 Cell Battery
2 Yr Advanced Coverage (oops, I spilled my Captain Morgan and Coke on my notebook - what!? No problem? Sweet...)

So glad that I am able to return this laptop that I just got, but that I also follow these forums to know that the nextgen was out ;-) I will call to get my return labels sent out on Thursday (the last day that I have to do the return) and then wait until the last minute to ship this back. That will minimize down time while I await the March 18th (or earlier ;-) delivery. I'll just have to normal it back up (I did some hard drive moving around and partitioning. I will just restore from my recovery DVD's. Too excited...

There's no option. You have to choose one of the builds that already has it. Then you can customize the other stuff

bad news...if you want 1080p you are forced to get a gimmick in 3D and as a result, you don't get switchable graphics and get to take advantage of optimus when just doing normal stuff on the computer. this also means NO WiDi functionality.

Hey, just checked on the Dell website, and the picture on the gallery makes it keyboard "island-style." Is that right? For current owners of the XPS 15 or 17, any opinions on the keyboard quality of the Dell? I currently have a Dell Inspiron E1505 that is on its last legs and I hate the springy keyboard that Dell use to have, you get so much dust and stuff stuck underneath and some letters don't pop back up all the time anymore, so wanted to get some sense of the XPS keyboard before I blow a ton of money on another crap keyboard laptop.

The keyboard on the xps L501x is the same for the L502x. I currenty have the L501x and love the keyboard. It is completley flat, and the buttons are light and nimble, making fast typing easy. I also do some programming, and the layout of the buttons for that purpose is also very close to a standard keyboard, so when I switch from a desktop to my laptop and need to enter special characters, I don't have to look down. They are where they should be.

You don't have to select the build that already has it for the L502x, the display is the first option under the "Adjust Performance" tab, and it includes both 720p and 1080p.

Go under Home Computers and select laptops. Then check the filters for 17" display, 64 bit OS, and i7 Processors. You should be left with four, or so, laptops. The standard XPS 17, the XPS 17 3D (the one with the FHD display) and two Alienware laptops...

Trust me I already did that many times. I navigated to that and the resulting url is: The Dell Online Store: Build Your System .

On the HD Display tab I only see

17.3" HD+ (900p) LED Display with 2.0MP HD Webcam [Included in Price]
    17.3" HD+ (900p) LED Display with 2.0MP HD Webcam & Facial Recognition [Add $20.00 or $1.00/month1]
    Facial Recognition!

    Wheres the 1080p?

Looks like they changed it since yesterday. You have to start with one of the 3D choices to get the 1080p screen as a choice now.

Or maybe the non-3D one comes in the 900p screen only?

Edit: Yeah, apparently according to the "Help me choose" prompt, the 1080p is only available for the 3D version=/ Very poor marketing management on their part IMO.

have you guys read this thread? it is not only not available unless you get 3D, but if you get 3D it very well might mean no optimus which means WORSE battery life and NO intel WiDi compatibility. #$@$ dell if it is true.

Still not sure why the XPS 15 is not available with core i5 and the XPS 17 is. I feel like the starting price for the XPS 15 is way more because of that and a core i5 would be good enough for what I need the computer for...

Pretty sure he's talking about a second gen i5, and I totally agree, I don't want/need the highest class duocore processor. If it would drop the price by 100 to get a decent i5, I'd buy right now.

What to do? Am I better off with a 501 with the fhd screen or a 702 with the 1600 x 900 panel? I'm only using it for light work and browsing..
The 702 at the same spec but with a backlit keyboard is nearly the same price.

So what's the main difference between the 3D FHD panel and the non-3D panels? The reason I ask is because if all else being equal I like the size and weight of the XPS 15 and I've been reading how a lot of folks here have swapped their LCD panels on their XPS 15's...

So could it be possible that to make an XPS 15 be 3D capable by swapping out the panel? I mean they all come with the Nvidia cards that can do 3D to external monitor...

I'm hoping yes, as I have a recently purchased 501x that I am thinking of returning for the newer one, but I'm really hesitant to have to buy a 17 inch monster just to have 3D on the laptop itself....

Is Dell's "Estimated Delivery Date" usually pretty reliable? Mine is reading 3/18, and I recently found out that I'll be going abroad for about a month the following week, so I'm trying to get a feel for whether I can count on having the laptop by the projected date.

You really can't say for sure exactly when they will ship, but all the dell machines I've bought (desktops, laptops, servers) have arrived at or before the estimated delivery date. My current xps's expected delivery date was 2/17/2011, but it arrived on 2/8/2011.

Not to mention the whole Intel chipset fiasco. Mid-March is when most sellers are saying that they are going to resume shipments, but it may take longer, especially if they find a problem with the new chipsets.

I suggest you try getting to a shop where you can see 3D on a small screen. Complete waste of time. It's a shame you cannot get without 3D but still 1080 and I can understand now why some people are going to wait even longer to see what happens.

Dell doing Nvidea a big favour but unfortunately not their customers.

Exactly right. I really don't understand it though, this just really seems like a dumb move. I might actually go for the XPS 15 right now, but unfortunately I need more than 8GB of RAM. Otherwise, I could save almost 700 bucks over the laptop I have on order now, although I would obviously be sacrificing some stuff too.

Lol...not as overpriced as Apple. New MacBook Pro 15" going from 4GB to 8GB is a $250 upgrade. Newegg has 2x4GB SODIMMs for $109.

It's not getting the RAM that's the problem, it's the fact that the XPS 15 can only hold 8GB, according to the configuration screen.

Just ordered mine, in Norway. A simple spec one with the i7-2630QM, a single 640 gb 7200 rpm HDD (strangely they didnt have an option for a second HDD, but a tech guy confirmed that you can upgrade yourself if you order some other part..) and the ordinary 1600x900 screen, 4 GB ram.

Just a perfect laptop to replace my Asus G71V :)

I thought I would clear this up- the keyboard on the L501x/L701x is NOT the same as the keyboard on the L502x/L702x. Dell has switched to chiclet or "island style" keyboards similar to Appple/ASUS/Sony keyboards on the new SB XPS laptops. The keys come through the frame individually, and have a small gap between them. Of course whether this is a good thing or not is a matter of personal preference, I tend to make more mistakes on my ASUS chiclet keyboard...
