I just purchased a base model 9530 with no descrete GPU and an i5 CPU, I've already ordered a 91whr battery which I know I'll need to remove my full sized HDD for and also found a good price on the upgraded screen.

Just wanted to make sure that I can connect the upgraded screen to the base motherboard, I understand I won't be able to play games and stuff at the extreme resolution but the Intel HD 4600 does support the resolution based on it's specs.

Theoretically, yes. It's just an LVDS cable. In practice? I can't say.

With the money you're spending on parts, would you not have been better just buying the new one from scratch?!

No I'm actually still well under 1k I got the 30% outlet deal this morning and then tacked on a 18% discount

edit : if there was one available in the outlet I probably would have went with that

Just in case anybody is curious I received all my parts in today and everything installed perfectly. I now have a functioning XPS 15 9530 with an i5, 16Gb RAM, 91whr Battery, 256Gb mSATA, and qHD Screen for just under $1000. Still need to give the battery a full charge but should get a little bit better battery life than the top model as well.

Ok minor update if you want a 4k screen for web surfing or document editing the i5 works fine but if you want to play 4k videos at all I wouldn't recommend this setup as it maxes out the dual-core i5 and nearly maxes out the i7 750m combo.

Could you possibly tell me the part number for the 4k screen and where you got it? I'm thinking about changing from the QHD+ screen to the 4k (if it doesn't suffer the same overdrive issues). Thanks!

I got it from a local seller looked like a field replacement part. He was a little cheaper than the ones you see on ebay
