Hey, guys. I am looking for an external battery solution for this laptop. Now, I haven't even received my laptop yet (it is due to arrive on the 22nd), but I know I am going to need some serious battery life for my flight to Japan in a few months. So, since I only purchased the mid-level XPS 15, I thought an external charger would be the perfect solution. What I DIDN'T expect was that there are a series of (potentially insurmountable) roadblocks...

First, I have heard that Dell may have some kind of proprietary "third wire" that detects chargers that aren't first-party. Is that correct? If so, is there a way around it?

Secondly, I have heard that the XPS "sucks power at 6.67 Amps". Apparently that is bad. Does that instantly disqualify all available backup power sources?

So, does anyone use an external battery charger with their XPS 15? Has anyone had any successes? If so, could I get a recommendation? Or is this simply an nonviable solution?

I would appreciate any help with this issue; I am clearly in over my head.

Heck, my 9530 doesn't even recognize the 130W Dell charger that came with it all the time.

As far as I know there are no official Dell external battery chargers. There are a number of third party ones that purport to work with the (what I believe is) typically Dell battery connector, but I've never tried them.

The "third wire" is for communicating with the laptop's AC adapter, and I don't know what effect it has - if any - on external battery charging.

I know this post is old, but I wanted to let anyone who's interested know that I found a solution in one Amazon's product reviews. The gentlemen stated that he had purchased an adapter from Dell to fit his external battery. The review is here: http://www.amazon.ca/RAVPower-10400mAh-External-Portable-adapters/dp/B009V5X1CE/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t

I couldn't find the adapter on Dell's site so I went to Ebay and found it for $9.99. I currently use it with a Lenmar Powerport Laptop external battery (model: PPU916RS) and it works great! I hope this is useful to you and when you search on Ebay simply type in "XPS 9530 Adapter" and you will see the dongle come up first.

    Enjoy your extended battery life!

    Kind regards,

    DREi
